Ceramics based on partly stabilized zirconium dioxide: technology,structure, properties,and behavior under dynamic action

Technology is described for manufacturing dense ceramic from very fine powder based on zirconium dioxide partly stabilized with yttrium oxide. Some engineering properties of the manufactured ceramic are defined. Its microstructure and phase composition are studied. Ceramic properties with impact-wave loading are studied, and values of dynamic elastic limit and spalling strength are obtained.     

Innovative technologies for full utilization of ash generated at coal-fired thermal power stations for producing alumina and construction materials

The possibility of full 100% usage of ash from coal-fired thermal power stations for producing raw materials for the cement and alumina industries is considered, and it is shown that comprehensive processing of ash from coal-fired thermal power stations is required for this purpose.     

Numerical investigation of radiative heat exchange in the throats of helium cryostats

A mathematical model of radiative heat exchange in the throats of wide-necked helium cryostats is analyzed. Influence of a thin layer with arbitrary conductivity on the characteristics of acoustic waves in potassium niobate

The influence of a thin layer of arbitrary conductivity on the characteristics of acoustic waves in potassium niobate is investigated theoretically. The conductivity of a thin layer on the surface of a potassium niobate crystal or plate is shown to have a significant influence on the damping and velocity not only of symmetric Lamb waves and quasi-shear-horizontal waves but also of Gulyaev-Bleustein waves. It is found that a relative change in velocity as large as 50% can be achieved for quasi-shear-horizontal waves by altering the surface conductivity. The results obtained reveal great prospects of using potassium niobate to create acoustoelectronic devices with controllable characteristics. Pis’ma Zh. Tekh. Fiz. 25, 21–26 (April 26, 1999)

Relation between the space flight-induced frequency of dominant lethal mutations and the level of allozyme heterozygosity in Drosophila melanogaster populations

Currently, the treatment of falciparum malaria is seriously compromised by spreading drug resistance. We studied the effects of camptothecin, a potent and specific topoisomerase I inhibitor, on erythrocytic malaria parasites in vitro. In Plasmodium falciparum, camptothecin trapped protein-DNA complexes, inhibited nucleic acid biosynthesis, and was cytotoxic. These results provide proof for the concept that topoisomerase I is a vulnerable target for new antimalarial drug development.     

Diffusion coefficients in the lateral intercellular spaces of Madin-Darby canine kidney cell epithelium determined with caged compounds

The diffusion coefficients of two caged fluorescent dyes were measured in free solution and in the lateral intercellular spaces (LIS) of cultured Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells after photoactivation by illumination with a continuous or pulsed UV laser. Both quantitative video imaging and a new photometric method were utilized to determine the rates of diffusion of the caged fluorescent dyes: 8-((4,5-dimethoxy-2-nitrobenzyl)oxy)pyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid (DMNB-HPTS) and (4,5-dimethoxy-2-nitrobenzyl) fluorescein dextran (10,000 MW) (DMNB-caged fluorescein dextran). The diffusion coefficients at 37 degrees C in free solution were 3.3 x 10(-6) cm2/s (HPTS) and 0.98 x 10(-6) cm2/s (10,000 MW dextran). Diffusion of HPTS within nominally linear stretches of the LIS of MDCK cells grown on glass coverslips was indistinguishable from that in free solution, whereas dextran showed a 1.6 +/- 0.5-fold reduction in diffusivity. Measurements of HPTS diffusion within the LIS of multicellular regions also exhibited a diffusivity comparable to the free solution value. The restriction to diffusion of the dextran within the LIS may be due to molecular hindrance.
