A technique based on infra-red microdensitometry has been developed for studying the centre-of-mass translational diffusion of large additive molecules in polymeric matrices. In this technique the diffusion broadening with time of a known initial concentration profile of the additive within the bulk polymer is monitored. The shape of the concentration profile after diffusion broadening readily yields D, the diffusion constant; it may also yield the concentration dependence of D where this is significant. The technique is found to be reasonably flexible, and applicable to a number of polymer—additive combinations. Values of D in the range 10?5 to 10?10 cm2/sec and initial additive concentrations of down to 0.3% may be studied. The technique is viable over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. Some results obtained by this technique are presented, for the case of various linear long-chain amides diffusing in low density polyethylene. 相似文献

In the context of industrial buildings and power plants, electrical installations and cable trays represent a main fuel load and a potential initial fire source due to possible short circuits or comparable malfunction. Furthermore, a fire can spread from one tray to additional trays mounted above and/or horizontally on one tray. Because of the high significance of cable fires, several research projects have been carried out, investigating the fire behaviour of cables from small‐scale tests, eg, the cone calorimeter, up to large‐scale tests, analysing complete cable tray constructions. The goal of the work presented in this paper is the extension of the knowledge regarding the influence of geometrical parameters like the packing density and tray distance on the burning behaviour and fire spread of cable tray installations. The results are considered, together with test results from the literature, to quantify the main physical parameters describing the burning behaviour. In a next step, the general applicability of these parameters as input data for the parametrization of the source term of numerical simulations is shown. The test results show that the burning behaviour and the fire spreading highly depend on the cable arrangement of the cables on the cable tray, in combination with other boundary conditions. By applying the results as input for a fire simulation, the mass loss rate is considered appropriately. 相似文献

Submicron polystyrene (PS) latex particles were used as seed in seeded dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) to investigate the particle nucleation and aggregation behavior in this type of polymerization. The PS seed particles were located and tracked during the reaction using a refractive index matching technique. The number of PS seed particles present in the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles was investigated in detail throughout the reaction. The change in the distribution of PMMA particle populations containing different numbers of seed particles indicated that intensive nucleation and aggregation occurred during the early stage of the reaction until a transition point of 8.7% conversion was attained under the reaction conditions studied. The size of the large particles at this point was around 1 μm. These particles were regarded as mature particles that did not aggregate with other mature particles. Meanwhile, immature particle were still generated continuously from the continuous phase. These immature particles could not survive the aggregation process to grow to become mature particle, but instead, were captured by the mature particles. The Mode I interlaminar fracture behavior of woven carbon fiber/epoxy composite laminates incorporating partially cured carbon nanotube/epoxy composite films has been investigated. Laminates with films containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the as‐received state and functionalized with polyamidoamine were evaluated, as well as laminates with neat epoxy films. Double‐cantilever beam (DCB) specimens were used to measure GIc, the critical strain energy release rate (fracture toughness) versus crack length. Post‐fracture microscopic inspection of the fracture surfaces was performed. Results show that initial fracture toughness was improved with the amino‐functionalized CNT/epoxy interleaf films, but the important factor appears to be the polyamidoamine functionalization, not the CNTs. The initial fracture toughness remained relatively unaffected with the incorporation of neat epoxy and as‐received CNT/epoxy interleaf films. Plateau fracture toughness was unchanged with the use of functionalized CNT/epoxy interleaf films, and was reduced with the use of neat epoxy and as‐received CNT/epoxy interleaf films. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Permanent magnet dc motors have found many successful applications in industry. In particular, the machine tool industry utilizes the major share of all the permanent magnet motors produced. These motors typically exhibit greater stability of operation, linearity, higher maximum speeds, straightforward design, and higher efficiency. The applications to which these motors are addressed, however, impose fairly sophisticated design choices to maintain high performance along with optimization of unit design. In trying to optimize motor design without loss of performance, the selection of magnet material has the greatest impact upon eventual motor performance, size, and cost. The criteria for selection of permanent magnet material are reviewed, and the major advantages to using this type of motor in comparison with a wound field dc motor are specified. 相似文献

Isotropic and anisotropic shape-memory polymer foams are prepared by supercritical carbon dioxide foaming from a multiblock copolymer (PDLCL) consisting of poly(ω-pentadecalactone) and poly(ε-caprolactone) segments. Analysis by micro-computed tomography reveals for the anisotropic PDLCL foam cells a high shape anisotropy ratio of R = 1.72 ± 0.62 with a corresponding Young's compression moduli ratio between longitudinal and transversal direction of 4.3. The experimental compression data in the linear elastic range can be well described by the anisotropic open foam model of Gibson and Ashby. A micro-morphological analysis for single pores using scanning electron microscopy images permits the correlation between the macroscopic stress-compression behavior and microscale structural changes. 相似文献

Water-borne two-pack coatings based on a novel epoxy resin emulsion, cross-linked with three different amine group containing curing agents, are discussed. The aqueous binders developed at the Research Laboratory at Dow Deutschland Inc. are free of volatile organic content. The epoxy resin emulsion has a low MFFT (minimum film formation temperature) and is hence capable of forming a continuous film at low temperatures and good emulsifying properties. The interaction is discussed between the epoxy emulsion, pigments and hardeners which are in aqueous solution, emulsion or hydrophobic (non-aqueous) form. Some of the described systems will gain interest in a wide range of applications because of their excellent properties, including adhesion to various substrates, resistance to chemicals, solvents and water, hardness and toughness. The predicted major applications for such systems include concrete, plastic and wood coatings, and anti-corrosive systems for steel and other metals. 相似文献

We aim to show the existence of agglomeration by measuring and modelling secondary nucleation and crystal growth rates of calcium sulphate hemihydrate, CaSO4-0.5 H2O, in concentrated phosphoric acid solutions. Using a batch crystallizer we measured the evolution of the population density as a function of supersaturation, H2SO4 excess and stirring rates. All experiments were carried out at 90 °C in solutions at 40 wt.% of P2O5, simulating the usual conditions for crystallizing hemihydrate in the industrial processes of phosphoric acid production. Nucleation and growth rates were calculated from the population number densities, using the moments analysis method. A model is presented for describing the crystallization process of hemihydrate. It is shown that secondary nucleation and growth rates are quadratic functions of supersaturation. H2SO4 concentrations affect supersaturation but at the same supersaturation the growth rates are not significantly different. Nucleation is independent of the stirring rate, whereas growth rates are slightly affected for stirring rates up to 500 rpm. Taking agglomeration into account, the moments method fits very well the experimental data. 相似文献

The wettability of granular materials has a direct effect on the workability of pastes, mortars and concretes containing such materials. Given this, the wetting behaviour of two Portland cements, two mineral admixtures (limestone filler and silica fume) and different sand types (siliceous, limestone and granite) was evaluated through the measurement of the contact angle between these materials and water. The results show that all the materials possess high wettability. A chemical agent, dichlorodimethylsilane, was used to modify the surface properties of a 0–1 mm siliceous sand, making it more hydrophobic and, therefore, unable to be spontaneously wetted by water. The properties of a mortar produced with the silane-treated sand were evaluated, showing improvements on workability as a result of the chemical treatment. 相似文献
