Calculation of the energy loss of fast multicharged ions in solids

The application of a classical approach to the energy loss calculation for fast multicharged ions in solids provides energy losses or kinetic energy electrons and for inner shell holes separately. The calculated total energy losses differ from the tabulated data by less than 20%.

The desire to work is deeply rooted in the human psyche and involves both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. If this is indeed the case, then this form of human activity should be considered to be an important element of our lives and therefore worthy of intervention when circumstances restrict an individual's engagement with it. To investigate the therapeutic nature of work for people with enduring mental health problems, the author conducted a pilot case study of a work rehabilitation scheme in the United Kingdom. The main theme to emerge from the study was that of purposeful activity.     

Facilitative responses to species-specific calls in cortical FM-FM neurons of the mustached bat

FM-FM neurons in the auditory cortex of the mustached bat are highly specialized for echolocation, responding facilitatively to the combination of frequency modulated (FM) components of biosonar pulse and its echo. Here we propose they are also specialized for processing bat communication calls. FM-FM neurons respond facilitatively to natural call syllable pairs, and exhibit inter-syllable interval tuning to the natural range of intervals. Our results support a role for 'combination-sensitive' neurons in communication, and suggest that cortical neurons can possess multiple distinct specialized modes of response.
