CONTEXT: Acidic foods such as orange juice have been thought to be unlikely vehicles of foodborne illness. OBJECTIVE: To investigate an outbreak of Salmonella enterica serotype Hartford (Salmonella Hartford) infections among persons visiting a theme park in Orlando, Fla, in 1995. DESIGN: Review of surveillance data, matched case-control study, laboratory investigation, and environmental studies. SETTING: General community. PARTICIPANTS: The surveillance case definition was Salmonella Hartford or Salmonella serogroup C1 infection in a resident of or a visitor to Orlando in May or June 1995. In the case-control study, case patients were limited to theme park hotel visitors and controls were matched to case patients by age group and hotel check-in date. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Risk factors for infection and source of implicated food. RESULTS: Sixty-two case patients from 21 states were identified. Both Salmonella Hartford and Salmonella enterica serotype Gaminara (Salmonella Gaminara) were isolated from stool samples of 1 ill person. Thirty-two case patients and 83 controls were enrolled in the case-control study. Ninety-seven percent of case patients had drunk orange juice in the theme park vs 54% of controls (matched odds ratio, undefined; 95% confidence interval, 5.2 to undefined). The orange juice was unpasteurized and locally produced. Salmonella Gaminara was isolated from 10 of 12 containers of orange juice produced during May and July, indicating ongoing contamination of juice probably because of inadequately sanitized processing equipment. CONCLUSIONS: Unpasteurized orange juice caused an outbreak of salmonellosis in a large Florida theme park. All orange juice was recalled and the processing plant closed. Pasteurization or other equally effective risk-management strategies should be used in the production of all juices. 相似文献

Vinylidenebisphosphonic acid tetraethyl ester (1) and diazo ketones 7a-1 in ether at 22 degrees C yield pyrazoline bisphosphonate tetraethyl esters 8a-1 in moderate to good yield. These compounds were evaluated in animal models of arthritis: rat adjuvant-induced polyarthritis (AIP) and murine antigen-induced arthritis (AIA) and a murine model of chronic inflammation, the delayed type hypersensitivity granuloma reaction (DTH-GRA). (5-Benzoyl-2,4-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-ylidene)-bisphosphonic acid tetraethyl ester (8a), and [5-(3-fluorobenzoyl)-2,4-dihydro-3H-pyraxol-3-ylidene]- bisphosphonic acid tetraethyl ester (8d) significantly inhibited the arthritis models, AIP (15 mg/kg) and AIA (25 mg/kg), as well as the DTH-GRA (25 mg/kg). Conversion of 8a to the corresponding bisphosphonic acid, 10a, resulted in loss of activity. Compounds with alkyl substituents on the pyrazoline nitrogen, 9a-d, were inactive in the DTH-GRA. These results show that 8a and 8d have novel antiinflammatory activity and are capable of inhibiting chronic arthritis and inflammation in animals. Such compounds might be useful in man for treating chronic tissue injury associated with arthropathies such as inflammatory joint disease as well as other chronic inflammatory diseases. 相似文献

A detailed study of the kinetics of iron(II) oxidation by molecular oxygen in natural and recombinant human apoferritins has been carried out using electrode oximetry to better understand the ferroxidase activity of the protein shell. A comparative study of recombinant L-chain ferritin (rLF), recombinant H-chain ferritin (rHF), and variants has shown that (1) rLF lacks a ferroxidase activity, confirming the results of previous studies; (2) the ferroxidase site of rHF involves Glu-62 and His-65, presumably as Fe2+ ligands, since mutation of these residues abolishes most of the oxidase activity, in agreement with previous studies; and (3) mutation of both the putative ferroxidase and nucleation site ligands in rHF renders the protein totally incapable of catalyzing the oxidation of Fe2+ whereas mutation of nucleation site ligands alone (Glu-61, Glu-64, and Glu-67) decreases the activity only slightly. Analysis of the kinetics of rHF and natural human liver ferritin (HLF) (4% H-chain, 96% L-chain) gave the following apparent parameters at pH 7: Km,O2 = 6 +/- 2 microM, Km,Fe = 80 +/- 10 microM, and kcat = 201 +/- 14 min-1 for rHF and Km,O2 = 60 +/- 12 microM, Km,Fe = 50 +/- 10 microM, and kcat = 31.2 +/- 0.6 min-1 for HLF. Furthermore, Zn2+ was shown to be a noncompetitive inhibitor of Fe2+ oxidation in rHF but a mixed inhibitor in HLF. These different forms of Zn2+ inhibition in the two proteins and the higher activity of HLF than expected, based on its H-chain composition as well as differences in their enzyme kinetic parameters, suggest that H- and L-chains cooperate in modulating the ferroxidase activity of the apoferritin even though the L-subunit lacks a ferroxidase site itself. 相似文献

Neurologic evaluation should be performed in horses with diseases of the head. Although neurologic examination should focus on assessing behavior, mental status, and cranial nerve evaluation, evaluation of neurologic function of other body regions should be performed. Neurologic evaluation of the head can be performed expediently by practitioners to provide useful diagnostic and prognostic information. The numerous causes of dysphagia can be classified as obstructive, painful, or neurogenic. Common causes of neurogenic dysphagia are summarized, and methods for initial diagnosis and management are described. The effects of packaged content, packaging material, transponder inlay design, reader antenna polarization, interrogation power and transponder orientation on the detection rate of ultra‐high frequency radio frequency identification (UHF RFID) passive transponders were studied. The influence of individual factors and their interactions were determined using general linear model analysis of variance. Influences originated in order of importance, from sample type, antenna polarization, power and inlay design. Important interactions in decreasing order of significance exist between: power and antenna polarization; sample type and antenna polarization; sample type and inlay design; inlay design and antenna polarization; sample type, power and antenna polarization; sample type and power; inlay design and power; sample type, inlay design and power. It was also observed that random orientation of tags did not cause a statistically significant variation in tag detection rate.
