Dosimetric support of the International Programme on the Health Effects of the Chernobyl Accident (IPHECA) pilot project: main results and problems

The problem of post-Chernobyl dosimetry is unique in its complexity in the history of radiation medicine and radiation protection. This is because the early experience of mass exposure of people (bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Windscale and South-Ural accidents, exposure of inhabitants of Nevada in the United States of America, the Semipalatinsk area in the former USSR, the Marshall Islands, and the Goi?nia accident in Brazil, and others) differed both in the much simpler structure of the irradiation source and in the number and characteristics of exposed persons. It is obvious that post-Chernobyl dosimetry, both as an independent problem, and as a tool for epidemiological studies, requires significant expertise and economic and technical expenditures. Extensive and deep research has been carried out in Ukraine for the past 10 years. This article reviews the main results of these studies.     

Results of peripheral iridectomy in narrow-angle glaucoma and of prophylactic iridectomy (author's transl)

During a period of three years 79 eyes with narrow-angle glucoma were operated on, and prophylactic iridectomy was performed in 55 eyes. In this way, narrow-angle glaucoma in the fellow eye, which frequently occurs, was prevented. There are less postoperative complications with therapeutic and prophylactic peripheral iridectomy than with filtering operations. In view of the pathogenesis of narrow-angle glaucoma peripheral iridectomy is the most economical and effective procedure for preventing another attack and narrow-angle glaucoma in the fellow eye.     

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy associated with a novel mutation in the mitochondrial tRNA(leu)(UUR) gene (A3243T)

We report a new mutation, an A-->T transition at nt 3243 in the mitochondrial tRNA(leu)(UUR) gene, in a 9-year-old girl who presented with muscle weakness of 3 years duration complicated by rapidly progressive encephalopathy. In muscle, the activity of the mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes I, III, and IV was markedly reduced. The mutation, involving a highly conserved base pair in the dihydrouridine loop, was heteroplasmic in muscle (81.4%), skin (69.3%), and blood (13.8%) and was not present in blood of 50 healthy individuals. The mitochondrial 3243 base is a "hot spot" for mutations; an A-->G transition at this position is found in a high proportion in most MELAS patients. Since the A-->T transition creates a new recognition site for the restriction enzyme TspRI, both ApaI and TspRI should be used to exclude a mutation at nt 3243.

Colocalization of barley lectin and sporamin in vacuoles of transgenic tobacco plants

So-called runting stunting syndrome (RSS) afflicts chicks worldwide. The present study in Georgia chicks is the first report of unique histologic features of RSS pathology in chicks in the United States. Various combinations of avian nephritis virus, enterovirus-612, and reovirus were always isolated from chick small intestines. Ultrastructurally, only small round viruses were seen in small intestinal lesions. Although finding intralesional virus in small intestinal segments from chicks with signs and gross lesions consistent with RSS constitutes a reasonable criterion for making a diagnosis of this disease, chicks without intralesional viruses and with bacterial or protozoal enteritis may also be small and abnormally feathered. Because just what constitutes RSS remains a diagnostic dilemma, we recommend that the use of the imprecise acronym "RSS" be discontinued.

New approaches to the therapy of rheumatoid arthritis

Design of highly selective biological substances made use of three basic components of a complex pathogenetic model of RA: the presence of antigen-presenting cells, genetic defects and autoimmune aggression. Efforts now are directed to development of monoclonal antibodies (MAB) to receptors of T-cells, B lymphocytes, MAB to CD 18 and CD54, cytokines, search for natural inhibitors of cytokines, introduction of cytokines. Many of such preparations including recombinant interferons proved clinically promising.
