A statistical reference for RNA secondary structures with minimum free energies is computed by folding large ensembles of random RNA sequences. Four nucleotide alphabets are used: two binary alphabets, AU and GC, the biophysical AUGC and the synthetic GCXK alphabet. RNA secondary structures are made of structural elements, such as stacks, loops, joints, and free ends. Statistical properties of these elements are computed for small RNA molecules of chain lengths up to 100. The results of RNA structure statistics depend strongly on the particular alphabet chosen. The statistical reference is compared with the data derived from natural RNA molecules with similar base frequencies. Secondary structures are represented as trees. Tree editing provides a quantitative measure for the distance dt, between two structures. We compute a structure density surface as the conditional probability of two structures having distance t given that their sequences have distance h. This surface indicates that the vast majority of possible minimum free energy secondary structures occur within a fairly small neighborhood of any typical (random) sequence. Correlation lengths for secondary structures in their tree representations are computed from probability densities. They are appropriate measures for the complexity of the sequence-structure relation. The correlation length also provides a quantitative estimate for the mean sensitivity of structures to point mutations. 相似文献

Of 605 hyperprolactinaemic sera (prolactin > 1000 mU l-1 determined with PRL DELFIA, Wallac) in the routine diagnostic (PRL was measured in 10,737 sera) 26% had an increased amount of PRL with molecular weight (MW) = 150-170 kD (150-170 kD PRL or bigbig PRL). In a series of serum samples from 660 healthy subjects, only one female with hyperprolactinaemia due to increased 150-170 kD PRL was found. The 150-170 kD PRL constituted less than 1% of the total PRL found in 11 patients with prolactinoma (macroprolactinoma, PRL 8800-500,000 mU l-1). When determined with five different commercially available immunometric assays, the PRL values in the sera with large amounts of 150-170 kD were increased in all sera in four of five assays, although they varied widely. The clinical implications of hyperprolactinaemia due to increased 150-170 kD PRL are still uncertain. 相似文献

We compared three methods of analysis for IgG in cerebrospinal fluid, using samples from 158 patients with clinically suspected multiple sclerosis and from 200 neurological controls. The tests were: search for oligoclonal bands, calculation of rate of synthesis of IgG in the cerebrospinal fluid, and determination of the IgG/albumin ratio. Paired cerebrospinal fluid and serum samples were collected and their IgG and albumin concentrations measured. Oligoclonal bands were detected by electrophoresis on agarose. Positive results were obtained in 94, 75, and 67% of patients with probable or definite multiple sclerosis by the three respective methods. In contrast, for patients for whom the clinical diagnosis of multiple sclerosis was considered possible, positive results were obtained in 10, 43, and 13%, respectively. Evidently, detection of oligoclonal bands remains the best single test for the presence of abnormal IgG in suspected multiple sclerosis patients. A combination of the first two tests is most sensitive for both probable and definite multiple sclerosis (97%) and possible multiple sclerosis (50%). Some infectious or immunologic disorders can also produce these IgG abnormalities, but they can usually be distinguished from multiple sclerosis by other clinical and laboratory data. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Predicting postrepair right ventricular/left ventricular pressure ratio has prognostic relevance for patients undergoing total repair of pulmonary atresia, ventricular septal defect, and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries. To this purpose, we currently rely on 2 novel parameters: (1) preoperative total neopulmonary arterial index and (2) mean pulmonary artery pressure changes during an intraoperative flow study. METHODS: Since January 1994, 15 consecutive patients (aged 64 +/- 54 months) with pulmonary atresia, ventricular septal defect, and major aortopulmonary collaterals were managed according to total neopulmonary arterial index. Seven patients with hypoplastic pulmonary arteries and a total neopulmonary arterial index less than 150 mm(2)/m(2) underwent palliative right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction followed by secondary 1-stage unifocalization and ventricular septal defect closure. The other 8 patients with a preoperative index of more than 150 mm(2)/m(2) underwent primary single-stage unifocalization and repair. The ventricular septal defect was closed in all cases (reopened in 1). In 9, such decision was based on an intraoperative flow study. RESULTS: Patients treated by right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction had a significant increase of pulmonary artery index (P=.006) within 22 +/- 6 months. Repair was successful in 14 cases (postrepair right ventricular/left ventricular pressure ratio = 0.47 +/- 0.1). One hospital death occurred as a result of pulmonary vascular obstructive disease, despite a reassuring intraoperative flow study. Accuracy of this test in predicting the postrepair mean pulmonary artery pressure was 89% (95% CI: 51%-99%). At follow-up (18 +/- 12 months), all patients are free of symptoms, requiring no medications. CONCLUSIONS: The integrated approach to total repair of pulmonary atresia, ventricular septal defect, and major aortopulmonary collaterals by preoperative calculation of total neopulmonary arterial index, right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction (when required), and intraoperative flow study may lead to optimal intermediate results. 相似文献

Cercopithecus, the genus of guenons, is the largest of the African primate genera, and yet more than half of the species belonging to this group have never been the focus of a long-term field study. In this paper, I present data on group size and composition for a previously unstudied population of guenons on the Caribbean island of Grenada. The mona monkey, Cercopithecus mona, was introduced to Grenada from Africa approximately 200-300 years ago. Two types of social groups were found for Cercopithecus mona on Grenada: all-male groups consisting of two to four individuals and bisexual groups containing 5-32 individuals. All-male groups of Grenada mona monkeys contained any combination of juveniles, subadults, and/or adults. All-male groups were a common occurrence on Grenada but have never been reported for African C. mona and have been reported only in two other forest Cercopithecus species. Bisexual groups appeared to consist of one adult male, one to six adult females, subadult females, and juveniles and infants of both sexes. Even though no more than one adult male was ever seen in each bisexual group of monas on Grenada, other males were heard giving copulation calls simultaneously with resident adult male loud calls, suggesting that other males occasionally infiltrate bisexual groups. 相似文献

A background self-calibration technique is proposed that can correct both linear and nonlinear errors in the interstage amplifiers of pipeline and algorithmic analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Stage redundancy in a pipeline architecture is exploited to measure gain errors that are corrected using digital post-processing. The proposed technique allows faster convergence and has less dependence on input signal statistics than a similar technique described by Murmann and Boser. Simulation results are presented for a 12-bit pipelined ADC architecture, similar to that described by Murmann and Boser, using nonideal interstage residue amplifiers. With calibration, the simulations show a signal-to-noise-and-distortion-ratio performance of 72 dB and a spurious-free dynamic range performance of 112 dB, with calibration tracking time constants of approximately 8/spl times/10/sup 5/ sample periods, which is over ten times faster than that reported by Murmann and Boser at a similar performance level. 相似文献

SUBJECT: We analysed the periprosthetic bone mineral density (BMD) in a prospective longitudinal study over two years after operation and in a separate cross-sectional study more than five years after implantation of cementless total hip arthroplasty (CLS-stem, Mecron threaded acetabular cup) by using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In n = 53 patients (29 women, 24 men) we analysed the periprosthetic BMD prospectively in certain periods. All patients had an uncomplicated postoperative course and good clinical outcome (Merle d'Aubigne score > 12). In the cross-sectional study we analysed 23 patients (13 women, 10 men). Regions of Interest (ROI) were defined according to Gruen et al. for the periprosthetic femur and to De Lee and Charnley for the periprosthetic acetabulum. RESULTS: BMD significantly decreases in the periprosthetic femur as well as in the periprosthetic acetabulum during the first three months. In men BMD reaches its lowest values between six months (femur) and one year (acetabulum) after operation and then increases to 96.2% at the femur and 93.8% at the acetabulum. In women BMD decreases during the entire follow-up to 89.4% at the periprosthetic femur and 80.0% at the periprosthetic acetabulum. In the proximal zones 1 and 7 of the femur and the cranial-medial zone II of the acetabulum we observed the highest decrease of mineralisation. More than five years after implantation of the prosthesis BMD in the femur showed only little changes. On the other side BMD around the threaded acetabular cup significantly decreased to 67.4% in women and 79.1% in men. CONCLUSION: The results reflect the different stress on the periprosthetic bone after implantation of the prosthesis and fit to earlier reported good clinical results of the CLS-stem and to increased loosening rate of threaded acetabular cups after five years. Analysing changes of mineralisation in cementless total hip arthroplasty DEXA together with the analization scheme according to Gruen at the femur and to De Lee and Charnley at the acetabulum is a useful method and has been reliable in clinical practise. 相似文献

Aspergillus oryzae, Mucor mucedo, and Phycomyces blakesleeanus cultures were examined as sources of chitin/chitosan. The nitrogen content of the alkali-treated mycelia/sporangiophores of A. oryzae, M. mucedo, and P. blakesleeanus was 2.52, 3.61, and 6.27% w/w, which relates to an estimated chitin content of 37, 52, and 91%, respectively. The effect of these fungal materials on the rate of proliferation of human F1000 fibroblasts in culture was examined. At 0.01% w/v, all three materials exhibited significant (P < .05) proproliferant activity over a period of 13 days. However, at 0.05% w/v, P. blakesleeanus further enhanced cell proliferation, whereas A. oryzae and M. mucedo produced a significant (P < .05) antiproliferant effect. Higher concentrations of P. blakesleeanus (0.1 and 0.5%) caused marked inhibition of F1000 cell proliferation when measured on days 3 and 6. Only the proproliferant effect of these fungal materials appears to correlate to their chitin content. Furthermore, the cytomorphology of the fibroblasts indicated that P. blakesleeanus, and to a lesser extent M. mucedo, possessed cell attractant properties, again correlating with chitin content. If developed for use as wound management materials, the sporangiophores of P. blakesleeanus and the mycelium of M. mucedo could possibly promote the growth of fibroblasts and provide a matrix for their anchorage, thus contributing to the granulation phase of the healing cascade. 相似文献
