Superconductivity in hcp Li at high pressure

Recent experimental observations show that metallic lithium becomes a superconductor at high pressure. Here the theoretically calculated band structure as well as the superconducting transition temperature for this metal at 247 kbar pressure are reported. The band structure was obtained using the APW method. The superconducting transition temperature determined using the band structure results agrees fairly well with that measured experimentally.     

The COMMIT dental model: tobacco control practices and attitudes

The National Cancer Institute's program to help dentists reduce tobacco use among their patients is part of the Community Intervention Trial for Smoking Cessation, a 22-community, randomly controlled trial of an intervention program for smoking cessation. Results of COMMIT baseline surveys of dentists in the 11 intervention communities are presented.     

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland in a six-year-old girl

A 6-year-old white female was found to have an adenoid cystic carcinoma originating in a lacrimal gland. Eighteen months following diagnosis, the tumor recurred. Conservative surgery has been the sole mode of therapy. To date, after four operations and quadrimenstral imaging surveillance, there is no sign of disease progression. Our purpose is to record the unusual occurrence of an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland in a child. An interim report, 32 months after diagnosis, is presented.     

Placebo-controlled immunotherapy with Cocos nucifera pollen extract

The effectiveness of Cocos nucifera pollen extract immunotherapy (CPE-IT) was studied in 96 patients allergic to C. nucifera pollen. A placebo-controlled study was performed at random for a period of 6-12 months. The clinical status of the patients measured by the symptom-medication scores demonstrated that C. nucifera pollen-allergic patients had significant (p < 0.005) clinical improvement after CPE-IT in comparison to placebo treatment. Serological study resulted a significant reduction (p < 0.001) of specific IgE and significant elevation (p < 0.01) of specific IgG in post-therapeutic patients' sera which were correlated significantly (r = 0.45, p < 0.001); the changes of the above immunoglobulin levels in the placebo-treated patients were nonsignificant. However, there was no correlation between symptom-medication scores and changes in specific serum IgE or IgG levels.     

Streptococcus bovis bacteremia: unusual complications

Streptococcus bovis bacteremia is known to be related to neoplastic lesions of the colon. We describe a patient with several complications of S bovis bacteremia and adenocarcinoma of the colon--endocarditis, spondylodiskitis, and splenic abscess. We believe this is the eighth known case of endocarditis and diskitis caused by S bovis and the third case of endocarditis and splenic abscess by S bovis in a patient with adenocarcinoma of the colon.     

Prenatal determination of human platelet antigen type using DNA amplification following amniocentesis

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of a newly developed individualised birthweight ratio (IBR), which corrects for physiological birthweight determinants, in identifying infants at risk from the complications of macrosomia. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. SETTING: Obstetric unit, Nottingham City Hospital. SUBJECTS: 2835 women delivered between December 1991 and July 1992 and the infants of 624 of these, selected by virtue of their birthweight for gestation and IBR centile positions. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Skinfold thickness and ponderal index measurements, operative delivery, shoulder dystocia, fetal trauma, impaired glucose tolerance. RESULTS: Using an IBR above the 90th centile as a cut off results in 2.4% of infants being reclassified as normally grown and 3.1% are reclassified as large. The IBR does not result in the identification of any more infants with abnormal ponderal indices or skinfold thicknesses than birthweight for gestation. It does, however, identify more of the infants at risk of operative delivery, shoulder dystocia, fetal trauma and impaired glucose tolerance. CONCLUSION: The IBR significantly improves upon birthweight for gestation in identifying infants who suffer from the complications of relative macrosomia.     

Tripe palms: a cutaneous paraneoplastic syndrome

Tripe palms is a cutaneous paraneoplastic syndrome. We report a case of tripe palms in a 71-year-old man with non-small cell lung cancer. Approximately 90% of patients with tripe palms have an associated cancer, most commonly involving the lung or the stomach. Any patient with tripe palms must have a complete cancer workup, especially for lung and stomach cancer.     

Algal blooms in the spread and persistence of cholera

Cholera has been long associated with the seasonality of coastal algal blooms off Bangladesh. Using fluorescent antibody (FA) techniques, microbiologists have now identified a viable, non-cultivable form of Vibrio cholerae in a wide range of marine life, including cyanobacteria (Anabaena variabilis), diatoms (Skeletonema costatum), phaeophytes (Ascophyllum nodosum), in copepod molts, and in freshwater vascular aquatic plants (water hyacinths and duckweed). In unfavourable conditions V. cholerae assumes spore-like forms; with proper nutrients, pH and temperature, it reverts to a readily transmissible and infectious state. Nitrates and phosphates in sewage and fertilizers cause eutrophication, and scientists report an increase in intensity, duration and shifts in the biodiversity of algal blooms in many coastal, brackish and fresh waters worldwide. V. cholerae has been isolated from phyto- and zooplankton in marine and fresh waters near Lima, Peru. V. cholera 01, biotype El Tor, serotype Inaba, may have arrived in the Americas in the bilge of a Chinese freighter. There, in the abundant coastal sea life along the Latin American Pacific coast, nourished by the Humboldt current and eutrophication, it found a reservoir for surviving unfavourable conditions. It is hypothesized that the algae and Vibrio populations grew exponentially; consumed by fish, mollusks and crustacea, a heavy 'inoculum' of carriers infected with V. cholerae was generated and transported into multiple coastal communities.     

Nuclear cardiology, Part III: Scintigraphic evaluation of cardiac perfusion

OBJECTIVE: After reading Part III of this series of nuclear cardiology articles, the technologist should be able to: (a) compare and contrast radiopharmaceuticals used for myocardial perfusion imaging; (b) describe imaging protocols used for detecting coronary artery disease; and (c) describe imaging patterns seen following reconstruction of myocardial images.
