Groundwater of Assam (India) contains excessive amounts of As(III) and Fe(II). The rural and semi-urban population of Assam uses indigenous household iron filters fabricated using community prepared wooden charcoal (CPWC) to reduce Fe(II) concentration, however no efforts are made to reduce As(III) concentrations before use. The present work is directed toward assessing the potential of CPWC for metal removal from mono- and binary-metal ion systems comprising of Fe(II) and As(III) through continuous mode column studies. A decrease in breakthrough throughput volumes (VB) from mono- and binary-metal ion systems is observed with increase in flow rates and decrease in bed depths. The order of breakthrough of metal ions observed as As(III) followed by Fe(II) from binary-metal ion system and hence the VB for As(III) is termed as critical VB as Fe(II) is yet to breakthrough through the beds. An early breakthrough for Fe(II) and As(III) from binary-metal ion system compared to respective mono-metal ion systems is observed for all the cases of flow rates and bed depths. It indicates impact on the uptake of a selected metal ion [either Fe(II) or As(III)] by the presence of the other metal ion [either As(III) or Fe(II)] present in the binary-metal ion system. The minimum and maximum errors involved between the predicted and experimental BDST curves for As(III) uptake till critical VB from the binary-metal ion system varied between 1.0% and 24.8%.  相似文献

Surface functionalization studies for re-creating a ‘Lotus Leaf’ effect (super-hydrophobic) have been carried out for the past few decades, looking for the material which can provide high transparency, low energy surface, and high surface roughness. However, the conventional fabrication processes of super-hydrophobic surface proposed by the previous researchers were reported to be complicated. Therefore, in this research, we had created an alternative ways to produce near-super-hydrophobic surfaces using simplest processing routes with a controlled modification. The fabrication of polydimethylsiloxane/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) hybrid thin film matrix on glass to produce near-super-hydrophobic surfaces is presented in this paper. There are three important parameters studied in producing hydrophobic surfaces based on the hybrid thin films; concentration of polydimethylsiloxane, concentration of MWCNTs, and droplet sizes, respectively. The study is carried out using polydimethylsiloxane of varied cross linker ratio (10:1, 30:1, and 50:1) with MWCNTs concentration of 1, 10, and 15 mg for 0.5, 2.0, 5.0, and 10 μl droplet sizes. The resulting hybrid elastomer-nanotube matrix thin films show that hydrophobicity increased with increasing cross linker ratio and MWCNTs percentage in the polydimethylsiloxane solution. A near-super-hydrophobic surface can be created when using 15 mg of MWCNTs with 50:1 cross linker ratio polydimethylsiloxane thin films, measured on 10 μl droplet size. The hybrid thin films produced can be potentially tailored to the application of biosensors, MEMS, and even commercial devices.  相似文献

This work describes the effect of a repetitive cooking-chilling process on resistant starch content in crackers prepared from a mixture of fish and starch, which are popularly known in Malaysia as “keropok.” Three fish cracker formulations were prepared using tapioca, wheat, and sago starch. Up to four cycles of repetitive cooking-chilling increased the resistant starch content in all products; however, the hardness of chilled samples decreased, and their moisture content increased. For the fried samples, the texture became harder, the color turned darker, and linear expansion was reduced. The dried fish cracker samples prepared with sago starch yielded the highest resistant starch content. The results demonstrated that four cycles of repetitive cooking-chilling were able to enhance resistant starch in fish crackers.  相似文献

Confronted with the contemporary challenges of maximising energy efficiency with minimal impact on the environment, the automotive industry has developed various technologies to tackle them. Most of these technologies, however, have wider implications on the tribological performance of the automotive engines due to resultant soot build-up. This paper reviews the effects that attempts by stakeholders to satisfy requirements for reduced fuel consumption, reduced emissions and extended service intervals have had on increasing soot levels to an extent that can lead to engine component failure. Three areas have been identified that have either not been explored or not widely explored in the study of automotive soot namely: numerical simulation and modelling of soot wear, soot effects on wear of actual engine components and the wear and friction performance of non-metallic materials used in internal combustion engines. A paper-grading system is also utilised to present an overview of how sooty oil-related research covers various areas.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of vibro-acoustic modeling and simulation using the finite element and the boundary element methods for the free piston engine structure. A model of the engine was constructed through the use of finite element software to perform a normal mode analysis of the engine structure. The objective was to determine the mode shapes and the natural frequency that contribute to engine structure vibration. Theoretical development of the engine balance motion and frequency response was also conducted. From the simulation and finite element analysis, the force response pattern of the engine vibration was determined and then compared with its natural frequency. The vibration data were used as the input data for noise analysis using the boundary element method. The integration of the finite element and the boundary element determined the noise-frequency data of the engine structure toward the occurrence of engine noise. The information can be used by designers to analyze engine specifications and structure, especially at the preliminary design stage.  相似文献

This article investigates the tribological behavior of nanoparticles (NPs) of titanium dioxide anatase TiO2 (A), graphene, and TiO2 (A) + graphene added to the pure base oil group ΙΙ (PBO-GΙΙ). The morphology of these two nanostructures of TiO2 (A) and graphene was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Oleic acid (OA) was blended as a surfactant into the formulation to help stabilize the NPs in the lubricant oil. A four-ball test rig was used to determine the tribological performance of six different samples, and an image acquisition system was used to examine and measure the wear scar diameter of the stationary balls. Field emission–scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was used to examine the wear morphology. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), element mapping, and Raman spectroscopy were employed to confirm the presence of (TiO2 (A) + graphene) and the formation of a tribolayer/film on the mating surfaces. Moreover, a 3D optical surface texture analyzer was utilized to investigate the scar topography and tribological performance. The experiments proved that adding (0.4?wt% TiO2 (A) + 0.2?wt% graphene) to the PBO-GΙΙ optimized its tribological behavior. These excellent results can be attributed to the dual additive effect and the formation of a tribofilm of NPs during sliding motion. Furthermore, the average reductions in the coefficient of friction (COF), wear scar diameter (WSD), and specific wear rate (SWR) were 38.83, 36.78, and 15.78%, respectively, for (0.4?wt% TiO2 (A) + 0.2?wt% graphene) nanolubricant compared to plain PBO-GΙΙ lubricant.  相似文献

In the process of service life prediction or estimation of building and construction components and materials, data of the prevailing exposure environment, (the conditions at and around a building or construction) is required. However, most environmental data is measured by and available from meteorological and air quality research communities. This data is collected at macro and meso levels, some distance from the object studied, and raises the need to transform data in order to describe the specific, local conditions adjacent to that object. To estimate levels of degradation agents in the exposure environment, especially those close to the building or construction at local and micro levels have to be considered. This paper will show and discuss useful environmental data sources, and how to transform such data by means of available distribution models.

Lorsqu'il s'agit de faire des prévisions ou des estimations de durée de vie de bâtiments ainsi que de composants et matériaux de construction, il faut disposer des données sur les conditions prévalantes d'exposition et d'environnement (conditions qui règnent dans un bâtiment ou à proximité). Or, la plupart des données environnementales sont mesurées et fournies par des instituts de recherche en météorologie et qualité de l'air. Ces données sont collectées à grande et à moyenne échelle, à une certaine distance de l'objet étudié, et elles doivent donc être transformées si l'on veut décrire les conditions spécifiques locales à proximité dudit objet. Pour estimer le niveau de dégradation dans l'environnement d'exposition, notamment à proximité des bâtiments ou constructions, il faut considérer les agents au micro-niveau et au niveau local. Cet article présente et examine des sources de données environnementales utiles et montre comment transformer ces données en utilisant les modèles de distribution existants.  相似文献

In the hot and humid climate, stack ventilation is inefficient due to small temperature difference between the inside and outside of naturally ventilated buildings. Hence, solar induced ventilation is a feasible alternative in enhancing the stack ventilation. This paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of a proposed solar induced ventilation strategy, which combines a roof solar collector and a vertical stack, in enhancing the stack ventilation performance in the hot and humid climate. The methodology selected for the investigation is physical experimental modelling which was carried out in the actual environment. The results are presented and discussed in terms of two performance variables: air temperature and air velocity. The findings indicate that the proposed strategy is able to enhance the stack ventilation, both in semi-clear sky and overcast sky conditions. The highest air temperature difference between the air inside the stack and the ambient air (TiTo) is achieved in the semi-clear sky condition, which is about 9.9 °C (45.8 °C–35.9 °C). Meanwhile, in the overcast sky condition, the highest air temperature difference (TiTo) is 6.2 °C (39.3 °C–33.1 °C). The experimental results also indicate good agreement with the theoretical results for the glass temperature, the air temperature in the roof solar collector’s channel and the absorber temperature. The findings also show that wind has significant effect to the induced air velocity by the proposed strategy.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Magnesium layered hydroxide (MLH) intercalated with anionic 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)propionic acid (MPP) was synthesised by a direct reaction method using magnesium oxide and MPP as precursors. A further coating of chitosan was applied on the external surface of MLH–MPP nanocomposite to form a new material, named MLH–MPP/chitosan nanocomposite. The XRD pattern showed an intense and sharp peak at basal spacing 18.9 Å, proving that MPP anions were successfully intercalated into the interlayer gallery of MLH in a monolayer arrangement. The XRD pattern of the MLH–MPP/chitosan nanocomposite shows similar peaks with the MLH–MPP nanocomposite. The result was also supported by FTIR spectra and elemental analysis. TGA/DTG spectra showed that the thermal stabilities of the guest anion in the both nanocomposites were markedly enhanced. A controlled-release study of the MPP ion from the MLH–MPP/chitosan nanocomposite showed a slower release compared to MLH–MPP nanocomposite with an initial rapid release and slow release thereafter. Meanwhile, the release behaviours of MPP ions from both nanocomposites were governed by pseudo-second order kinetics. This result highlights the potential of the nanocomposite as an encapsulated material for the controlled-release formulation of MPP anions.  相似文献
