Anti-atherosclerotic properties of higher mushrooms (a clinico-experimental investigation)

Antiatherosclerotic properties of water and alcoholic extracts of 20 types of high-species mushrooms were investigated by evaluation of intracellular cholesterol accumulation and 3H-thymidine inclusion into the cells of the human aortal intima in culture. The influence of a single intake of some mushroom species on antiatherosclerotic properties of the human sera was studied. It has been shown that Ganoderma lucidum and Lentinus edodes possess pronounced antiatherosclerotic properties.     

Consideration of building construction when calculating foundation settlements and coefficients of subgrade reaction of bed

A procedure is described for consideration of the construction of a building when analyzing the interaction between its foundation and soil bed by the finite-element method. Results of calculations, which illustrate the effect of the character of load transfer onto the foundation slab and the stiffness of a high-rise building on its settlement and the coefficient of subgrade reaction of the soil bed, are cited. __________ Translated from Osnovaniya, Fundamenty i Mekhanika Gruntov, No. 4, pp. 2–4, July–August, 2007.     

Biodegradable, oriented, flat starch-filled polypropylene fibres

It was found that PP filled with chemically modified starch is suitable for spinning biodegradable, oriented, high-strength flat fibres with elevated performance properties (tensile strength, water absorption, biodegradability) and woven packaging containers made from them. The structure of the composite fibres is perfected by improving the process compatibility of the binder and starch particles due to intensification of the physicochemical and the occurrence of chemical reactions on the phase boundaries. The use of such polymeric materials and fibres in the packaging industry will facilitate solving a pressing environmental problem in textile materials science — utilization of wastes from fibres made of synthetic polymers. __________ Translated from Khimicheskie Volokna, No. 5, pp. 26–30, September–October, 2006.     

Mathematical model of the regenerator of a catalytic cracker unit

Conclusions It has been shown that the mathematical model worked out for an industrial regenerator yields satisfactory agreement between the calculated and experimental data on the coke content of the catalyst, the oxygen content in the gas, and the temperatures in the various cross-sections of the regenerator.The best value of the preexponential factor of the regeneration rate constant in an industrial apparatus has been determined.Translated from Khimiya i Tekhnologiya Topliv i Masel, No. 8, pp. 41–43, August, 1967.     

Novel Models of Crohn’s Disease Pathogenesis Associated with the Occurrence of Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Intestinal Cells

Crohn’s disease remains one of the challenging problems of modern medicine, and the development of new and effective and safer treatments against it is a dynamic field of research. To make such developments possible, it is important to understand the pathologic processes underlying the onset and progression of Crohn’s disease at the molecular and cellular levels. During the recent years, the involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction and associated chronic inflammation in these processes became evident. In this review, we discuss the published works on pathogenetic models of Crohn’s disease. These models make studying the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the disease pathogenesis possible and advances the development of novel therapies.     

Direct anti-atherosclerosis-related effects of garlic

Leydig cell tumors are very rarely seen testicular tumors and can be difficult to distinguish from testicular tumors of the adrenogenital syndrome. Testicular tumors of the adrenogenital syndrome are confined to patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The authors report a case of a patient with malignant Leydig cell tumor and a history of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (adrenogenital syndrome). To the authors' knowledge, this has not been reported previously.
