Relative Contributions of the Male and the Female to Sexual Behavior and Reproductive Success in the Japanese Quail (Coturnix japonica).

Two contrasting investigative techniques provided evidence consistent with the interpretation that female quail (Coturnix japonica) regulate male copulatory behavior by the duration of their immobility and through this behavioral mechanism they also control the rate of fertilization of their eggs. In Experiment 1, copulation tests with males and females from different genetic lines showed that the type of female that participated in a copulatory test significantly influenced the latency of the male's grab, mount, and cloacal contact responses and also determined the efficiency of the male's copulatory behavior. These measures of male performance were correlated with female immobility in Experiment 2, which used a more homogeneous population of quail. Furthermore, 2 of these measures (copulatory efficiency and the latency to make cloacal contact) were correlated with fertilization rate. Crystal plasticity modeling of deformation and creep in polycrystalline Ti-6242

This paper develops an experimentally validated computational model based on crystal plasticity for the analysis of two-phase α/β Ti-6242 polycrystalline alloys. A rate-dependent elastic-crystal plasticity model is incorporated in this model to accommodate anisotropy in material behavior and tension-compression asymmetry inherent to this alloy. A combination of microtesting, orientation imaging microscopy, computational simulations, and minimization process, involving genetic algorithms, is implemented in this study for careful characterization and calibration of the material parameters. Size effects are considered in this analysis through a simple scaling process. A homogenized equivalent model of the primary α with transformed β colonies is developed for incorporation in the Ti-6242 FE model. The polycrystalline Ti-6242 computational model incorporates accurate phase volume fractions, as well as statistically equivalent orientation distributions to those observed in the orientation imaging microscopy scans. The effects of orientation, misorientations, and microtexture distributions are investigated through simulations by this computational model. The model is used to simulate constant strain rate and creep tests in compression and tension, and the results are compared with experiments. The effects of microstructure and creep-induced load-shedding on the localization of microstructural stresses and strains are studied for potential crack initiation criteria.     

John Rickman, Wilfred Ruprecht Bion, and the origins of the therapeutic community.

The history of psychiatric therapeutic communities is complex and obscure. Nevertheless, one can make a reasonable case for saying that the first true therapeutic community was created at Northfield Military Hospital, Birmingham, England, in 1945. That community had its origins in the thought and practice of two British psychoanalysts, John Rickman and Wilfred Ruprecht Bion. Accordingly, in the present article their careers and the social and intellectual influences bearing on them are discussed. The article then continues by describing Rickman's work as a military psychiatrist, Bion's prototype of a therapeutic community, and the therapeutic community that was eventually created at Northfield.
