The activities of some enzymes of glycerolipid synthesis and fatty acid oxidation were measured in subcellular fractions of the yolk sac membrane (YSM), an extra-embryonic tissue that mediates the transfer of lipid from the yolk to the circulation of the chick embryo. The activities of monoacylglycerol acyltransferase and carnitine palmitoyl transferase-1 in the YSM (respectively, 284.8±13.2 nmol/min/mg microsomal protein and 145.6±9.1 nmol/min/mg mitochondrial protein; mean ±SE; n=4) at day 12 of development appear to be the highest yet reported for any animal tissue. Also, the carnitine palmitoyl transferase-1 of the YSM was very insensitive to inhibition by malonyl CoA. The maximal activities of glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase and diacylglycerol acyltransferase in the YSM (respectively, 26.7±2.2 and 36.1±2.1 nmol/min/mg microsomal protein) were also high compared with the reported values for various animal tissues. The very high enzymic capacity for glycerolipid synthesis supports the hypothesis that the yolk-derived lipids are subjected to hydrolysis followed by reesterification during transit across the YSM. The monoacylglycerol pathway appears to be the main route for glycerolipid resynthesis in the YSM. The results also suggest that the YSM has the capacity to perform simultaneously β-oxidation at a high rate in order to provide energy for the lipid transfer process.  相似文献

Autonet is a self-configuring local area network composed of switches interconnected by 100 Mb/s, full-duplex, point-to-point links. The switches contain 12 ports that are internally connected by a full crossbar. Switches use cut-through to achieve a packet forwarding latency as low as 2 ms/switch. Any switch port can be cabled to any other switch port or to a host network controller. A processor in each switch monitors the network's physical configuration. A distributed algorithm running on the switch processor computes the routes packets are to follow and fills in the packet forwarding table in each switch. With Autonet, distinct paths through the set of network links can carry packets in parallel, allowing many pairs of hosts to communicate simultaneously at full link bandwidth. A 30-switch network with more than 100 hosts has been the service network for Digital's Systems Research Center since February 1990  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The clinical, mammographic and low grade cytologic features of mucinous carcinoma can make it difficult to diagnose by fine needle aspiration (FNA). Fine needle aspirates of mucinous carcinoma were reviewed with the mammographic findings to improve the diagnostic criteria and specificity for FNA. STUDY DESIGN: All aspirates were reviewed for cytologic criteria and cellularity, atypia and single epithelial cells (SEC). A nuclear grade was assigned to each aspirate. The mammographic findings were correlated with the FNA diagnoses. RESULTS: Forty-five patients with an aspirate and confirmed diagnosis of mucinous carcinoma were identified. The clinical impressions were: benign tissue (5), fibroadenoma (6) and cancer (32). The initial cytologic diagnoses were: adenocarcinoma (32), atypical/suspicious for cancer (11), insufficient (1) and negative (1). The cytologic findings showed smears with increased cellularity (35/45 cases) and minimal atypia. SEC with eccentrically located nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm were numerous. The assigned nuclear grade was as follows: grade 1, 16 cases; grade 2, 20 cases; and grade 3, 6 cases. Abundant mucin was present in Papanicolaou-stained slides in 23 cases; focal mucin was observed in 14 cases. The mammograms showed a smoothly outlined to lobulated mass with only slight irregularities identified. CONCLUSION: Mucinous carcinoma has a cytologic pattern that includes increased cellularity, with numerous single cells and abundant mucin. Although the mammographic findings may mimic a benign lesion, in the most patients a specific diagnosis of mucinous carcinoma can be made by FNA.  相似文献

Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis is a disease characterized by the growth of wart-like neoplasms anywhere along the aerodigestive tract. The etiologic agent is the human papillomavirus, of which 90 subtypes have been described. The age distribution of those affected appears to be a bimodal curve, with the first peak around 5 years of age and the second occurring in adults in the third decade of life. The mainstay of treatment is surgical resection to maintain an adequate airway; patients often require multiple surgeries. The epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, and treatment options are discussed. Current evidence regarding prognosis and the multifactorial nature of pathogenesis are also reviewed.  相似文献

Sequential circuits are hard to test because they contain a large number of internal states that are difficult to control and observe. Scan design is often used to simplify testing; however, scan is not always applicable because of area and performance penalties. Recent advances in sequential circuit testing have led to techniques and tools that provide test sets with high coverage of single stuck-line (SSL) faults for nonscan circuits. However, these test sets contain a large number of patterns and require a tester with considerable pattern depth. We investigate the application of Huffman codes to pattern encoding. This allows the use of low-cost testers that do not require excessive memory. Our method is especially applicable to nonscan and partial-scan embedded core circuits. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by applying it to SSL test sets for the ISCAS'89 benchmarks  相似文献

The authors argue that individuals regulate perceptions of their relationships in a self-protective way, finding virtue in their partners only when they feel confident that their partners also see virtues in them. In 4 experiments, the authors posed an acute threat to low and high self-esteem individuals' feelings of self-worth (e.g., guilt about a transgression, fears of being inconsiderate or intellectually inept). They then collected measures of confidence in the partner's positive regard and acceptance (i.e., reflected appraisals) and perceptions of the partner. The results revealed that low self-esteem individuals reacted to self-doubt with heightened doubts about their partners' regard, which then tarnished impressions of their partners. In contrast, high self-esteem individuals reacted to self-doubts by becoming more convinced of their partners' continued acceptance, using their relationships as a resource for self-affirmation. BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of sevoflurane and desflurane anesthesia on the pulmonary vasodilator response to the adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium channel agonist, lemakalim, compared with the response measured in the conscious state. In addition, the authors assessed the extent to which sympathetic alpha1-adrenoreceptor inhibition and cyclooxygenase pathway inhibition modulate the vasodilator response to lemakalim. METHODS: Twenty-four conditioned male mongrel dogs were chronically instrumented to measure the left pulmonary vascular pressure-flow relationship. After preconstriction with the thromboxane analogue, U46619, dose-response relationships to lemakalim were assessed on separate days in the conscious state and during sevoflurane (approximately 3.5% end-tidal) and desflurane (approximately 10.5% end-tidal) anesthesia (approximately 1.5 minimum alveolar concentration for each anesthetic agent). The effects of sympathetic alpha1-adrenoreceptor inhibition (prazosin) and cyclooxygenase inhibition (indomethacin) on the pulmonary vasodilator response to lemakalim also were assessed in the conscious and desflurane-anesthetized states. RESULTS: Neither sevoflurane nor desflurane had a net effect on the baseline left pulmonary vascular pressure-flow relationship compared with the conscious state. The magnitude of the pulmonary vasodilator response to lemakalim was preserved during sevoflurane anesthesia but was attenuated (P < 0.05) during desflurane anesthesia compared with the conscious state. The attenuated lemakalim-induced vasodilator response during desflurane anesthesia was partially reversed (P < 0.05) by pretreatment with prazosin but not indomethacin. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium channel-mediated pulmonary vasodilation is preserved during sevoflurane anesthesia but is attenuated during desflurane anesthesia. The attenuated response to adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium channel activation during desflurane anesthesia is partially mediated by reflex sympathetic alpha1-adrenoreceptor vasoconstriction.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To determine if ethnic and gender differences in smoking (lifetime prevalence and 30-day prevalence) exist among a cohort of Asian, black, Hispanic, and white inner-city adolescents during the 3-year middle school period. METHODS: Students in 22 urban schools completed self-report questionnaires and provided carbon monoxide breath samples at three annual assessments. Chi-square analyses were conducted to test for associations between ethnic group (Asian, black, Hispanic, and white) and smoking and to test for gender differences in smoking within each ethnic group. Additional analyses examined differences in smoking between two Hispanic subgroups (Puerto Rican and Dominican). RESULTS: Ethnicity was associated with lifetime smoking prevalence at all three assessment points but was only associated with 30-day smoking prevalence at the 2-year follow-up. However, there were no differences in smoking between Puerto Rican and Dominican youth. Black girls reported higher lifetime smoking prevalence than black boys at all three assessments. At the 2-year follow-up, Asian boys reported higher lifetime smoking prevalence than Asian girls; Hispanic girls reported higher 30-day prevalence than Hispanic boys. CONCLUSIONS: White and Hispanic adolescents were at higher risk for smoking relative to Asian and black adolescents. With the exception of white youth, gender differences were found within each ethnic group.  相似文献

This study used Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the performance of alternative models for the analysis of group-randomized trials having more than two time intervals for data collection. The major distinction among the models tested was the sampling variance of the intervention effect. In the mixed-model ANOVA, the sampling variance of the intervention effect is based on the variance among group x time-interval means. In the random coefficients model, the sampling variance of the intervention effect is based on the variance among the group-specific slopes. These models are equivalent when the design includes only two time intervals, but not when there are more than two time intervals. The results indicate that the mixed-model ANOVA yields unbiased estimates of sampling variation and nominal type I error rates when the group-specific time trends are homogenous. However, when the group-specific time trends are heterogeneous, the mixed-model ANOVA yields downwardly biased estimates of sampling variance and inflated type I error rates. In contrast, the random coefficients model yields unbiased estimates of sampling variance and the nominal type I error rate regardless of the pattern among the groups. We discuss implications for the analysis of group-randomized trials with more than two time intervals.  相似文献
