Using the psychometric paradigm of risk in conjunction with surveys of the Michigan public (n = 638) and a regional planning organization (n = 65), we examine the perceived risk and concerns associated with underwater oil pipelines, the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline in particular, and oil spills under ice. The fate of Line 5 is heavily debated in Michigan, specifically the portion that traverses the Straits of Mackinac, which can be ice-covered for months. Scant literature examines how individuals perceive the risk associated with Line 5, its alternatives, or potential spills in open water or under ice. Here we identify considerable concern regarding both the pipeline and the potential for spills under ice on behalf of the public, and increased concern about spills under ice on behalf of the planning organization. Organization members' concerns are significantly predicted by beliefs about the difficulty in remediating spills, however not by beliefs about spills' likelihood, difficulty in detection, noticeability, or consequences. Our results identify the need to better examine and communicate the risks associated with underwater pipelines and spills, both in open water and under ice, as well as options for remediating oil captured under ice. Furthermore, we recommend the adoption of decision-making and risk governance processes that explicitly expand analysis of the social, economic and environmental tradeoffs of underwater pipelines such as Line 5. 相似文献

Nanohydroxyapatite (nHAp) powders were produced via aqueous precipitation by adopting four different experimental conditions, assisted or non-assisted by ultrasound irradiation (UI). The nHAp powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence, Raman and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies, which showed typical surface chemical compositions of nHAp. Analysis found strong connections between UI and the crystallization process, crystal growth properties, as well as correlations between calcination and substitution reactions. 相似文献

The problem of extracting anatomical structures from medical images is both very important and difficult. In this paper we are motivated by a new paradigm in medical image segmentation, termed Citizen Science, which involves a volunteer effort from multiple, possibly non-expert, human participants. These contributors observe 2D images and generate their estimates of anatomical boundaries in the form of planar closed curves. The challenge, of course, is to combine these different estimates in a coherent fashion and to develop an overall estimate of the underlying structure. Treating these curves as random samples, we use statistical shape theory to generate joint inferences and analyze this data generated by the citizen scientists. The specific goals in this analysis are: (1) to find a robust estimate of the representative curve that provides an overall segmentation, (2) to quantify the level of agreement between segmentations, both globally (full contours) and locally (parts of contours), and (3) to automatically detect outliers and help reduce their influence in the estimation. We demonstrate these ideas using a number of artificial examples and real applications in medical imaging, and summarize their potential use in future scenarios. 相似文献

Gas sensor devices have traditionally comprised thin films of metal oxides, with tin oxide, zinc oxide and indium oxide being some of the most common materials employed. With the recent discovery of novel metal oxide nanostructures, sensors comprising nano-arrays or single nanostructures have shown improved performance over the thin films. The improved response of the nanostructures to different gases has been primarily attributed to the highly single crystalline surfaces as well as large surface area of the nanostructures. In this paper the properties of clean and defected quasi one-dimensional ZnO nanostructures, including hexagonal and triangular nanowires, nanotubes and facetted nanotubes are reviewed. The adsorption of atoms and molecules on the ZnO nanostructures are also reviewed and the findings are compared to studies examining similar reactions on nanostructured metal oxide surfaces for sensing purposes. While both experimental and theoretical approaches have been employed to examine gas sensor reactions, this review focuses on studies that employ electronic structure calculations, which primarily concentrate on using density functional theory. Computational studies have been useful in elucidating the reaction mechanism, binding strength, charge transfer as well as other electronic and structural properties of the nanomaterials and the gas-sensor interaction. Despite these studies there are still significant areas of research that need to be pursued that will assist in the link between theoretical and experimental findings, as well as advancing the current chemical and physical understanding of these novel materials. A summary and outlook for future directions of this exciting area of research is also provided. 相似文献

The primary goal of optogenetics is the light-controlled noninvasive and specific manipulation of various cellular processes. Herein, we present a hybrid strategy for targeted protein engineering combining computational techniques with electrophysiological and UV/visible spectroscopic experiments. We validated our concept for channelrhodopsin-2 and applied it to modify the less-well-studied vertebrate opsin melanopsin. Melanopsin is a promising optogenetic tool that functions as a selective molecular light switch for G protein-coupled receptor pathways. Thus, we constructed a model of the melanopsin Gq protein complex and predicted an absorption maximum shift of the Y211F variant. This variant displays a narrow blue-shifted action spectrum and twofold faster deactivation kinetics compared to wild-type melanopsin on G protein-coupled inward rectifying K+ (GIRK) channels in HEK293 cells. Furthermore, we verified the in vivo activity and optogenetic potential for the variant in mice. The purposes of this study were to (1) explore significant differences in perception of match for a variety of food and wine styles; (2) evaluate the impacts of wine sweetness level, wine acidity level, and wine tannin level on perception of match; and (3) investigate the impact of food and wine expertise on perceived level of match. The highest perceived wine matches for each food item were: Sauvignon Blanc and chêvre, Chardonnay and brie, Cabernet Sauvignon and spicy Italian salami, and Port and milk chocolate. Wine sweetness, acidity, and tannin levels all significantly impacted the level of match with certain food items. Food and wine expertise also significantly impacted the level of match, indicating differences between the more expert and novice participants in the role wine sweetness, acidity, and tannin had on level of match. 相似文献

Those who have been convicted of crimes are subjected to a stigma that affects many aspects of their social lives. The “felon” label brings collateral consequences that make it difficult to obtain basic human needs, including housing. This study uses the audit method to examine the effects of race, gender, and criminal history on housing outcomes. Testers, exhibiting characteristics suggestive of race and gender and disclosing one of three offenses, placed phone calls to rental property owners across the Midwest to inquire about renting a property. We found powerful negative effects for those with a criminal record seeking apartments, regardless of whether the offense was sexual or drug-related. However, we found no differences between minority and non-minority testers. We explain these findings in the context of housing as an essential resource for formerly incarcerated individuals. 相似文献

Increasing fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption is associated with reduced risk of major diseases. However, it is unclear if health benefits are related to increased micronutrient intake or to improvements in overall diet profile.This review aimed to assess if increasing FV consumption had an impact on diet profile. In the systematic review, 12 studies revealed increases in micronutrient intakes, whilst the meta-analysis confirmed macronutrient findings from the systematic review showing no significant difference between the intervention and control groups in energy (kcals) in seven studies (mean difference = 1 kcals [95% CI = ?115, 117]; p = 0.98), significant decreases in total fat (% energy) in five studies (Mean difference = ?4% [95% CI = ?5, ?3]; p = < 0.00001) and significant increases in fiber in six studies (Mean difference = 5.36 g [95% CI = 4, 7]; p = < 0.00001) and total carbohydrate (% energy) in four studies (Mean = 4% [95% CI= 2, 5]; p = < 0.00001).In conclusion, results indicate that increased FV consumption increases micronutrient, carbohydrate and fiber intakes and possibly reduces fat intake, with no overall effect on energy intake. Therefore health benefits may act through an improvement in overall diet profile alongside increased micronutrient intakes. 相似文献
