Ultrastructural changes in the central nervous system of mice in tick-borne encephalitis

Tick-borne encephalitis virus is localized in nerve cells and intracellular spaces. According to the nature of ultrastructural changes, the pathological process in nerve cells may be divided into three stages connected with the stages of virus reproduction. In the first stage, the protein-synthesizing systems of the cell are degraded. In the second stage specific virus inclusions form in the cell cytoplasm as aggregates of mature and immature virions alongside with destruction of ultrastructures and growth of smooth membranes. In the third stage degradation of neurons is accompanied by necrobiosis and discomplexation of the surrounding glial elements, processes, cells of the inflammatory infiltrate and capillary walls. A certain combination of nonspecific changes in organelles of various cells with viral inclusions makes the ultrastructural picture of the focus of lesions in tick-borne encephalitis sufficiently characteristic for differential pathological diagnosis.     

Stroma of epithelial bladder tumors

The stroma of 509 epithelial tumors of the urinary bladder was examined. There was found a definite correlation between the stroma status, its histochemical properties and the histological structure of bladder tumor. During growth and malignant transformation the stroma and its histochemical pattern is significantly changed. The process of fibrosis develops with the accumulation of NMPS and decrease of AMPS as well as the reduction of argyrophil fibres characteristic of papilloma and differentiated transitional cell cancer. A predominance of argyrophil fibres with the accumulation of AMPS is typical for undifferentiated cancer which early infiltrates the organ wall and metastasize rapidly and extensively.     

Use of a histological fixative for extraction of the RNA precursor pool from mollusk nerve tissue

The incorporation of 3H-uridine into the nucleotide pool of the molluscan nerve tissue was calculated in a routine fixative solution (formalin--alcohol--acetic acid, 9:3:1). The optimal conditions for the precursor output from the tissue being studied, the results obtained well compare with those obtained by common biochemical techniques. Our method gives a possibility to use the same sample of tissue for historadiographical investigation of labeled RNA and for cytochemical determination of nuclear acid amounts.     

Use of Edman's method for splitting actinoidin peptides and aglycone

Phenylthiohydantoins of amino acids isolated from actinoidine (n-oxyphenylglycine, 3-chlor-4-oxyphenylglycine, actinoidinic amino acid) were prepared. Their spectral and chromagraphic properties were studied. Splitting of the aglycone of actinoidine and the prodlcts of its incomplete acid hydrolysis (peptides Y-Phe and B-Y-Phe) was achieved with the Edman method. Parital structure of tripeptide B-Y-Phe (4NH2-group) was proposed. Tripeptide B-Y Phe constitutes about 80 per cent of the antibiotic aglycone part.
