Comparative analysis of some anthropometric measurements

The main objective of this work is to determine what anthropometric method to use under field conditions, given the kind of mainutrition to be detected. In the first part of the work some criteria and procedures are given by which to compare the field perfomance characteristics (i.e. transportability, facility of use, etc.), of the most commonly used instruments. Then we extrapolate these characteristics to the respective methods like weight for age, weight for height, height for age, etc. In the second part we present a correlation matrix among the various methods and analyze it in order to associate with each method a specific typology of malnutrition.

Dynamics of the slider-crank mechanism with clearance in the sliding bearingÜber die dynamik des schubkurbelgetriebes mit lagerspiel in der kreuzkopffuhrung

A method of predicting the detailed motion of the slider of a slider crank mechanism within slider-guide clearance is given. The effects of changing the geometry and the mass distribution are presented, and the analysis, which includes the effects of gas loads on the slider, is applied to the motion of a piston in a diesel engine.     

Effect of skin or muscle incisions or the loss of blood on serum leucogenenol level

It has been found that damage to a tissue of a rabbit or a rat, such as results from a skin incision or an incision through the skin and muscles into the abdominal cavity, is followed 24 hr later by a significant increase in the concentration of leucogenenol in the animal's serum. Likewise, loss of approximately one-quarter to one-half of the blood in the circulation of rabbits or rats causes an increase 24 hr later in the animals' serum leucogenenol concentration.     

Sulphure in epidermal keratohyalin granules: a quantitative assay by x-ray microanalysis

The elemental composition of different types of keratohyalin granules from the epidermis of newborn and adult rats was studied by means of an EMMA-4 analytical electron microscope, equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer. An absolute quantitation of the sulphur concentration in keratohyalin granules was performed. The results demonstrate that epidermal keratohyalin granules are chemically heterogeneous. A type of keratohyalin granule present in the nuclei and cytoplasm of epidermal cells from both newborn and adult rats - termed single granules - is rich in sulphur, having a content of 2-5-3-6%. Other types of keratohyalin granules, which differ in newborn and adult rats, contain a sulphur-poor component; they often have a sulphur-rich component as well. The sulphur-poor keratohyalin contains 0-6-0-9% sulphur. It is suggested that the sulphur-rich keratohyalin granules are the source of the peripheral envelope protein of cornified cells.     

Effects of level of cooperative choice by the other player on choices in a prisoner's dilemma game. Part II.

This study tests whether very high (or very low) cooperation by the other, sequential change in level of cooperation by the other, and degree of S's "flexible ethicality" will influence level of cooperative choice by 40 male and 40 female human Ss. The design is a mixed analysis of variance type with 3 independent and 2 nonindependent sources of variance. The main findings were that cooperative choice is influenced by a very high level of cooperation by the other, but even more by a sequence of low to high cooperation by the other. Flexible ethicality influences choice but in a complex association with sex and sequence. Essentially, then, communication is possible through reiteration of the Prisoner's Dilemma game. High Stability of Thin-Film Triodes to Nuclear-Reactor Radiation

Two thin-film triodes., fabricated by successive vacuum deposition of metal electrodes, a semiconductor, an insulator, and a gate electrode, and which exhibit good amplifying characteristics, were exposed to steady-state reactor radiation. Samples protected by a glass cover plate during irradiation survived reactor doses of 1.3 × 1016 n/cm2 (E > 0.3 Mev) and 2.4 × 1010 ergs/gm (C) without degradation. Stability in high-energy radiation environments may be attributed to polycrystallinity, conduction by majority carriers, and thinness of the thin-film devices. These results of steady-state irradiation substantiate previous indications from transient radiation tests which showed thin-film active and passive devices to be more stable than single-crystal devices by two to three orders of magnitude.
