The -514 polymorphism in the hepatic lipase gene (LIPC) is associated with decreased hepatic lipase activity. In the present study, the interaction between body mass index (BMI), the -514 polymorphism, and hepatic lipase activity was examined in 118 white men and in 51 African American men. BMI was significantly positively correlated with hepatic lipase activity in both populations. BMI was similar in men with genetic differences in hepatic lipase activity, indicating that high hepatic lipase activity did not cause increased BMI. The data therefore suggest that high BMI leads to increased hepatic lipase activity. The actions of BMI and the -514 polymorphism on hepatic lipase activity appear to be additive and independent, rather than synergistic. This finding indicates that hepatic lipase activity is a multifactorial trait, determined in part by polymorphism within the LIPC gene as well as by factors that influence BMI. 相似文献

This paper presents a model reference adaptive control scheme for deterministic continuous-time multivariable systems represented by square, strictly proper, minimum-phase transfer function matrices. A typical requirement of existing algorithms is to assume that the zero structure at infinity and the high-frequency gain matrix are fully (or at least partially) known. It is well known that these requirements may be very restrictive, since, in general, both the zero structure at infinity and the high-frequency gain matrix depend on plant parameters. In this paper we show that these restrictive assumptions may be considerably weakened using Morse et al.'s hysteresis switching control strategy (1992). The strategy entails running a finite number of parameter estimators in parallel and using a switching algorithm to select between candidate estimators based on their associated prediction errors. Hysteresis in the switching algorithm precludes switching arbitrarily rapidly between estimators, and all switching ceases within a finite time. Flash pyrolysis/gas chromatography (py/GC) and py/GC/mass spectrometry (MS) have been utilized to characterize the cuticles of invertebrates chemically. Pyrolysis products have been identified and assigned to specific cuticular components. Acetylpyridones, acetamidofuran, 3-acetamido-5-methylfuran and 3-acetamido-(2 and 4)-pyrones are proposed as characteristic pyrolysis markers for chitin. Pyrolysis products displaying ions of m/z 70, 154, 168, 194 are thought to derive from diketopiperazine structures and provide potential markers for proteins and peptides in which proline, alanine, valine, arginine and glycine are the dominant amino acids. These products, constituting specific pyrolysis markers for invertebrate cuticles, may reflect the amino acid composition of their constituent structural proteins. The source of the various pyrolysis products of proteins has been verified by pyrolysis of reference proteins, peptides and amino acid mixtures. The presence of additional pyrolysis products related directly to histidine and catechol moieties is consistent with the chemical structure and composition proposed for arthropod cuticles based on recent work utilizing solid state 13C and 15N nuclear magnetic resonance. This study constitutes the first comprehensive chemical characterization of the pyrolysis products of invertebrate cuticles and provides the basis for future investigations requiring qualitative screening for cross-linked chitin and proteins in modern and fossil cuticles and in materials, e.g. geopolymers, that may be derived from them. 相似文献

The concentrations of angiotensin I (AI) and II (AII) were determined by radioimmunoassay in blood from the main pulmonary artery (MPA) and left ventricule (LV) of ten subjects with rheumatic valvular heart disease. The levels of AI were consistently higher in MPA plasma (21.8+/-2.4 pmol/1) than in LV plasma (14.7+/-2.0 pmol/1), paired t, P less than 0.001. The levels of AII were consistently lower in MPA plasma (21.8+/-4.7 pmol/1) than in LV plasma (33.8+/-7.2 pmol/1), paired t, P less than 0.001. The AII antiserum cross-reacted with three metabolites of the hormone, [des-Asp1]angiotensin II, [des-(Asp1, Arg2)angiotensin II [des-(Asp1, Arg2 Val,3]angiotensin II. To characterize the nature of circulating AII immunoreactive material, paper chromatography was used to separate AII from its immunoreactive metabolites. The results showed that 84-100% of the AII immunoreactive material from both MPA and LV plasma chromatographed with the mobility of authentic angiotensin II. The mean pulmonary conversion of endogenous AI was 33+/-4.8% and the net extraction of AII by peripheral tissues was 33+/-4.1%. 相似文献

The described in vitro test system for allergy diagnosis is based on microscope glass slides activated with (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane. Allergen solutions are immobilized as small droplets (approximately 10 nL) on the activated glass slides with a piezoelectric arrayer. In contrast to other tests for specific IgE, such as Pharmacia CAP FEIA, AlaSTAT, or FAST, only a 25-microL serum sample is needed for the screening of allergen-specific IgE against a multitude of allergens and the test can be performed in less than 1 h. Compared with multiallergen dipstick screening tests (e.g., IgEquick, CMG Immunodot) based on multiallergen-coated nitrocellulose strips, the measurement of the microarray-based system can be performed automatically. The chemiluminescence intensities are detected with a sensitive CCD camera. Allergen extracts and recombinant/purified allergens (24 preparations) have been used on the same modified surface for the screening of allergen-specific IgE. With these disposable microarray slides, it is possible to distinguish between patients with and without elevated levels of allergen-specific IgE. We describe recent developments in the synthesis of semiconductor nanoparticles, which lead to a substantial improvement of the luminescence quantum efficiency. Concerning a theoretical model for the growth of an ensemble of nanoparticles, the highest quantum efficiencies are achieved in particles that grow under conditions of a rapid exchange of monomers at the particle surface, leading to a smooth surface structure. Selective etching, core-shell formation and doping of nanoparticles are also discussed as fluorescence-enhancing preparative techniques. Examples of self-assembly of almost-uniformly-sized nanoparticles are given, which result in two-dimensional and three-dimensional superlattices, colloidal crystals and crystalline structures built-up from particles of different sizes. Finally, the self-assembled oriented attachment of quasi-spherical ZnO nanoparticles onto single-crystalline nanorods is presented. 相似文献
