Organizing the production of heat-insulating inserts for ingot-mold hot tops

The Zlatoust Metallurgical Plant has developed a technology that employs semi-dry pressing to make two-layer (composite) heat-insulating inserts for ingot-mold hot tops. The working layer is made of a mixture of materials based on quartz sand, while the insulating layer is based on foamed vermiculate. The binders are sodium silicate solution and commercial lignosulfonate with a density of 1.12–1.20 g/cm³.

BACKGROUND: An erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) of at least 40 mm/h is considered an important requisite for the diagnosis of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). However, the relative frequency and clinical features of PMR in patients without a significantly increased ESR are unclear. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of patients diagnosed as having PMR at the rheumatology divisions of 3 teaching hospitals. The diagnosis of PMR was established, regardless of the ESR, in 201 consecutive patients fulfilling the following criteria: (1) age 50 years or older, (2) severe proximal pain for more than 1 month in at least 2 of 3 areas: neck, shoulder, and/or pelvic girdles, and (3) rapid resolution of the syndrome while taking low-dose prednisone. Patients with giant cell arteritis were previously excluded from the study. The frequency and clinical features of patients with PMR and an ESR lower than 40 mm/h were analyzed. A comparative study between these patients and those with high ESRs was performed. RESULTS: An ESR lower than 40 mm/h was found in 41 patients (20.4%). These patients were younger (P = .02), were more frequently men (P = .006), and experienced a lower frequency of fever (P = .003) and weight loss (P = .07). Furthermore, these patients were characterized by an absence of anemia (P = .002) and a lower frequency of abnormal protein electrophoresis results (P < .001). Otherwise, their clinical syndrome, response to therapy, and frequency of relapses were similar to those of patients with classic PMR. In the entire population of 201 patients, the ESR was related to the length of treatment, number of areas involved, presence of fever, weight loss, and laboratory test result abnormalities, but it was unrelated to the duration of the illness prior to diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: It is not uncommon to find a patient with PMR with an ESR lower than 40 mm/h. This syndrome is more frequent in men and it is clinically less severe than the classic form of PMR. Its recognition will allow these patients to benefit from an effective treatment with low-dose corticosteroids.     

Minors held by majors: the H13 minor histocompatibility locus defined as a peptide/MHC class I complex

The products of minor histocompatibility (H) loci are serious barriers to tissue transplantation even among major histocompatibility complex (MHC) identical individuals, frequently causing chronic graft rejection and graft versus host disease. Over 50 minor H loci map to mouse autosomal chromosomes but none are known at the molecular level. By expression cloning, we identified the H13 locus, a classical minor H locus first detected 30 years ago by the trait of graft rejection. The H13a allele is located on chromosome 2 and encodes a novel protein that yields the rare naturally processed nonapeptide SSVVGVWYL (SVL9) for presentation by the Db MHC class I molecule. The SVL9 peptide binds Db MHC despite the absence of the consensus binding motif, and a conservative methyl group substitution (Valine 4 <--> Isoleucine) explains why reciprocal T cell responses are elicited in H13a and H13b congenic strains.     

Determination of diffusing capacity by modeling the dynamics of C18O uptake in newborns

Dynamic modeling of lung C¹⁸O diffusion is used to measure the C¹⁸O transfer factor (TL_co) of 14 newborns aged 1-4 mo. The model equation is based on the alveolar fractions of C¹⁸O and on changing alveolar ventilation induced by the rebreathing conditions. The model does not involve the volume of the rebreathing bag which is usually needed when applying rebreathing technique add which is a source of error. The equation is discretized and solved for recorded data obtained with equipment adapted to use in newborns. A least-square parameter calculation technique is applied to estimate TL_co. Results show a strong relationship between this index and the biometrical ones and confirm those found in the literature featuring that the measurement duration can be considerably shortened     

On the RLSA antenna optimum design for DBS reception

An optimal design for the RLSA (radial line slot array) antenna useful for DBS reception is presented. Classical geometries and structures given in the literature are first used. It is found that in some cases these are not suitable. So, optimization techniques by using the right objective functions have been applied. Two different methods were developed and three antennas were designed. Numerical results and comparisons with other similar antennas give the advantages of our design

Thermal post buckling behavior of rectangular antisymmetric cross-ply composite plates

Summary The thermal post buckling behavior of simply-supported, antisymmetric cross-ply plates with immovable edges is investigated in this paper. For this purpose, a one term approximation for the inplane and transverse displacements is assumed and Rayleigh-Ritz method is used to obtain the equations of equilibrium. The question, whether the true thermal buckling (bifurcation buckling under thermal loads) exists for such plates is also addressed to. The conditions under which the thermal buckling in the classical sense occurs are derived. It is shown that nonlinear bending stiffness for such plates is direction dependent, because of an extra quadratic nonlinear term in addition to the usual cubic nonlinear term in the governing equilibrium equation. Results are presented for various plate configurations.
