The perireticular nucleus is a recently described thin sheet of small cells among the fibres of the internal capsule, lying lateral to the thalamic reticular nucleus and medial to the globus pallidus (Clemence and Mitrofanis [1992]. J. Comp. Neurol. 322:167-180). During development, the perireticular nucleus is relatively large, lying in the path of the growing corticofugal and thalamocortical axons and filling the area of the internal capsule lateral to the thalamic reticular nucleus. After these axons have formed their connections, the perireticular nucleus rapidly decreases in size, leaving only a few cells in the adult (Mitrofanis [1992] J. Comp. Neurol. 320:161-181). In this study, we aimed to investigate the connections between the developing cortex and thalamus by making injections of tracer into the cortical plate. Injections of Horse Radish Peroxidase (HRP), Wheat Germ Agglutinin bound to HRP (WGA-HRP) and 1'dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3 tetramethycarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI) were made in vivo between embryonic day (E) 18 and adult and DiI was placed in the fixed brains of rats aged between E16 and postnatal day (P)1. Between E17 and P10, the retrograde perikaryal labelling resulting from these injections revealed a transient projection from the perireticular nucleus to the ipsilateral cortical plate. No cells were labelled in the thalamic reticular nucleus. This suggests that the perireticular nucleus must be regarded as a group of cells distinct from the thalamic reticular nucleus and having a separate role in development. Comparisons between the perireticular cells and the cells of the cortical subplate suggest that both may be playing comparable roles in early development, possibly guiding fibres towards their end stations or serving to rearrange the complex mapped projections linking the thalamus and cortex.  相似文献

A retrospective study to determine the effect of extranodal axillary disease on prognosis in invasive carcinoma of the breast was undertaken in a series of 152 cases. It was found that extranodal disease has an unfavorable effect on prognosis in those patients with three or less involved axillary nodes and no effect on prognosis in those patients with four or more involved axillary nodes. Extranodal axillary disease was found to have no influence on the interval between surgery and initial recurrence nor on the anatomic distribution of the recurrence, local or remote.  相似文献

A synergistic effect between cationic silver and UV radiation (silver-UV disinfection) has been observed that can appreciably enhance inactivation of viruses. The purpose of this work was to assess the feasibility of this technique for drinking water disinfection and evaluate the effects of selected impurities, found in fresh water, and common parameters on inactivation of the coliphage MS-2 with the silver-UV process. Turbidity (kaolin), calcium hardness, carbonate alkalinity, and pH did not significantly degrade inactivation. Inactivation was reduced in the presence of chloride, at concentrations greater than 30 mg/L, and in water samples with UV-254 absorbance values greater than ca. 0.1 cm−1. Inactivation of MS-2 with silver-UV disinfection was also reduced at high phosphate concentrations (above ca. 5 mM). Silver-UV inactivation of MS-2 increased with increases in temperature between 10 and 20 °C. Silver-UV inactivation of MS-2 was increased by greater than 1-log over UV alone, in two untreated fresh water sources, which indicates that silver-UV may be a viable treatment technology. An assessment of operation and management costs suggests that an increase in inactivation of MS-2 with silver-UV disinfection could be economically beneficial.  相似文献

The 2.15-A resolution cocrystal structure of EcoRV endonuclease mutant T93A complexed with DNA and Ca2+ ions reveals two divalent metals bound in one of the active sites. One of these metals is ligated through an inner-sphere water molecule to the phosphate group located 3' to the scissile phosphate. A second inner-sphere water on this metal is positioned approximately in-line for attack on the scissile phosphate. This structure corroborates the observation that the pro-SP phosphoryl oxygen on the adjacent 3' phosphate cannot be modified without severe loss of catalytic efficiency. The structural equivalence of key groups, conserved in the active sites of EcoRV, EcoRI, PvuII, and BamHI endonucleases, suggests that ligation of a catalytic divalent metal ion to this phosphate may occur in many type II restriction enzymes. Together with previous cocrystal structures, these data allow construction of a detailed model for the pretransition state configuration in EcoRV. This model features three divalent metal ions per active site and invokes assistance in the bond-making step by a conserved lysine, which stabilizes the attacking hydroxide ion nucleophile.  相似文献

An association between hyperhomocysteinemia and premature atherosclerosis in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) has recently been described. Little is known about the role of insulin in homocysteine [H(e)] metabolism. We measured plasma H(e) concentrations in the fasting state and during a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp in normal subjects and patients with NIDDM. Plasma H(e) decreased significantly from 7.2 +/- 2.6 to 6.0 +/- 2.7 mmol/L (P < .01) in normal subjects, but did not change in patients with NIDDM (6.0 +/- 2.7 to 5.9 +/- 2.5 mmol/L, respectively). These data suggest that plasma H(e) concentrations are regulated by acute hyperinsulinemia in normal subjects, but not in insulin-resistant NIDDM subjects. These abnormalities may have implications for the pathogenesis of premature vascular disease associated with NIDDM.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: The authors report the clinical and ocular histopathologic findings in three patients with longstanding unilateral post-traumatic blindness. After one or more decades, acute pain associated with conjunctival hyperemia and apparent keratoprecipitates or a hypopyon developed in the affected eye of each individual. Phacoanaphylaxis was diagnosed preoperatively in two patients. RESULTS: Calcified granular lens fragments were dispersed throughout all three eyes. The anterior chamber in all patients contained extracellular calcified lens particles, but only one eye contained conspicuous macrophages. Two eyes showed elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), and in one patient calcified particles extended into a glaucomatous optic nerve head. CONCLUSION: To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report describing a rare condition involving the intraocular dispersal of calcified lens particles after disruption of the lens capsule. The authors have designated this entity as calcific phacolysis.  相似文献

A 34 year-old woman, working with pine wood treated with sodium hydroxide and pyrogallol, developed dermatitis on arms, face and neck. Patch testing showed allergic reaction to colophony and pine wood, but not to sodium hydroxide or pyrogallol. Pine wood contains colophony.
