A comparison between a family of isoparametric C°-continucus elements in the context of two-dimensional elastostatics using the direct boundary element method is presented. The elements studied use Lagrangian shape functions of orders quadratic, cubic and quartic. The relative efficiencies of these elements from the viewpoint of accuracy of solution as well as cost effectiveness are examined through certain selected problems. It emerges from the present study that the quartic element is more reliable in accuracy than the lower members of the family without being necessarily more expensive.  相似文献

The mechanisms responsible for somatostatin (SRIF)-induced increases in intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and subsequent desensitisation were studied in CHO-K1 cells expressing human sst5 receptors (CHOsst5 cells). To study the nature of the desensitisation, interactions with uridine triphosphate (UTP) were examined. SRIF (pEC50 7.10) and UTP (pEC50) 5.14) caused concentration-dependent increases in [Ca2+]i but the SRIF maximum was about 40% of that to UTP. SRIF-, but not UTP-, induced increases in [Ca2+]i were transient and abolished by pertussis toxin. SRIF and UTP caused sustained increases in Ins(1,4,5)P3 but the SRIF maximum was about 30% of that to UTP. Removal of [Ca2+]e attenuated the SRIF-induced peak rise in [Ca2+]i but had no effect on the peak increases in Ins(1,4,5)P3. UTP-induced increases in [Ca2+]i and Ins(1,4,5)P3 were attenuated in the absence of [Ca2+]e. Following pre-exposure to SRIF (1 microM) or UTP (100 microM) for 5 min, subsequent SRIF responses were desensitised. Similar results were obtained in the absence of [Ca2+]e. Pre-exposure to SRIF had no effect on subsequent responses to UTP but in the absence of [Ca2+]e, responses to UTP were attenuated. The results suggest that SRIF but not UTP-induced increases in [Ca2+]i in CHOsst5 cells are mediated by pertussis toxin sensitive G proteins and are caused by an entry of extracellular Ca2+ and release from an Ins(1,4,5)P3 sensitive Ca2+ store. Homologous or heterologous desensitisation of agonist-induced increases in [Ca2+]i could be demonstrated in the presence or absence of extracellular Ca2+ respectively, and the latter appeared to involve depletion of a common intracellular Ca2+ store.  相似文献

Using the curve shift method, we assessed the effects of ventromedial mesencephalic tegmental (VMT) microinjections of an equimolar concentration of neurotensin-(1-13) (NT-(1-13)) and of its C-terminal fragment, neurotensin-(8-13) (NT-(8-13)), on operant responding for rewarding electrical stimulation of the caudal mesencephalic central gray. The effects of NT-(1-13) and NT-(8-13) on brain stimulation reward (BSR) were also compared to those of systemically administered quinpirole (0.1 and 0.2 mg/kg, s.c.), a direct dopamine agonist, and GBR-12909 (10 and 20 mg/kg, i.p.), a selective dopamine uptake blocker. At the concentration injected, NT-(8-13) was as effective as NT-(1-13) at facilitating BSR, producing significant leftward shifts of the function relating the rate of responding to the stimulation frequency (R/F function); neither form of the peptide was effective when injected in regions dorsal to the VMT. Similarly, GBR-12909 produced a parallel leftward shift of the R/F function, but, unlike NT-(1-13), also significantly increased the asymptotic rates of responding. In contrast, the high dose of quinpirole produced non-parallel leftward shifts of the R/F function and suppressed the asymptote. The similarity between the effects of neurotensin and GBR-12909 on one hand, and the differences between those of neurotensin and quinpirole on the other, suggest that activation VMT neurotensin receptors potentiate BSR by enhancing increases in dopamine neurotransmission that are contingent upon operant responding or rewarding brain stimulation, or both.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Mullite was developed by reaction sintering of sillimanite beach sand and calcined alumina. Two varieties of sillimanite beach sand viz. S and Z having different compositions were selected. Synthesis and properties of mullite were very much dependent on the sillimanite beach sand composition. Presence of higher amount of impurities in the Z-variety of sillimanite sand favours the densification by liquid phase formation. Presence of zircon in Z-variety increases the hardness and fracture toughness. Alumina addition improves the mechanical/thermomechanical properties of the samples. Mullite retains the usual orthorhombic habit of sillimanite. Rounded to sub rounded zirconia dispersed within the mullite matrix of the sample ZA is noticed.  相似文献

Flooding phenomenon limits the stability and the flow of a liquid film falling along the walls of a channel in which a gas is flowing upwards.As known, the entrainment effect can completely prevent the liquid to fall from its natural flow. The present work proposes a new mechanistic model for the prediction of the onset of flooding in vertical and inclined pipes in the presence of obstructions, as well as taking into account the viscosity effect. The good performance of the model in the different geometrical conditions and for variable viscosities of the liquid component assesses the validity of the hypothesis that the instability of a wavelike disturbance limits the countercurrent flow in a channel.  相似文献

This paper exploits the potential of the Genetic Algorithm to solve the cellular resource allocation problem. When a blocked host is to be allocated to a borrowable channel, a crucial decision is which neighboring cell to choose to borrow a channel. It is an optimization problem and the genetic algorithm is efficiently applied to handle this. The Genetic Algorithm, for this particular problem, is improved by introducing a new genetic operator, named pluck, that incorporates a problem-specific knowledge in population generation and leads to a better channel utilization by reducing the average blocked hosts. The pluck operator makes the crucial decision of when and which cell to borrow with the future consideration that the borrowing should not lead the network to chaos. It makes a channel borrowing decision that minimizes the number of blocked hosts and improves the long-term performance of the network. Efficacy of the proposed method has been evaluated by experimentation.  相似文献

The tensile properties of jute make it a suitable raw material for asphalt overlay (A/O) fabric. In this study, the thermal stability of jute under conditions of asphalt overlaying process was investigated and the compatibility of jute with asphalt was assessed through experimentation on jute–asphalt composites under mechanical and hygral loads. Fourier transform infra red (FTIR) spectroscopic study revealed probable chemical bonding between jute and asphalt. The test for ascertaining the capability of asphalt encasement for protecting jute against biodegradation under enzymatic attack was found positive. A 6‐month hygral treatment, of the jute–asphalt composite, showed significant increase in modulus of the material. The results indicate that although the strength of jute deteriorates by about 10% under asphalt overlaying condition, the overall tensile behavior of jute fabric–asphalt composite material is considerably superior to that of the pure jute fabric, even under biological and extended hygral loading conditions. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study examined the prevalence, comorbidity, and clinical correlates of personality disorders in an outpatient sample (N = 352) with anxiety and depression. Subjects were diagnosed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID) on Axes I and II, and they also completed interview and self-report measures of symptoms. Subjects with a personality disorder were less likely to be married, more likely to be single or divorced, had lower family incomes, had more severe symptoms of both anxiety and depression, and had a greater number of lifetime Axis I diagnoses. Subjects with dysthymic and bipolar disorders were more likely, and subjects with panic disorder uncomplicated by agoraphobia were less likely to have a personality disorder compared to the rest of the sample. The most prevalent personality disorders were Avoidant, Obsessive-Compulsive, Paranoid, and Borderline. Paranoid co-occurred with Narcissistic, and Borderline co-occurred with Histrionic personality disorder significantly more often than chance and base rates would predict.  相似文献

There is agreement on the clinical diagnostic criteria for acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP/GBS) however, there is lack of consensus for detection of demyelination. In order to critically evaluate the prevailing criteria, sixty-six patients who fulfilled NINCDS criteria and had typical features of GBS were studied for electrophysiological abnormalities of peripheral nerves by using standard methods (median, common peroneal, sural and ulnar) between 1 to 12 weeks after the onset of symptoms. The commonest abnormality on motor nerve conduction study was prolonged distal latency (75%-83%) followed by reduction in CMAP amplitude (63%-82%), decreased velocity (48%-62%), conduction block (17%-39%) and f-wave abnormalities (37.8%-59%). Sensory conduction abnormalities were detected in over 20% of median, 25% of ulnar and 33% of sural nerves. All the patients had abnormality of at least two motor conduction parameters in one nerve when values beyond 2 SD of the mean were considered abnormal and over 70% of patients had three abnormalities in two nerves or two abnormalities in three nerves. Comparison with the prevailing criteria for demyelination revealed that the number of patients fulfilling them varied widely: Albers et al. (1985): 74.2%, Albers et al. (1989): 40.9% and Cornblath: 30.3%. We believe that the current criteria for detection of demyelination in acute neuropathy are too strict, underestimate the underlying pathology in GBS and need reassessment.  相似文献
