State of uranyl phosphates and arsenates in aqueous solutions

The state of uranyl phosphates and arsenates (UO₂)₃(PO₄)₂·nH₂O and (UO₂)₃(AsO₄)₂·nH₂O in aqueous solutions in the interval of pH 1–14 was studied by X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, thermography, and chemical analysis. The composition and structure of the initial solid phases vary depending on the solution acidity. The equilibrium constants of the reactions occurring in the heterogeneous systems (UO₂)₃(B^VO₄)₂·nH₂O (B^V = P, As)-aqueous solution were calculated. The speciation diagrams of the solid phases and equilibrium solutions were plotted.     

Influence of the method of synthesis on properties of cadmium telluride films synthesized in highly nonequilibrium conditions

The results of comparative studies of electrical and galvanomagnetic properties of cadmium telluride films are reported. The films were synthesized under highly nonequilibrium conditions by the methods of a thermal screen and a quasi-closed volume. The temperature dependences of the conductivity, Hall coefficient, and effective Hall mobility are reported. As a result of experimental data, it is concluded that the method of a thermal screen favorably affects the stoichiometry of the composition and, thus, is conducive to obtaining films with a lower concentration of defects.     

Identification of atypical Aeromonas salmonicida: inter-laboratory evaluation and harmonization of methods

Estrogen therapy increases plasma HDL levels, which may reduce cardiovascular risk in postmenopausal women. The mechanism of action of estrogen in influencing various steps in hepatic HDL and apolipoprotein (apo) A-I synthesis and secretion are not fully understood. In this study, we have used the human hepatoblastoma cell line (Hep G2) as an in vitro model system to delineate the effect of estradiol on multiple regulatory steps involved in hepatic HDL metabolism. Incubation of Hep G2 cells with estradiol resulted in the following statistically significant findings: (1) increased accumulation of apoA-I in the medium without affecting uptake/removal of radiolabeled HDL-protein; (2) accelerated incorporation of [3H]leucine into apoA-I; (3) selective increase in [3H]leucine incorporation into lipoprotein (LP) A-I but not LP A-I+A-II HDL particles (HDL particles without and with apoA-II, respectively); (4) increased ability of apoA-I-containing particles to efflux cholesterol from fibroblasts; (5) stimulated steady state apoA-I but not apoA-II mRNA expression; and (6) increased newly transcribed apoA-I mRNA message without effect on apoA-I mRNA half-life. The data indicate that estradiol stimulates newly transcribed hepatic apoA-I mRNA, resulting in a selective increase in LP A-I, a subfraction of HDL that is associated with decreased atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, especially in premenopausal women.     

Electrochemical behavior of Fe-Si-B-Nb-Cu amorphous-crystalline alloy

The electrochemical behavior of amorphous and amorphous-crystalline Fe_76.1Si_13.8B_6.1Nb_3.0Cu_1.0 alloys in H₂SO₄ solutions is studied with the use of the potentiodynamic polarization method. Structure phase states and changes in the elemental composition of the electrochemically treated surfaces of specimens are studied with the use of X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive analysis. The conclusion is drawn that a two-layer passive film is formed on the alloy surfaces studied.
