Diporeia, formerly the dominant benthic macroinvertebrate in the Great Lakes, remains a keystone species in Lake Superior. Little is known, however, about fine scale amphipod distributions, especially as influenced by the production, transport and transformation of energy resources. Here, we document the distribution and abundance of Diporeia along 19 transects around the lake's perimeter. Regions of elevated density, averaging 958 ± 408 Diporeia/m2 (mean ± S.D.) were observed along all transects, typically within slope habitat (depth of 30–125 m). Waters shoreward (shelf habitat, < 30 m) and lakeward (profundal habitat, > 125 m) of these regions supported significantly lower densities, averaging 239 ± 178/m2 and 106 ± 59/m2, respectively. Amphipods within regions of elevated density, termed here the Ring of Fire, account for two-thirds of the lakewide population while occupying only one-quarter of the benthic habitat. The Ring of Fire, observed lakewide as a band averaging 14.2 ± 9.4 km in width, is characterized as a region of transitional sediment deposition with gentle slope, proximate to nearshore locations of elevated primary production. Within the Ring of Fire exceptionally high densities are found in the south central region, where the Keweenaw Current and slope bathymetries serve to funnel production from adjoining regions of high production. Density measurements for the 173 stations sampled here are used to estimate lakewide Diporeia standing stock (22.5–37.7 trillion individuals, 4.4–7.4 Gg dry weight, 2.1–3.5 Gg C), individual and biomass density (274–460/m2, 0.05–0.09 g DW/m2, 0.03–0.04 gC/m2) and areal (0.02–0.03 g C/m2/yr) and total (1.6–2.6 Gg C/yr) production.  相似文献

The Cauliflower Mosaic Virus “35S promotor” (p35S) and the Agrobacterium “Nopaline Synthase” terminator (tNOS) are the most represented generic recombinant elements in commercial genetically modified crops to date. A set of four new SYBR®Green qPCR methods targeting the “p35S” and “tNOS” core elements have been developed. These qPCR methods generate short amplicons of 147 and 75 bp for the “p35S” element and 172 and 69 bp for the “tNOS” element. Single target plasmids containing these amplicons were constructed and allow determining the nominal melting temperature (T m value) of each amplicon. The four methods are specific for their respective targets, and moreover, three of them are highly sensitive (up to 1–2 copies detectable) at a PCR efficiency ranging between 95 and 100%. The latter methods can detect their respective targets at 0.1% (w/w) gDNA levels and are suitable for detecting low levels of genetically modified materials containing the “p35S” and/or “tNOS” elements.  相似文献

n-Heptane insoluble contents were determined for an extraheavy-oil vacuum residue, one petroleum and one coal pitch as a function of particle size. This variable was found to affect the yields of insoluble material, aspect which was also observed during extractions carried out with aromatic and halogenated solvents. The precision of results was observed to be independent on the operators. A study was carried out to determine the effect of sample drying time on fraction yields. It was found that maltene fractions were strongly dependent on this variable, whereas asphaltene fractions were totally independent

Predissolution in aromatic solvents proved worthless from the repeatability point of view. However, predissolution of the oil residue in CH2Cl2 followed by filtration and asphaltene precipitation with simultaneous solvent removal, was deemed to be a suitable technique to remove mineral matter and isolate asphaltenes in a single step

Sample oxidation during asphaltene precipitation and isolation was detected by gravimetric and spectroscopic techniques. This fact is very important since common precipitation techniques do not address this issue

Preliminary accelerated extraction experiments carried out with pitch samples at high temperature and pressure, revealed that this approach can be a very interesting research tool to investigate solubility properties.  相似文献

The formation of volatile compounds during the Bacillus subtilis fermentation of cooked, roasted soya bean cotyledons was investigated. The materials examined were: dry roasted cotyledons; autoclaved, roasted cotyledons; and autoclaved, roasted cotyledons fermented for 18 h and 36 h at 35°C. Growth of B subtilis led to the formation of many volatile compounds. The volatile compounds formed in the largest amounts during fermentation were 3-hydroxy-2-butanone (acetoin), 2,5-dimethylpyrazine and trimethylpyrazine. Compounds present at concentrations exceeding their odour threshold values included nonanal, decanal, 1-octen-3-ol, butanedione, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, 3-octanone, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, 3,6-dimethyl-2-ethylpyrazine, 2-pentylfuran, dimethyl sulfide, benzaldehyde and 2-methoxyphenol. Compounds found in 18 h fermented cotyledons which were absent, or present in much lower concentrations, in roasted or autoclaved cotyledons included several aliphatic ketones, acetic acid, two aliphatic esters, several pyrazines, 2-pentylfuran, dimethyl sulphide, 2-methoxyphenol and trimethyloxazole. The total mass of volatile compounds present after 36 h incubation was less than half that present after 18 h. This was mainly due to the disappearance of 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine and 2,6-dimethylpyrazine. The biogenesis of the volatile compounds is discussed. © 1997 SCI.  相似文献

There is growing concern in the United States about avoidable, unjust differences in health associated with sociodemographic characteristics, such as socioeconomic status and race/ethnicity. This concern has sparked research to identify how disparities develop and how they can be reduced. Studies showing that disparities occur at all levels of socioeconomic status, not simply at the very bottom, suggest that psychosocial factors play an important role. The provision of psychological (e.g., psychotherapy, coparenting, mediation, collaborative divorce, child custody evaluation) services for families of divorce are growing specialties for many clinical and forensic psychologists. However, practice in domestic relations psychology, such as divorce and custody assessment and testimony, is a high-risk venture for incurring ethics complaints and law suits. The lead article and the three commentaries that follow enumerate the various roles practitioners might play, clarify how each role requires specific skill sets that may be outside one’s particular competence and necessitate additional training, describe how countertransferential issues arise, urge meticulous record keeping, discuss some of the subtleties of confidentiality and the releasing of information, describe how transparency in clarifying expectations leads to a lowering of contentiousness, and provide tips for divorce and forensic practice. The special challenges associated with psychologists being tempted to move beyond their role on a case and those of particularly high-risk situations (e.g., complaints of child abuse or domestic violence) are also discussed. Suggestions are offered to help psychologists better serve the public while taking steps to better inoculate themselves from complaints. Theories of probabilistic cognition postulate that internal representations are made up of multiple simultaneously held hypotheses, each with its own probability of being correct (henceforth, “probability distributions”). However, subjects make discrete responses and report the phenomenal contents of their mind to be all-or-none states rather than graded probabilities. How can these 2 positions be reconciled? Selective attention tasks, such as those used to study crowding, the attentional blink, rapid serial visual presentation, and so forth, were recast as probabilistic inference problems and used to assess how graded, probabilistic representations may produce discrete subjective states. The authors asked subjects to make multiple guesses per trial and used 2nd-order statistics to show that (a) visual selective attention operates in a graded fashion in time and space, selecting multiple targets to varying degrees on any given trial; and (b) responses are generated by a process of sampling from the probabilistic states that result from graded selection. The authors concluded that although people represent probability distributions, their discrete responses and conscious states are products of a process that samples from these probabilistic representations. This paper examines a composite damage constitutive model, MAT58, in LS-DYNA and its application for use in braided composite tube axial crush simulations. The constitutive response of MAT58 was investigated using single element simulations. It was found that MAT58 reproduced the softening behavior of the braided composite under monotonic compressive loading, but failed in subsequent unloading and tensile loading cycles. A deficiency in the damage law in MAT58 was identified. Unloading and reloading a volume of material that had suffered some degree of damage was a part of the process with the progressing of crush zone during the axial crush of composite tubes. Consequently, this deficiency hinders the success of MAT58 in such applications. In tri-axial braided composite tube axial crush simulations, although the predicted initial peak forces were within 20% of the experimental values, the predictions for the specific energy absorption (SEA) values were consistently low, particularly for tubes without a plug as crush initiator. These discrepancies are attributable to the deficiency in the damage law in MAT58.  相似文献
