Activated carbon prepared from rubber seed coat (RSCC), an agricultural waste by-product, has been used for the adsorption of phenol from aqueous solution. In this work, adsorption of phenol on rubber seed coat activated carbon has been studied by using batch and column studies. The equilibrium adsorption level was determined to be a function of the solution pH, adsorbent dosage and contact time. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of rubber seed coat activated carbon for phenol removal was obtained by using linear Freundlich isotherm. The adsorption of phenol on rubber seed coat activated carbon follows first order reversible kinetics. The suitability of RSCC for treating phenol based resin manufacturing industry wastewater was also tested. A comparative study with a commercial activated carbon (CAC) showed that RSCC is 2.25 times more efficient compared to CAC based on column adsorption study for phenolic wastewater treatment.  相似文献

The present review aims to study the prospects and opportunities of introducing vegetable oils and their derivatives as fuel in diesel engines. In our country the ratio of diesel to gasoline fuel is 7:1, depicting a highly skewed situation. Thus, it is necessary to replace fossil diesel fuel by alternative fuels. Vegetable oils present a very promising scenario of functioning as alternative fuels to fossil diesel fuel. The properties of these oils can be compared favorably with the characteristics required for internal combustion engine fuels. Fuel-related properties are reviewed and compared with those of conventional diesel fuel. Peak pressure development, heat release rate analysis, and vibration analysis of the engine are discussed in relation with the use of bio-diesel and conventional diesel fuel. Optimization of alkali-catalyzed transesterification of Pungamia pinnata oil for the production of bio-diesel is discussed. Use of bio-diesel in a conventional diesel engine results in substantial reduction in unburned hydrocarbon (UBHC), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matters (PM) emission and oxide of nitrogen. The suitability of injection timing for diesel engine operation with vegetable oils and its blends, environmental considerations are discussed. Teardown analysis of bio-diesel B20-operated vehicle are also discussed.  相似文献

In the present work, the possibility of using R152a and hydrocarbon refrigerants (such as R290, R1270, R600a, and R600) as alternatives to R134a in domestic refrigerators has been assessed theoretically. The refrigerants are assessed over wider range condensing and evaporator temperatures. The assessment was done with standard parameters such as pressure ratio, volumetric cooling capacity (VCC), coefficient of performance (COP), compressor input power, compressor discharge temperature, and total equivalent warming impact (TEWI). The results obtained showed that pure hydrocarbon refrigerants are not suitable to be used as alternatives to R134a due to its mismatch in VCC. R152a has approximately the same VCC with about 9% higher COP and lower values of operating pressure and compressor input power. The discharge temperature of R152a was higher than that of R134a by about 14–26 K. TEWI of R152a was about 7% lower than that of R134a. The reported results proved that R152a is an energy-efficient and environment-friendly alternative to phase out R134a in domestic refrigerators.  相似文献

Heat transfer, friction factor and thermal enhancement factor characteristics of a double pipe heat exchanger fitted with square-cut twisted tapes (STT) and plain twisted tapes (PTT) are investigated experimentally using the water as working fluid. The tapes (STT and PTT) have three twist ratios ( , 4.4 and 6.0) and the Reynolds number ranges from 2000 to 12000. The experimental results reveal that heat transfer rate, friction factor and thermal enhancement factor in the tube equipped with STT are significantly higher than those fitted with PTT. The additional disturbance and secondary flow in the vicinity of the tube wall generated by STT are higher compared to that induced by the PTT is referred as the reason for better performance. Over the range considered, the Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal enhancement factor in a tube with STT are respectively, 1.03 to 1.14, 1.05 to 1.25 and 1.02 to 1.06 times of those in tube with PTT. An empirical correlation is also formulated to match with experimental data of Nusselt number and friction factor for STT and PTT.  相似文献

Polymeric membranes are extensively used for gas separations but their performance is limited by the upper bound trade‐off discovered by Robeson in 1991. Among the attractive modifications available to increase the performance of polymeric membranes, polymer blending is a unique technique because it offers a time‐ and cost‐effective method of tuning the properties of membranes. A variety of polymer blends has been explored in recent years. The application of polymer blends in gas separation membranes is described by critically analyzing the performance of polymer blend membranes. Polymer blend membranes of different polymer pairs are reviewed and evaluated in terms of phase behavior, permeability, and selectivity.  相似文献

Measurements and correlations are reported for the interfacial area and mass transfer coefficients as a function of energy dissipation in a liquid-gas ejector. The correlations for interfacial area and mass transfer coefficients have been developed using Kolmogorov’s theory and Levich’s hydrodynamic derivations. Sol-gel method was used to synthesize Zr(4+), La(3+) and Ce(3+) doped mesoporous TiO(2) materials with different weight percentage (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 wt%) using triblock copolymer as the structure directing template in ethanol/water medium. Characterization revealed the isomorphic substitution of Zr(4+) ion into the lattice of TiO(2), and surface binding nature of La(3+) and Ce(3+) ions on mesoporous TiO(2). Microscopic examination confirmed the surface adsorption of foreign ion which could alter the particle morphology. The size of the particles was less than 20 nm. Photocatalytic activity of metal ions doped mesoporous TiO(2) was evaluated using aqueous alachlor as a model pollutant. It was found that 1 wt% Ce(3+) doped mesoporous TiO(2) exhibited higher activity than pure and other metal ions doped mesoporous TiO(2). The change of oxidation state of Ce(3+) is suggested to be the cause for enhanced photocatalytic activity.  相似文献

The synthesized polyaniline-Zr(IV) selenoiodate and polyaniline-Zr(IV) selenomolybdate composite ion exchangers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV spectra, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, thermogravimetric analysis, and conductivity studies. The ion-exchange capacities, effect of eluent concentration, elution time, elution behavior, and pH on ion-exchange capacity were also studied to exploit the ion-exchange capability of the composites. The study revealed that polyaniline-Zr(IV) selenoiodate and polyaniline-Zr(IV) selenomolybdate ion exchangers are having excellent ion-exchange capacity values for K+ ion 1.36 and 1.44?meq?g?1, respectively. The organic polymeric part of the composites provides mechanical and chemical stability, whereas the inorganic part supports the ion-exchange behavior and thermal stability. The increase in electrical conductivity is due to the inorganic and organic parts. A mechanism for the formation of the polyaniline-Zr(IV) selenoiodate and polyaniline-Zr(IV) selenomolybdate composite ion exchangers is discussed, which may also be applied for the preparation of other composite ion exchangers. Sorption behavior of metal ions on the composites was studied in different solvent systems. On the basis of distribution coefficient values (Kd), it has been found that the cation-exchange materials are highly selective for Pb(II)-ions. Such modified composite materials can be applied as an electrochemically switchable ion exchanger for water treatment, especially water softening.  相似文献

In the present paper, an attempt has been made to review the performance of new refrigerant mixtures employed in vapour compression‐based refrigeration, air‐conditioning and heat pump units. The studies reported with refrigerant mixtures are categorized into six groups as follows: (i) hydrocarbon (HC), (ii) hydroflurocarbons (HFC), (iii) HFC/HC, (iv) hydrochloroflurocarbons (HCFC), (v) carbon dioxide (R744) and (vi) ammonia (R717). This paper explores the studies reported with new refrigerant mixtures in domestic refrigerators, commercial refrigeration systems, air conditioners, heat pumps, chillers and in automobile air conditioners. In addition, the technical difficulties faced with new refrigerant mixtures, further research needs in this field and future refrigerant options for new upcoming systems have been discussed in detail. This paper concludes that HC based refrigerant mixtures are identified as a long‐term alternative to phase out the existing halogenated refrigerants in the vapour compression‐based systems.
