Antibiotic activity of cultures of the species of the genus Actinomadura

Sixty five cultures of Actinomadura were isolated from samples of different soils. The study of their antibiotic activity on liquid nutrient media showed that 49 of them were active against gram-postive bacteria. The antibiotics isolated fromsome cultures of Am. carminata, Am. rubra, Am. coerulea and Am. luteofluorescens had antitumor effect in experiments on animals.     

In vivo and in vitro studies of 15alpha-hydroxyprogesterone in the human placenta

Studies were conducted to determine the fate of 15alpha-hydroxyprogesterone in human placental tissue. Tritiated 15alpha-hydroxyprogesterone was perfused through normal human placentas in situ at the time of Cesarean section and incubated with a 10,000x g microsomal supernate of the placenta in vitro. In both systems the substrate, but no additional metabolites were identified. These findings indicate that 15alpha-hydroxyprogesterone is not metabolized during its passage in the human term placenta, and suggests that because of its fetal origin clinical measurements of 15alpha-hydroxyprogesterone may provide a valuable index to the status of fetal viability.     

Epidemiology of chronic, precancerous and oncologic diseases in workers of asbestos and cement industry

Hygienic, clinical and epidemiologic screening was performed in staff of asbestos and cement goods production enterprise. Various dystrophic processes of pharynx and nasal cavity appeared to prevail among upper respiratory tract diseases. Average exposure to dust during 22 years at the stated production can lead to asbestosis 0-I stage, average exposure during 20.5 years can result in dust bronchitis and occupational allergic dermatosis can result from average exposure to dust during 21 years. Retrospective cohort study of mortality within 1949-1988 failed to find oncologic risk in workers engaged into asbestos and cement goods production higher than in general population.
