AH17, a new non-polyenic antifungal antibiotic produced by a strain of Spirillospora

An antibiotic (AH17) was produced by Spirillospora strain 719. This substance was obtained only from the broth filtrate after precipitation with acetic acid followed by extraction with n-butanol. Its purification was carried out by thin layer chromatography on silica gel followed by HPLC procedures. It showed activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. The spectroscopic and chemical properties were examined and indicated that AH17 was a quinone. It seems that this is a new antibiotic from Spirillospora.     

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of epidermal growth factor receptor in lung cancer: comparisons with immunohistochemistry, clinicopathological features and prognosis

PURPOSE: Cyclosporine-A (CSA) combined with corticosteroid therapy was administered to 12 patients with severe Beh?et's uveitis who were resistant to colchicine or cytotoxic therapy. METHODS: Previous colchicine or cytotoxic therapies were tapered off one month before CSA therapy. All patients were started on an initial oral dose of 5 mg/kg/day of CSA. After the first three months, the CSA dose was reduced to a maintenance dose according to the intraocular inflammatory response. RESULTS: The average follow-up period was 20 (12-36) months. Visual acuity remained the same in 12 (%54.5) and improved in 8 (%36.4) eyes. There was a decrease in the frequency (p<0.01) and severity (p<0.01) of ocular attacks and in the maintenance steroid dose (p<0.01) when compared with conventional therapy. The frequent side effects were paraesthesia-hyperesthesia, fatigue, nausea, hirsutism and dose-related nephrotoxicity in one patient. CONCLUSION: The results of the study suggest that low dose CSA combined with low dose corticosteroid may be an effective therapeutic alternative in the treatment of severe refractory Beh?et's uveitis.     

Plasma concentrations of bupivacaine for continuous peridural anesthesia in children]

BACKGROUND: Supraclinoid carotid aneurysms have traditionally been classified according to their relation to the major carotid branches, but considerable variation exists with respect to site of origin, projection, and relationship to the skull base. Distal internal carotid aneurysms with a superior or medial projection are uncommon vascular lesions, with an unusually high incidence of operative complications. METHODS: Surgical experience with five patients suffering from subarachnoid hemorrhage due to ruptured aneurysms of the dorsomedial wall of the distal internal carotid artery is presented, with emphasis on their angiographic appearance, anatomical features, and operative management. RESULTS: All five patients underwent surgical clipping. Intra-operative rupture occurred in two cases, with avulsion of the aneurysm from the internal carotid artery in both. A third patient experienced recurrent subarachnoid hemorrhage three days after uneventful surgery, due to the clip shearing off of the parent vessel. CONCLUSIONS: Distal internal carotid aneurysms do not conform to the usual principles of aneurysm formation and are unique in their dorsomedial location unrelated to an arterial bifurcation. Although their anatomy is straightforward and exposure is not restricted by bone or dural structures of the skull base, they possess extremely fragile necks which make surgical management particularly hazardous.     

Attachment but not penetration of bovine herpesvirus 1 is necessary to induce apoptosis in target cells

Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) induces apoptotic cell death in bovine peripheral blood mononuclear cells and B-lymphoma cells. Using a BHV-1 glycoprotein H null mutant, we have demonstrated that although penetration of BHV-1 is not required, attachment of BHV-1 viral particles is essential for the induction of apoptosis.     

Feedback design and precompensation for generalized systems

Feedback control designs are useful for removing the impulses that disturb the behavior of generalized state space systems. The aim of this paper is to detail the design of dynamic precompensators for the implementation of such feedback control designs. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given so that the resulting regulators are biproper. It is pointed out that these conditions are restrictive and that feedback control designs can lead to nonproper precompensators. To overcome this difficulty, a class of proper precompensators is proposed. These regulators, which result from an adaptation of the Silverman structure algorithm, remove the impulse behaviors that occur after the initial time by smoothing out the input vector.The authors acknowledge the Ecole Centrale de Lille, France, where this work was partially prepared.
