Case-control study of pancreatic cancer in Serbia, Yugoslavia

To determine the cardiac output change in neonates who were under nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, eleven newborn neonates, who were admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit with respiratory diseases, were enrolled in the study. Cardiac output was measured by pulsed Doppler echocardiogram at various pressures of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 cm H2O and revealed 301 +/- 47, 300 +/- 49, 289 +/- 55, 275 +/- 64, 269 +/- 59 and 242 +/- 50 ml/min/kg, respectively. Cardiac output depressed significantly between 0 cm H2O and 8 cm H2O (P = 0.025), and between 0 cm H2O and 10 cm H2O (P = 0.004). We conclude that cardiac output may be depressed in neonates who are under high levels of nasal CPAP therapy, and suggest that high levels of nasal CPAP therapy must be used with caution, especially when the therapy is applied to the low birth weight neonates.     

Hemolytic Activity,Cytotoxicity, and Antimicrobial Effects of Silver Nanoparticles Conjugated with Lincomycin or Cefazolin

The overuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of resistant bacteria. A good alternative is silver nanoparticles, which have antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including multidrug-resistant strains. Their combination with already known antibiotics has a synergistic effect. In this work, we studied the synthesis of conjugates of silver nanoparticles with two antibiotics, lincomycin and cefazolin. Albumin and glutathione were used as spacer shells with functional groups. The physicochemical properties of the obtained conjugates, their cytotoxicity and synergism of antimicrobial activity were studied. The 50% antimicrobial activity of the obtained samples was shown, which allows them to be recommended for use as topical drug preparations.

The interaction of atrial natriuretic peptide with other bioregulators of kidney function in chronic glomerulonephritis in children

A study was made of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activity and plasmic concentrations of atrial natriuretic peptide (NUP) as well as antidiuretic hormone in children with primary glomerulonephritis. A close relationship was established of these parameters in regulation of water-salt homeostasis. The above systems are involved in pathogenesis of childhood glomerulonephritis. This finding should be considered in development of pathogenetically validated therapy of glomerulonephritis, including introduction of synthetic NUP.     

Rheumatic diseases in China: ILAR-China study comparing the prevalence of rheumatic symptoms in northern and southern rural populations

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of rheumatic diseases in Han Chinese in north and south China. METHODS: Samples of 4192 adults in the Beijing (north) and 5057 in the Shantou (south) areas, based on village administration registers, were studied. The same questionnaire was administered by doctors who then examined those with rheumatic symptoms. One observer (QYZ) took part in both studies. RESULTS: The prevalence of definite rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was 0.34% (95% CI; 0.20-0.51) in the north and 0.32% (0.16-0.47) in the south. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) was noted in 0.26% of both samples (95% CI; 0.11-0.42 north and 0.14-0.40 south). Only 3 cases of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in the north and one in the south were identified. General rheumatic pain was reported more frequently in the north. Lumbar problems were recorded on examination 5 times more frequently in the north than in the south [men, 25%:5.3%; women 38%:6.5%] and knee problems 10 times more frequently [men, 24%:1.8%; women, 36%:3.4%] in the north. The difference was greatest in the 55 to 64 year age group. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of RA was similar to that in other rural populations and Japan, but only half that reported from other industrialized communities. The prevalence of AS was similar to that in most Caucasian populations. SLE was too infrequent to establish a prevalence with confidence, but did not differ from that in other populations. A study is planned in the south to assess the contribution of interobserver error and/or differences in cultural response to the north/south differences observed in the prevalence of general rheumatic symptoms and back pain.     

Biochemical mechanisms of the antihypoxic effect of amichlorphen (diethylaminoethylamide parachlorphenoxyacetic acid)

Test set up on albino rats demonstrated a preliminary introduction of amichlophene to prevent a hypoxic fall in the level of highly ergastic compounds in the tissues owing to stimulation of the mitochondrial respiration processes and increased energy-producting effectiveness of the latter. The beneficial effect of amichlophen on the bioenergetics of the tissues in acute hypoxia is largely caused by the continued structural and functional integrity of the mitochondria, lysosomes and other cellular organellae which is due to the inhibitory action of the compound on the prosses of lipids reoxidation and to the activity of phospholipase A.     

Variants in using the tubed pedicle in restorative operations on the face and the organs of the oral cavity

This article is based on 83 histories (89% male, 11% female) of patients who were operated for penetrating or superficial maxillofacial defects and deformations. 293 step-by-step operations were conducted using the bucket-handle graft in combination with nearest tissues. Age of patients: from 18 to 65. The Filatov-Gillies tubed pedicle was used as a carrier for hair-covering chin grafts which were implanted into de-epidermized zones during the formation of eyebrows in supraorbital areas. Bucket-handle graft was also used for reconstruction of lips, including vermillion border. The article contains the history and a photo of a woman who was operated for basaloma of nose and upper lip. After the destruction of a new growth by cryogenic method the plasty of upper lip and vermillion border was carried out with the help of one Filatov-Gillies tubed pedicle. The healing of wounds have proceeded without complications in 93.9 +/- 1.4% of cases. In 2 patients a partial necrosis of graft took place. One graft was removed. The divergence of stitches was marked in 15 (18%) of patients. Nevertheless it did not influence upon the outcome of reconstructive treatment.     

Zoonotic intestinal parasites of hamadryas baboons Papio hamadryas in the western and northern regions of Saudi Arabia

Six hundred and thirty-three faecal samples were randomly collected and examined for ova and cysts of intestinal parasites from five groups of hamadryas baboons of different population densities, with different human contact and in different ecological conditions (Al-Baha, Turabah and Al-Taif in south-western and Al-Rihat and Al-Akhal in north-western Saudi Arabia). Nine parasites were recorded (Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, Escherichia coli, Balantidium coli, Enterobius sp., Trichuris sp., Hookworm, Hymenolepis nana and Schistosoma mansoni) in 274 samples (43.28%). The prevalence of parasites was high (36.0-58.5%) in areas of mild, cool climatic conditions, where baboons were at high density and had maximum human contact. However, in an area (Al-Akhal) of hot, dry climatic conditions, low baboon density and minimum human contact, the parasites' prevalence was very low (9.5%). The concentration of parasites (ova or cysts per g of faeces) was medium. Post-mortem examination of 24, 20, 19 and 13 baboons from Al-Baha, Al-Taif, Turabah and Al-Rihat revealed most of the parasites recorded in random faecal samples at prevalence rates of 37.5, 30.0, 36.0 and 23.0% respectively. The overall prevalence rate was 32.9%. Most of the parasites recorded in baboons were also recorded in humans in the areas of study.
