Occupational stress, Type A behavior, and physical well being.

In the context of a person-environment fit framework, organizational level and the Type A behavior pattern of managers were found to moderate the stressor, satisfaction, and physiology associations. For nurses, Type A behavior pattern was a much more significant moderator of the person-environment fit than were the nurses' specialty work activities.     

Changes in attitudes toward authority figures with the move to college: Three experiments.

Explored changes in attitudes toward authority of 2 samples of students (N = 508), who were tested before and after college entrance. Differences were reported between the sexes and between students who continued to reside at home and those who moved to the campus. The increase in negative attitudes toward authority observed in high school adolescents was found to continue into the college years, in contrast to predictions derived from psychoanalytic theory. Millimeter wave spectroscopic studies of collision-induced energy transfer processes in the13CH3F laser

Millimeter wave spectroscopic techniques have been used to study the collision induced energy transfer processes that are important for the understanding of the 1.2 mm¹³CH3F optically pumped FIR laser. In these experiments the microwave diagnostic probe is copropagated with the CO2laser pump beam through a gain cell. The continuous tunability and absolute frequency reference of the experimental technique have made possible a quantitative investigation of the emission/absorption profiles of approximately 25 rotational transitions. From these experimental results and a simple but accurate theoretical model, energy transfer parameters have been calculated by means of a nonlinear least squares fit. These parameters accurately account for all observations and are readily interpretable on the basis of our understanding of fundamental collisional and radiative processes.

Case report of a testicular lymphoma. A diagnosis of primary neoplasia of the testis was made since no involvement to the lymphoreticular system in any other organ was demonstrated. We review the clinical, diagnostic and therapeutical aspects and make a note on the rarity of our case, a type T tumour, due to the exceptional nature of this variety within primary lymphomas of the testis.     

GSR conditioning, anxiety, and extraversion.

"Hypotheses by Eysenck and Spence relating GSR conditioning to extraversion and anxiety, respectively, were examined… [Ss] scoring on the extremes of anxiety and extraversion were selected… . Using a conditioned response amplitude measure,… a significant positive relationship was found between anxiety and conditioning. No significant relationship was found between extraversion and conditioning… . The results give clear support to Spence's theory while failing to support that of Eysenck." Nondisjunction rates and abnormal embryonic development in a mouse cross between heterozygotes carrying a (7, 18) robertsonian translocation chromosome

Mice bearing Robertsonian translocation chromosomes frequently produce aneuploid gametes. They are therefore excellent tools for studying nondisjunction in mammals. Genotypic analysis of embryos from a mouse cross between two different strains of mice carrying a (7,18) Robertsonian chromosome enabled us to measure the rate of nondisjunction for chromosomes 7 and 18. Embryos (429) were harvested from 76 litters of mice and the parental origin of each chromosome 7 and 18 determined. Genotyping these embryos has allowed us to conclude the following: (1) there were 96 embryos in which at least one nondisjunction event had taken place; (2) the rate of maternal nondisjunction was greater than paternal nondisjunction for teh chromosomes sampled in these mice; (3) a bias against chromosome 7 and 18 nullisomic gametes was observed, reflected in a smaller than expected number of uniparental disomic embryos; (4) nondisjunction events did not seem to occur at random throughout the 76 mouse litters, but were clustered into fewer than would be expected cy chance; and (5) a deficiency of paternal chromosome 18 uniparental disomic embryos was observed along with a higher than normal rate of developmental retardation at 8.5 days post coitum, raising the possibility that this chromosome has at least one imprinted gene.     

Do temporal and geographical patterns of HBCD and PBDE flame retardants in U.S. fish reflect evolving industrial usage?

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) are common flame retardants in polymers and textiles. Recognition of the persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic properties of PBDEs has prompted reductions in their use. In contrast, HBCD has received less scrutiny. The U.S has historically been a dominant BFR consumer. However, the few publications on HBCD in wildlife here suggest modest levels compared to Asian and European studies. In contrast, the HBCD concentrations we detected in U.S. fish are among the highest reported in the world. The temporal trends observed suggest that HBCD use may have risen, and that of Penta-BDE declined, following the 2004 termination of its U.S. manufacture. For example, Hyco River carp collected in 1999-2002 exhibited a mean ∑HBCD (sum of α-, β- and γ-HBCD) concentration of only 13 ng/g (lipid weight basis), but was 4640 ng/g in fish collected in 2006-2007. In contrast, the mean ∑PBDE level in these same fish decreased from 40,700 ng/g in 1999-2002 to 9140 ng/g in 2006-2007. Concentrations of HBCD and PBDEs in several Hyco River fish species exceeded those from rivers less influenced by manufacturing outfalls. Results support the contention that textile-related production, relative to its BFR market share, may release disproportionately large amounts of HBCD to the environment.
