Following the same general principles of its two predecessors in 1973 and 1986, the 1996 National Roadside Survey of weekend, nighttime drivers in the 48 contiguous states interviewed and breath tested over 6000 noncommercial four-wheel vehicle operators between September 6 and November 9, 1996. Results indicated that the total number of drinking drivers fell by about one-third between 1986 and 1996; however, there was no significant change in the number of drivers at blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) at or above 0.05. Compared to 1973, the proportion of women drivers on the roads during weekend nights has increased significantly. Moreover, relative to males, the proportion of female drivers who have been drinking has increased over the last decade. The number of drivers under the age of 21 with a BAC at or above 0.10 decreased significantly from 1986 to 1996.  相似文献

The topography of primary sensory cortical hand area following a monohemispheric lesion (sudden = stroke; progressive = neoplasm) was investigated in relationship with clinical recovery of sensorimotor deficits. Twenty seven patients with monohemispheric lesions were studied in a clinically stabilized condition. Functional informations from magnetoencephalography (MEG) were integrated with anatomical data from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MEG localizations of the neurons firing at early latencies in primary sensory cortex after separate stimulation of median nerve, thumb and little fingers of each hand were carried out. Characteristics of cerebral equivalent current dipoles (ECDs) activated by each contralateral stimulation, the 'hand extension' (i.e., the distance in millimetres between ECDs of first and fifth digits), as well as interhemispheric differences of the tested parameters were investigated. Finally, ECDs' locations were integrated with MRI. Lesions involving cortical (C) or subcortical (s.c.) areas receiving sensory input from the hand were often combined to increase interhemispheric asymmetry of the tested parameters (22% for C and 49% for s.c. lesions). This might be due to an activation of neuronal districts which in the affected hemisphere (AH) differ from those normally activated in the unaffected hemisphere (UH) and in the control population. Moreover, the 'hand extension' was enlarged on the AH--more frequently after a SC lesion--mainly due to a medial shift of the little finger ECD, combined to a tendency of both finger ECDs to shift frontally. After a C lesion, responses from the AH were often stronger than normal. Spatial reorganizations were also seen in the UH (7% of C and 14% of SC lesions). 'Hand extension' in the UH was selectively enlarged for the P30m only when combined with a similar enlargement in the AH. Significant interhemispheric asymmetries due to neuronal reorganization in the AH were associated with worse clinical outcomes compared to patients without asymmetries.  相似文献

Oxidation of catechol estrogens (CE) leads to the reactive electrophilic CE quinones. Reaction of CE-3,4-quinones with DNA has been implicated in tumor initiation. One pathway to prevent this reaction is conjugation of CE quinones with glutathione (GSH). Four CE, 4-hydroxy estrone (4-OHE1), 4-hydroxyestradiol (4-OHE2), 2-OHE1, and 2-OHE2, were conjugated with GSH after oxidation catalyzed by horseradish peroxidase (HRP), lactoperoxidase (LP), or rat liver microsomal cytochrome P450. This reaction is a free-radical chain autoxidation that produces very high yields of products. Six mono-GSH conjugates, 4-OHE1(E2)-2-SG, 2-OHE1(E2)-1-SG, and 2-OHE1(E2)-4-SG, and four di-GSH conjugates, 4-OHE1(E2)-1,2-bisSG and 2-OHE1(E2)-1,4-bisSG, were identified and quantified. These di-GSH conjugates were also obtained quantitatively from oxidation of mono-GSH conjugates by the same enzymes. HRP and LP gave very similar product profiles. Phenobarbital- and 3-methylcholanthrene-induced microsomes with either NADPH or cumene hydroperoxide as cofactor oxidized 4-OHE2 to form similar amounts of GSH conjugates. Enzymatic oxidation of 2-OHE1(E2) in the presence of GSH produced more 2-OHE1(E2)-4-SG than the 1-isomer. This contrasts with the direct reaction of E1(E2)-2,3-Q and GSH, in which the 1-isomer is formed more abundantly than the 4-isomer (Cao, K., Devanesan, P. D., Ramanathan, R., Gross, M. L., Rogan, E. G., and Cavalieri, E. L. (1998) Chem. Res. Toxicol. 11, 909-916). Competitive enzymatic oxidation of equimolar 4-OHE2 and 2-OHE2 in the presence of an equimolar amount of GSH yielded more 2-OHE2 conjugates than 4-OHE2 conjugates, despite E2-3,4-Q being more reactive with GSH than E2-2,3-Q. These results suggest that 2-OHE2 is a better substrate than 4-OHE2 in the catalytic oxidation to quinones, despite the greater reactivity of E2-3,4-Q, compared to E2-2,3-Q, with GSH.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of complex radiation diagnosis of 118 cases of retroperitoneal tumors and tumor-like states, including 71 patients with tumors of mesenchymal origin, 7 with those of neurogenic origin, 6 with cysts, 9 with lymphogranulomatosis, 8 with retroperitoneal fibrosis, 12 with metastases, and 5 with hematomas. A wide complex of routine and up-to-date high-technology radiation diagnostic techniques was used to study the patients. The authors show the merits and dismerits of each technique. Greatest attention is given to the assessment of current techniques, primarily to ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT). The studies have indicated that despite some specific features, many retroperitoneal tumors and tumor-like states bear similarities when various radiation methods are employed. The authors describe some syndromes which can be used to make a diagnosis. Despite the high capacities of US and CT in studying the normal and pathological structures of the human body, there are still great difficulties in differentiating different abnormalities when even the latest techniques are applied, these cases need paracentic aspiration or open biopsy.  相似文献
