Practical knowledge on how to tailor research methods for Asian Americans is relatively scarce despite the rapid population growth of this ethnic group and the ongoing calls for greater cultural competence among researchers. Based on a 4-year qualitative study of family and cultural issues in diabetes management among Chinese American immigrants, this article presents data-based analyses of culturally nuanced group interview processes, and recommendations for conducting culturally appropriate group interviews. Group interview processes were prominently shaped by four cultural norms: sensitivity to social hierarchy, monitoring public display of strong emotions, face concerns, and emphasis on group harmony. Strategies for facilitating open and dynamic group interviews in the presence of these norms were identified. Skillful facilitation of group processes, either by accommodating or diffusing norms, was required to promote participant rapport and encourage disclosure of everyday experience. A peroral sugar-reducing preparation gliquidone (glurenorm) was tried in treatment of 66 patients with digestive diseases (peptic ulcer, chronic pancreatitis, cirrhosis of the liver), presenting with diabetes mellitus. The results of the studies made showed glurenorm to be a highly effective preparation in term of both its sugar-reducing effect and its capability to improve energy processes in gastric and duodenal mucosa, pancreacytes, hepatocytes, besides which, it appear to dispel metabolic disturbances and stimulate reparative processes in body organs, improves protein-synthetic processes in the liver, pancreas, mucosa of the gastroduodenal region.  相似文献

Several new genes and markers have recently been identified on the proximal short arm of the human X chromosome in the area of Xp11.23. We had previously generated a YAC contig in this region extending from UBE1 to the OATL1 locus. In this report two polymorphic dinucleotide repeats, DXS6949 and DXS6950, were isolated and characterized from the OATL1 locus. A panel of YAC deletion derivatives from the distal portion of the contig was used in conjunction with the rest of the YAC map to position the new microsatellites and order other markers localizing to this interval. The marker order was determined to be DXS1367-ZNF81-DXS6849-ZNF21-DXS6616-DXS 6950-DXS6949. In the proximal region below OATL1, we have isolated a pair of YACs from the GATA locus, B1026 and C01160. Mapping within these YACs indicates the orientation of DXS1126 and DXS1240, while a cosmid near the OATL1 region reveals the overlap between the YAC contigs from the two loci. This cosmid contains the gene responsible for Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) and localizes the disease gene between OATL1 and GATA. These data enable the expansion of the present physical map of the X chromosome from UBE1 to the GATA locus, covering a large portion of the Xp11.23 region. Genetic cross-overs in Xp11.23 support the marker orientation and the position of WAS, contrary to previous reports. With the integration of both physical and genetic maps we have predicted the following marker order: Xpter-UBE1-SYN1/ARAF1/ TIMP1-DXS1367-ZNF81-DXS.6849-ZNF21-DXSy6616++ +-(OATL1, DXS6950-DXS6949)- WAS-(GATA, DXS1126)-DXS1240-Xcen.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Increasing power demands have necessitated the development of energy efficient systems in the industrial sector. At present, about 10% of the overall electric power used by large industrial plants is consumed by high-capacity compressors supplying compressed air. Likewise, in a gas turbine power plant, nearly half the generated power is used for driving the compressor. The work of compression is proportional to inlet air temperature, and cooling the inlet air can save considerable amount of power in large turbo machines during hot summer months. Inlet fogging is a popular means of inlet air cooling, and fog nozzles are the most critical components in an inlet fogging installation. Majority of these installations employ impaction pin nozzles. In the present work, experiments are conducted over a wide range of operating parameters in variable length wind tunnels of different cross sections in order to investigate the performance of impaction pin nozzle in inlet fogging. Flow visualization and measurements are carried out to analyze the fog behavior and identify suitable nozzle locations in typical air ducts. The results show that impaction pin nozzles are suitable for inlet fogging applications.  相似文献

Twenty-two amylolytic bifidobacteria grown in BHI-starch media were compared for the amylase activity of the intra- and extra-cellular enzymes. The activity of the cells grown in the liquid medium differed considerably. Among the strains tested B. adolescentis Int57 and B. adolescentis ZS8 exhibited higher activities than others. In rice medium containing 0.05% -cysteine·HCl and 0.2% yeast extract, the amylolytic Bifidobacterium strains grew considerably better than non-amylolytic Bifidobacterium strains. B. adolescentis Int57, which showed highest growth and amylase activity in the rice medium, was chosen and rice fermentation was investigated. The titratable acidity (TA) reached 2.43 and pH decreased to 4.4 after 24 h fermentation. The relative ratio of acetic acid to lactic acid gradually decreased during fermentation. The concentration of reducing sugar and amylase activity gradually increased and reached 14 mg maltose equivalent/ml and 35 mU/ml min, respectively, in 24 h. The accumulated reducing sugar was mostly maltotriose. The layer-separation of fermented product was stabilized by the addition of 1% gelatin. It was suggested that amylolytic bifidobacteria may be used for the production of fermented rice products.  相似文献

Zeolite formation in Class F fly ash blended cement pastes is under investigation. A Na–P type zeolite and Zeolite Y were synthesized from Class F fly ash and NaOH solution after 2 days of aging at room temperature and 6 days of curing at 80°C. However, no zeolites formed when KOH was used. In additional experiments, a Na–P type zeolite, Zeolite Y, and chabazite developed in cement pastes blended with Class F fly ash and NaOH solution which had been aged 2 days at room temperature and then cured 6 days at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 90°C. Seeding the pastes with natural zeolites was also investigated.  相似文献

The bacterial component of marine biofilms plays an important role in the induction of larval settlement in the polychaete Hydroides elegans. In this study, we provide experimental evidence that bacterial metabolites comprise the chemical signal for larval settlement. Bacteria were isolated from biofilms, purified and cultured according to standard procedures. Bacterial metabolites were isolated from spent culture broth by chloroform extraction as well as by closed-loop stripping and adsorption of volatile components on surface-modified silica gel. A pronounced biological activity was exclusively observed when concentrated metabolites were adsorbed on activated charcoal. Larvae did not respond to waterborne metabolites when prevented from contacting the bacterial film surface. These results indicate that an association of the chemical signal with a sorbent-like substratum may be an essential cofactor for the expression of biological activity. The functional role of bacterial exopolymers as an adsorptive matrix for larval settlement signals is discussed.  相似文献

In the oxidation of cyclohexene with H2O2in monophasic tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP) solution catalyzed by Keggin-type 12-heteropolyacids, i.e., H3PMo12-xW x O40(x=0–12), several peroxo species were observed by 31P-NMR spectroscopy in lower field than the original heteropolyacids. Their composition varied regularly with that of the starting catalyst. The P-containing peroxo species formed was deduced as [PM4O8(O2)8]3-(M = Mo, W). The peroxo species formed more easily with a decrease in the W content, x of H3PMo12-xWxO40. It was further indicated from the reactivity with cyclohexene and the comparison with catalytic performance that W-rich peroxo species were catalytically more active than Mo-rich peroxo species for the oxidation of cyclohexene in this reaction system.  相似文献

Liquid–liquid (L–L) phase separation and its effects on crystallization in polypropylene (PP)/ethylene–propylene rubber (EPR) blends obtained by melt extrusion were investigated by time‐resolved light scattering (TRLS) and optical microscopy. L–L phase separation via spinodal decomposition (SD) was confirmed by TRLS data. After L–L phase separation at 250°C for various durations, blend samples were subjected to a temperature drop to 130°C for isothermal crystallization, and the effects of L–L phase separation on crystallization were investigated. Memory of the L–L phase separation via SD remained for crystallization. The crystallization rate decreased with increasing L–L phase‐separated time at 250°C. Slow crystallization for the long L–L phase‐separated time could be ascribed to decreasing chain mobility of PP with a decrease in the EPR component in the PP‐rich region. The propylene‐rich EPR exhibited good affinity with PP, leading to a slow growth of a concentration fluctuation during annealing. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Environment-friendly lime paints were prepared from 38 wt% slurries of hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2) and hydrated light burned dolomite (Ca(OH)2·Mg(OH)2). These materials and the resulting paints?? antibacterial and antimold properties were investigated. The hydrated lime used in this study contained 97 wt% Ca(OH)2, which implies a 71.85 wt% equivalence of CaO. This 71.85 wt% CaO content was responsible for the antibacterial and anti-mold characteristics. The antibacterial and anti-mold characteristics of the hydrated light burned dolomite were attributed to its 56 wt% CaO and 44 wt% MgO contents. The antibacterial-reducing activities of 38 wt% hydrated lime and hydrated light burned dolomite slurries were found to be 99%. Their anti-mold activities against mixed strains were outstanding. Lime paints produced from the slurries and various additives also showed 99% antibacterial activity and outstanding anti-mold activity. The paints?? low total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) releases were graded as excellent. Their formaldehyde (HCHO) releases were classed as best through excellent, indicating their suitability as environment-friendly building materials.  相似文献
