Effect of the method of activation on properties of zeolite-containing hydrotreatment catalysts

Morphological and kinetics study of PEO/PVC blends

The kinetics of spherulite radial growth and the morphology of the compatible system PEO/PVC have been studied by optical microscopy. The usual spherulite radial growth behaviour has been found for compatible blends with PEO content higher than 70%. For lower composition, distortion of the usual spherulite morphology has been observed; the anomalies have been attributed to partial miscibility of the components.     

On the Theory of Electrical Phenomena in Combustion of Heterogeneous Systems with Condensed Products

The effect of the electromotive force arising in combustion of heterogeneous systems with condensed products is explained. A convective mechanism of arising regions with different charge densities due to charge transfer by the gas filtered in the pores is formulated on the basis of the developed physical concepts, estimates, and analysis of experimental data. Molecular neurogenetics of chemotaxis and thermotaxis in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans

Chemotaxis and thermotaxis in Caenorhabditis elegans are based on the chemical senses (smell and taste) and the thermal sense, respectively, which are important for the life of the animal. Laser ablation experiments have allowed identification of sensory neurons and some interneurons required for these senses. Many mutants that exhibit various abnormalities have been isolated and analyzed. These studies have predicted novel signaling pathways whose components include a putative odorant specific transmembrane receptor (ODR-10) and a cyclic nucleotide-gated channel (TAX-4/TAX-2) functioning in taste and thermosensation as well as in smell. The emerging picture of the mechanisms of sensory transduction in C. elegans seems to be basically similar to what is known of visual and olfactory sensory transduction in vertebrates. Thus, molecular and cellular analyses of chemotaxis and thermotaxis in C. elegans have proved useful and will continue to provide significant implications for the molecular basis of sensory systems in higher animals.     

Two distinct DNA ligase activities in mitotic extracts of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Four biochemically distinct DNA ligases have been identified in mammalian cells. One of these enzymes, DNA ligase I, is functionally homologous to the DNA ligase encoded by the Saccharomyces cerevisiae CDC9 gene. Cdc9 DNA ligase has been assumed to be the only species of DNA ligase in this organism. In the present study we have identified a second DNA ligase activity in mitotic extracts of S. cerevisiae with chromatographic properties different from Cdc9 DNA ligase, which is the major DNA joining activity. This minor DNA joining activity, which contributes 5-10% of the total cellular DNA joining activity, forms a 90 kDa enzyme-adenylate intermediate which, unlike the Cdc9 enzyme-adenylate intermediate, reacts with an oligo (pdT)/poly (rA) substrate. The levels of the minor DNA joining activity are not altered by mutation or by overexpression of the CDC9 gene. Furthermore, the 90 kDa polypeptide is not recognized by a Cdc9 antiserum. Since this minor species does not appear to be a modified form of Cdc9 DNA ligase, it has been designated as S. cerevisiae DNA ligase II. Based on the similarities in polynucleotide substrate specificity, this enzyme may be the functional homolog of mammalian DNA ligase III or IV.     

Neutron diffraction studies of the incommensurate modulation structure in SrxBa1-xNb2O6 mixed crystals of various compositions

Using time-of-flight technique between 100 K and 700 K a nearly constant IC modulation parameter is found. It depends only weakly on crystal composition. The intensity of the first-and second-order satellites decreases with temperature and at 700 K it is nearly disappeared. These facts are discussed with a view to the anti-phase domain model.     

Interaction of powder microparticles with the steel matrix under dynamic action

Conclusions In dynamic interaction of powder particles and the steel matrix at the points of their retarding and stoppage, significant high-velocity plastic deformation occurs according to shear, rotational, and twinning mechanisms, which, together with local microalloying of the matrix with elements of the particles, promotes additional hardening of the steel. Processes of complete restoration of the structure in these areas are undesirable since they reduce the effect of hardening of the steel with dispersed particles.Dnepropetrovsk Metallurgical Institute. Qualitativ-quantitative Simulation, ein Instrument zur Analyse nichtlinearer Regelkreise

Qualitative-quantitative simulation is one of the most productive and promising research areas in Artificial Intelligence to emerge in recent years. This method provides an elegant way for an exhaustive analysis of uncertain dynamic systems. The application of the qualitative-quantitative simulation is shown in this paper. The important question about the stability of a quanlitatively described dynamical system is solved by a novel analytic method.
