Mathematical models considering motile bacterial transport within a geometrically restrictive cylindrical tube were developed. Two macroscopic transport parameters, the random motility coefficient as a self-diffusion coefficient of the cell population and the chemotactic velocity as a chemical-induced velocity, were derived. The three-dimensional cell balance equation was reduced to forms similar to Segel's one-dimensional phenomenological cell balance equations with additional modifications for bacteria-wall interactions. Two conceptually different approaches accounting for such interactions were presented. The first approach parallels treatments in the gas kinetic theory by viewing bacterial interactions with walls as collisions and subsequent diffusive/specular reflections, which led to the Bosanquet formula for the bacterial diffusion coefficient. Based on the experimental observation that bacterial swimming motion is guided by a straight tube, the second approach considered modifications in the bacterial swimming orientation as a consequence of various long-range interactions with the tube surface. A phenomenological turning model capable of aligning bacterial motion along a tube axis was proposed. The model predicts that under the geometrical restriction of a small cylindrical tube, the macroscopic bacterial transport resulting from the proposed turning model can exhibit behavior that ranges from dimensionally reduced diffusion to pure wave propagation, depending on the influence of the tube diameter on the reversal probability in the bacterial swimming motion. Our theoretical model provides explicit equations that explain how such a transition can occur. The predicted results were then qualitatively compared with experimental data from the literature. As a preliminary comparison, we concluded that bacterial transport in cylindrical tubes of diameter 10 micrometers remains in the mode of a dimensionally reduced diffusion, and shifts to a wave motion when the tube diameter decreases to 6 micrometers.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: The application of high-frequency current to the AV junctional area results in a temperature rise in the myocardium and may cause accelerated junctional rhythm (AJR). The aim of the study was to characterize heat-induced AJR in an in vitro animal model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Studies were performed in isolated perfused pig and rabbit hearts. Using a small heating probe, we could induce AJR from a discrete area located in the middle of the triangle of Koch, which was smaller than the area from which RF energy application could elicit AJR. Histology showed that the heat-sensitive area was located over, or close to, the compact AV node. It did not correspond with the areas where double potentials were found or with the site(s) of earliest atrial activation during VA conduction. Microelectrode recordings revealed that AJR arose in nodal-type cells. Heat increased the slope of the phase 4 depolarization and shortened the action potential duration. Two types of AJR were observed: the first one was regular and the second one showed irregularity in the intervals. Interaction of multiple foci and the presence of conduction block between the foci and the His bundle caused the irregularity of the His-His intervals during the second type of AJR. CONCLUSION: AJR observed during heat and RF application in the AV nodal area results from the effect of heat on AV nodal cells with underlying pacemaker activity. The heat-sensitive area is located over, or very close to, the compact AV node.  相似文献

We describe an 8-year-old boy who had asymptomatic hypercalcemia 4 years after radiotherapy involving the left orbit and lungs. A right parathyroid adenoma was diagnosed, and normocalcemia was achieved after its removal. Routine monitoring of serum calcium and phosphate levels is recommended for children after head and neck irradiation.  相似文献

An in vivo antitumor screening of extracts of Gomphrena martiana indicated positive activity in the petroleum ether extract, and its further bioactivity-directed fractionation resulted in a lipophilic flavonoid fraction. Upon inoculation of various doses of 5,6,7-trisubstituted flavones on two murine tumor lines, Sarcoma 180 and Ehrlich's carcinoma, a decrease of tumor growth was observed. Gerbils learned to approach a spatial-olfactory stimulus that signaled access to their pairmate. Experiments 1 and 3 used a discrimination procedure in which 1 conditioned stimulus (the CS+) was presented immediately before access to the pairmate and another (the CS-) was presented alone. Both male and female gerbils came to approach the CS+ sooner than the CS- and spent more time near the CS+ than the CS-. Discrimination learning was facilitated by making the CS+ and CS- spatially distinct (Experiment 3). Learning also was demonstrated in male gerbils, using a between-subjects design with a single CS. Pairing the CS with the opportunity for social interaction resulted in greater approach to the CS within 10 trials than presenting the CS and social opportunity in an unpaired fashion (Experiment 2). These findings demonstrate social-affiliative learning in the Mongolian gerbil. Similarities and differences between these findings and sexual conditioning effects in other species are discussed.  相似文献

Carcinoma of the large bowel is the second leading cause of cancer mortality in Singapore. Although the great majority of patients are discovered at a stage where resection with curative intent is possible, almost half of the patients afflicted will die of it. The combination of 5-fluorouracil + levamisole used in patients with curatively resected high risk Dukes B2 and all Dukes' C colon cancers has been shown to reduce cancer recurrence rate and improve overall survival. Since 1990 adjuvant chemotherapy has been recommended for this group of patients. This report describes patients treated in Singapore, their toxicities and their outcome. A total of 341 patients were treated between 1990 and 1996. Treatment compliance was 71.8%. Toxicity was moderate with mainly grade 1-2 nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, stomatitis, alopecia, and neutropenia. There was 1 treatment-related death. Median recurrence-free interval was 81 months and median survival was not reached at 90 months. This regimen is tolerable. Until further randomised reports comparing 5-fluorouracil + levamisole to other combinations are available, this combination chemotherapy is recommended to patients after surgical resection of the high risk Dukes' B2 and Dukes' C colon cancer to reduce cancer recurrence and improve overall survival.  相似文献

Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins are produced by certain dinoflagellate species such as Gymnodinium catenatum and Alexandrium tamarensis, during certain periods of the year influenced by several environmental factors, affecting the aquaculture industry and mainly bivalve molluscs. HPLC with fluorescence detection is a powerful analytical technique for the analysis of such toxins; several HPLC alternatives have been developed in order to improve the liquid chromatographic analysis, but due to the complexity of the sample matrix, important work has been focused recently on the clean-up of samples prior to HPLC analysis. Solid-phase extraction procedures offer advantages for this clean-up. In this work we focus on the study of three different clean-up methods prior to HPLC with fluorescence detection analysis of PSP toxin present in contaminated mussel samples; by spiking uncontaminated mussel samples with two different PSP toxin standards and by calculating the recovery values for these experiments. These recoveries must be taken into account in order to quantify the exact amount of PSP toxins present in the contaminated samples.  相似文献

Two patients with proven 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-associated cardiotoxicity were treated with the specific thymidylate synthase inhibitor raltitrexed safely, without evidence of cardiotoxicity. Raltitrexed might be an alternative for patients with advanced colorectal cancer and 5-FU-associated cardiotoxicity. 5-FU cardiotoxicity is not due to the antineoplastic mechanisms via thymidilate synthase.  相似文献
