Afterload reduction in the management of postinfarction ventricular septal defect

The primary goal in the medical management of ventricular septal defect complicating myocardial infarction is to support cardiac function and control symptoms, if possible, for a period of 4 to 6 weeks. If the patient survives this period, surgical correction of the defect is technically easier and safer. In many cases, However, cardiac function is severly compromised, intractable biventricular failure develops,early operation is necessary and the likelihood of successful repair is diminished.     

Anorexia nervosa in children: a follow-up study

Thirty children seen between 1954 and 1970 with the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa were contacted between five and twenty years after initial treatment. Patients outcomes in terms of education, weight in adulthood, medical problems, marriage, psychiatric treatment, and recurrence of anorexia were surveyed. Results corroborate those of earlier studies suggesting that adjustment in adulthood is related to personality type.     

1.3-Dipolar cycloaddition products of 8-azidotetrazol[1,5a][1,8]naphthyridines with alkynes

A series of new 1,2,3-triazol derivatives, obtained by reaction of 8-azidotetrazol[1,5-a][1,8]naphthyridine with alkynes, is described. Some of the tested compounds showed activity against hypoxia in mice.     

Origin of contrast effects in the electron microscopy of polymers

When polyethylene single crystals are mounted on a substrate less rigid than the usual evaporated carbon, they undergo considerable dimensional changes in the electron beam. In particular, crystals mounted on collodion expand by 22±2% in every direction in the plane of the lamellae. No induction period is observed and the expansion continues after all crystalline order has been destroyed. Since irradiation increases the density of bulk polyethylene, it is presumed that the lamellae become thinner as they expand. A similar but lesser expansion occurs on irradiation in the electron microscope at liquid helium temperatures, and when crystals are mounted on formvar films. In a solution grown lamellar crystal of polyethylene, most of each molecule is straight and aligned along thec axis, which is nearly perpendicular to the plane of the lamella. Radiation damage in the electron microscope introduces disorder, and these results imply that the effect of this disorder is to reduce the mean molecular dimension alongc, and increase it in the plane perpendicular toc. Polymer chains are generally highly oriented in crystalline regions, so this qualitative explanation would imply similar effects in other systems. These effects have important implications for the contrast observed in the electron microscopy of polymers.
