The paper describes a technique to generate high‐quality light field representations from volumetric data. We show how light field galleries can be created to give unexperienced audiences access to interactive high‐quality volume renditions. The proposed light field representation is lightweight with respect to storage and bandwidth capacity and is thus ideal as exchange format for visualization results, especially for web galleries. The approach expands an existing sphere‐hemisphere parameterization for the light field with per‐pixel depth. High‐quality paraboloid maps from volumetric data are generated using GPU‐based ray‐casting or slicing approaches. Different layers, such as isosurfaces, but not restricted to, can be generated independently and composited in real time. Today’s time-of-flight (TOF) sensors measure full-range distance information by estimating the elapsed time between emission and receiving of active light in real-time. Such sensors are inexpensive, compact, and they have a high performance, which especially fits real-time applications, e.g. in the fields of automotive, robotics, 3D imaging, and visualization. The simulation of such sensors is an essential building block for hardware design and application development. Therefore, the simulation data must capture the major sensor characteristics.This paper introduces a simulation approach, which is motivated by physics, for the Photonic Mixing Device (PMD) sensor which is a specific type of time-of-flight sensor. Dynamic motion blurring and resolution artifacts such as flying pixels as well as the typical deviation error are prominent effects of real world systems. Flying pixels arise when an area of inhomogeneous depth is covered by a single PMD-pixel whereas the deviation error is based on the anharmonic properties of the optical signal. The modeling of these artifacts is essential for an authentic simulation approach. We present a detailed comparison between a real PMD-device and the simulation data regarding the sensor characteristics.The proposed algorithms are implemented in a hardware accelerated solution which makes use of the programmability of modern Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). This way, an interactive simulation feedback is provided for applications and further data processing. A historic overview including the European, American, Asian, and African continents is given on attitudes toward and the handling of humans with congenital malformations in ancient cultures and on pertinent customs in some prehistoric peoples. Figures of early works of art showing malformed individuals are presented testifying to this worldwide and timeless problem of humankind. In parallel, analogous patient photographs from our hospital before and after reconstructive surgery are shown. Philosophies of ancient Greece, rome, and China on the subject of malformed infants essentially did not differ from the known attitudes of the less developed tribes in Europe and pre-Columbian America, although the means of elimination of unwanted offspring were rather passive (exposure) than active (manual killing). A radical change in attitudes and practices occurred with the spread of the Christian religion and its political installment in Europe. The care for the underprivileged including the malformed ones was considered a Christian duty to be performed with compassion and love. In our century, the clocks have been and apparently are turned back again. Atheistic and Darwinian influences, political atheism, and the belief in "higher ethics" issued by "superman" have led to a relapse into barbarism, also within the medical system. We, as craniofacial surgeons, are privileged to have the means to turn the clocks forward again by rehabilitating the physically most underprivileged: those with conspicuous craniofacial malformations. The necessary techniques exist and are applied, as the figures of patients from our hospital demonstrate, but the will and the emotional strength for their consequent application require more than our hands. 相似文献

Protein structures are a very special class among all possible structures. It has been suggested that a "designability principle" plays a crucial role in nature's selection of protein sequences and structures. Here, we provide a theoretical base for such a selection principle, using a simple model of protein folding based on hydrophobic interactions. A structure is reduced to a string of 0s and 1s, which represent the surface and core sites, respectively, as the backbone is traced. Each structure is therefore associated with one point in a high dimensional space. Sequences are represented by strings of their hydrophobicities and thus can be mapped into the same space. A sequence that lies closer to a particular structure in this space than to any other structures will have that structure as its ground state. Atypical structures, namely those far away from other structures in the high dimensional space, have more sequences that fold into them and are thermodynamically more stable. We argue that the most common folds of proteins are the most atypical in the space of possible structures. 相似文献

Experiments on white rats proved that the silicotic pulmonary changes slowed with the tails periodically immersed into iodine solution. Those pulmonary changes were due to inhalation of quartzite dust and especially due to intratracheal administration of standardized quartz dust DQ12. Influenced by inhalation of dust containing quartz, the rats demonstrated characteristic alterations in cytologic features of bronchial and alveolar lavage water. The "iodine baths" also declined those alterations, that may prove higher resistance of pulmonary macrophages to cytotoxic effects of quartz. This hypothesis finds a support in experiments with culture of rat peritoneal macrophages. If incubated in a medium with low iodine concentrations and subsequently washed off, the macrophages demonstrate lower incidence of cytotoxic effects due to the next incubation with particles of DQ12. The macrophage's higher resistance against cytotoxic agents is believed to result directly in antisilicotic effect of iodine, so "iodine baths" could be recommended for pathogenetic therapy and medical prophylaxis of silicosis. 相似文献

We have generated transgenic mice over-expressing human apolipoprotein CI (apo CI) using the native gene joined to the downstream 154-bp liver-specific enhancer that we defined for apo E. Human apo CI (HuCI)-transgenic mice showed elevation of plasma triglycerides (mg/dl) compared to controls in both the fasted (211 +/- 81 vs 123 +/- 52, P = 0.0001) and fed (265 +/- 105 vs 146 +/- 68, P < 0.0001) states. Unlike the human apo CII (HuCII)- and apo CIII (HuCIII)-transgenic mouse models of hypertriglyceridemia, plasma cholesterol was disproportionately elevated (95 +/- 23 vs 73 +/- 23, P = 0.002, fasted and 90 +/- 24 vs 61 +/- 14, P < 0.0001, fed). Lipoprotein fractionation showed increased VLDL and IDL + LDL with an increased cholesterol/triglyceride ratio (0.114 vs 0.065, P = 0.02, in VLDL). The VLDL apo E/apo B ratio was decreased 3.4-fold (P = 0.05) and apo CII and apo CIII decreased in proportion to apo E. Triglyceride and apo B production rates were normal, but clearance rates of VLDL triglycerides and postlipolysis lipoprotein "remnants" were significantly slowed. Plasma apo B was significantly elevated. Unlike HuCII- and HuCIII-transgenic mice, VLDL from HuCI transgenic mice bound heparin-Sepharose, a model for cell-surface glycosaminoglycans, normally. In summary, apo CI overexpression is associated with decreased particulate uptake of apo B-containing lipoproteins, leading to increased levels of several potentially atherogenic species, including cholesterol-enriched VLDL, IDL, and LDL. 相似文献

The infiltration of pancreatic islets by mononuclear cells is the hallmark of the development of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) in the NOD mouse, an animal model for human IDDM. The aim, of this study was to correlate adhesion molecule expression with the degree of islet infiltration and to compare Th1- and Th2-driven islet inflammation. Cryostat sections of NOD mouse pancreata before and after diabetes development were analysed by semiquantitative immunohistochemistry. NOD mouse islets did not show the expression of ICAM-1, LFA-1, L-selectin and VCAM-1 prior to infiltration by mononuclear cells. Furthermore, islets with early stage insulitis (grade 1, periinsular location of small infiltrates) still were devoid of adhesion molecule expression. ICAM-1 and LFA-1 were first demonstrable in islets with strong periinsular infiltrates (insulitis grade 2) while L-selectin and VCAM-1 were only seen in islets with mild or strong intraislet infiltration (grade 3-4). Adhesion molecules were demonstrable in areas of macrophage and T-lymphocyte infiltrates but not in adjacent endocrine islet tissue. Islets of all infiltration stages contained Th2 lymphocytes (positive for IL-4). Substantial numbers of Th1 cells (positive for IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, IL-2 and/or IL-2 receptor) were observed only after acceleration of diabetes development by a single injection of cyclophosphamide (250 mg/kg i.p.). Interestingly, the adhesion molecule expression pattern in islets with "Th1' versus "Th2 insulitis' was not different. In conclusion, the expression of adhesion molecules in islets during the development of autoimmune diabetes does not precede mononuclear infiltration but probably occurs in response to the activation of initial small infiltrates. ICAM-1 and LFA-1 expression is seen prior to L-selectin and VCAM-1. However, adhesion molecule expression during Th1 versus Th2 cell infiltration is very similar, suggesting similar adhesion molecule requirements of the two Th subsets. 相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a third order hierarchical basis WENO interpolation, which possesses similar accuracy and stability properties as usual WENO interpolations. The main motivation for the hierarchical approach is the direct applicability on sparse grids. This is for instance of large practical interest in the numerical solution of conservation laws with uncertain data, where discontinuities in the physical domain often carry over to the (potentially high-dimensional) stochastic domain. For this, we apply the introduced hierarchical basis WENO interpolation within a non-intrusive collocation method and present first results on 2- and 3-dimensional sparse grids. 相似文献
