We report on the design and performance of a fix-tuned /spl times/2/spl times/3/spl times/3 frequency multiplier chain that covers 1.55-1.75THz. The chain is nominally pumped with 100mW at W-band. At 120K the measured output power is larger than 4/spl mu/W across the band with a peak power of 100/spl mu/W at 1.665THz. A similar chain operated at room temperature produced a peak power of 21/spl mu/W. These power levels now make it possible to deploy multipixel heterodyne imaging arrays in this frequency range. 相似文献

This paper presents a new method of designing a beamformer having a desired nearfield broadband beampattern. The methodology uses the spherical harmonic solution to the wave equation to transform the desired nearfield beampattern to an equivalent farfield beampattern. A farfield beamformer is then designed for a transformed farfield beampattern that, if achieved, gives the desired nearfield pattern exactly. Salient features of the new method are as follows. (i) The nearfield patterns can be achieved for all angles, not just the primary look direction. (ii) There is no theoretical restriction on the bandwidth. (iii) General array geometries may be used. The tradeoff between picture quality and bandwidth usage is a prominent issue in the world of broadcasting. Since broadcasters are able to transmit multiple streams simultaneously in a channel, they face the challenge of guaranteeing the contracted picture quality required by each of the transmitted video streams while maximizing the number of video streams carried in each channel. We have developed an easy to implement MPEG-2 based multi-program video coding system suitable for digital TV broadcast, video on demand, and high definition TV over broadcast satellite networks with limited bandwidth. Compared to present broadcast systems and for the same level of contracted picture quality, our system greatly increases the number of video streams transmitted in each channel. As a result, either a large number of transponders can be freed to carry real-time broadcasting or the level of picture quality can be significantly increased. By switching from tape storage to video server technology, the need for numerous playback (VTR) systems at the headend is eliminated. In addition, the most of the complete MPEG-2 encoders are replaced by much less complex MPEG-2 transcoders. All this means a much more cost-effective solution for broadcast stations. 相似文献

The drawing behaviour of several syndiotactic polypropylenes is examined as a function of molecular weight and initial morphology. It is found that these materials can be drawn to a much lesser extent than comparable isotactic polypropylene. This limited drawability is attributed to the absence of an effective crystallinec-slip process, a view supported by dynamic mechanical measurements. Highest draw ratios are achieved in gel spun high molecular weight material where the degree of molecular entanglement is low enough to suppress the undesirable increase in drawing stress with extension. 相似文献

The product of the vaccinia virus I1 gene was characterized biochemically and genetically. This 35-kDa protein is conserved in diverse members of the poxvirus family but shows no homology to nonviral proteins. We show that recombinant I1 binds to both single-stranded and double-stranded DNA in a sequence-nonspecific manner in an electrophoretic mobility shift assay. The protein is expressed at late times during infection, and approximately 700 copies are encapsidated within the virion core. To determine the role of the I1 protein during the viral life cycle, a inducible viral recombinant in which the I1 gene was placed under the regulation of the Escherichia coli lac operator/repressor was constructed. In the absence of isopropyl-beta-D-thiogalactopyranoside, plaque formation was abolished and yields of infectious, intracellular virus were dramatically reduced. Although all phases of gene expression and DNA replication proceeded normally during nonpermissive infections, no mature virions were produced. Electron microscopic analysis confirmed the absence of mature virion assembly but revealed that apparently normal immature virions accumulated. Thus, I1 is an encapsidated DNA-binding protein required for the latest stages of vaccinia virion morphogenesis. 相似文献

Recombinant DNA technology has made possible the localization and isolation of disease-related genes, the tracking of disease-related alleles through family pedigrees, the direct detection of the pathological lesion itself and the in vitro expression of both normal and mutant genetic information at the mRNA and protein levels. Undoubtedly the most immediate practical spin-off from recombinant DNA technology in medical genetics has been in the sphere of improved disease diagnosis and prediction, where advances have been dramatic. We review the nature of inherited disease, current approaches to its analysis, diagnosis and prediction, mechanisms of gene mutation and the available techniques for mutation detection. Also examined are the various genetic factors that can alter the relationship between genotype and clinical phenotype. Finally, the genetics of selected adult-onset disorders are explored in the context of considering the accuracy and reliability of disease prediction. 相似文献
