Wireless sensor networks are increasingly seen as a solution to the problem of performing continuous wide-area monitoring in many environmental, security, and military scenarios. The distributed nature of such networks and the autonomous behavior expected of them present many novel challenges. In this article, the authors argue that a new synthesis of electronic engineering and agent technology is required to address these challenges, and they describe three examples where this synthesis has succeeded. In more detail, they describe how these novel approaches address the need for communication and computationally efficient decentralized algorithms to coordinate the behavior of physically distributed sensors, how they enable the real-world deployment of sensor agent platforms in the field, and finally, how they facilitate the development of intelligent agents that can autonomously acquire data from these networks and perform information processing tasks such as fusion, inference, and prediction.  相似文献

The NASA Marshall Space Flight Center’s electrostatic levitation (ESL) laboratory has recently added an oxygen partial pressure controller. This system allows the oxygen partial pressure within the vacuum chamber to be measured and controlled in the range from approximately \(10^{-28}\,{\mathrm {to}}\,10^{-9}\) bar, while in a vacuum atmosphere. The oxygen control system installed in the ESL laboratory’s main chamber consists of an oxygen sensor, oxygen pump, and a control unit. The sensor is a potentiometric device that determines the difference in oxygen activity in two gas compartments (inside the chamber and the air outside of the chamber) separated by an electrolyte. The pump utilizes coulometric titration to either add or remove oxygen. The system is controlled by a desktop control unit, which can also be accessed via a computer. The controller performs temperature control for the sensor and pump, has a PID-based current loop and a control algorithm. Oxygen partial pressure has been shown to play a significant role in the surface tension of liquid metals. Oxide films or dissolved oxygen may lead to significant changes in surface tension. The effects on surface tension and viscosity by oxygen partial pressure in the surrounding environment and the melt dissolved oxygen content will be evaluated, and the results will be presented. The surface tension and viscosity will be measured at several different oxygen partial pressures while the sample is undercooled. Surface tension and viscosity will be measured using the oscillating droplet method.  相似文献

Context: Ethylcellulose is commonly dissolved in a solvent or formed into an aqueous dispersion and sprayed onto various dosage forms to form a barrier membrane to provide controlled release in pharmaceutical formulations. Due to the variety of solvents utilized in the pharmaceutical industry and the importance solvent can play on film formation and film strength it is critical to understand how solvent can influence these parameters.

Objective: To systematically study a variety of solvent blends and how these solvent blends influence ethylcellulose film formation, physical and mechanical film properties and solution properties such as clarity and viscosity.

Materials and methods: Using high throughput capabilities and evaporation rate modeling, thirty-one different solvent blends composed of ethanol, isopropanol, acetone, methanol, and/or water were formulated, analyzed for viscosity and clarity, and narrowed down to four solvent blends. Brookfield viscosity, film casting, mechanical film testing and water permeation were also completed.

Results and discussion: High throughput analysis identified isopropanol/water, ethanol, ethanol/water and methanol/acetone/water as solvent blends with unique clarity and viscosity values. Evaporation rate modeling further rank ordered these candidates from excellent to poor interaction with ethylcellulose. Isopropanol/water was identified as the most suitable solvent blend for ethylcellulose due to azeotrope formation during evaporation, which resulted in a solvent-rich phase allowing the ethylcellulose polymer chains to remain maximally extended during film formation. Consequently, the highest clarity and most ductile films were formed.

Conclusion: Employing high throughput capabilities paired with evaporation rate modeling allowed strong predictions between solvent interaction with ethylcellulose and mechanical film properties.  相似文献

Biologically and environmentally resorbable electronic devices support application possibilities that cannot be addressed with conventional technologies. This paper presents highly conductive, water-soluble composites that can be printed to form contacts, interconnects, antennas, and other important features that are essential to nearly all systems of this type. An optimized material formulation involves in situ polymerization to yield a polyanhydride containing a dispersion of molybdenum microparticles at appropriate concentrations. Comparisons of essential physical and electrical properties of these materials to those of composites formed with other polymers and other metal microparticles reveal the relevant considerations. Various functional demonstrations of screen-printed test structures and devices illustrate the suitability of these conductive inks for use in water-soluble electronic devices. A key advantage of the material introduced here compared to alternatives is its ability to maintain conductance over significant periods of time while immersed in relevant aqueous solutions. Studies involving live animal models establish the biocompatibility.  相似文献

The high-resolution X-ray structures of the deoxy forms of four recombinant hemoglobins in which Trp37(C3)beta is replaced with Tyr (betaW37Y), Ala (betaW37A), Glu (betaW37E), or Gly (betaW37G) have been refined and analyzed with superposition methods that partition mutation-induced perturbations into quaternary structure changes and tertiary structure changes. In addition, a new cross-validation statistic that is sensitive to local changes in structure (a "local Rfree" parameter) was used as an objective measure of the significance of the tertiary structure changes. No significant mutation-induced changes in tertiary structure are detected at the mutation site itself for any of the four mutants studied. Instead, disruption of the intersubunit contacts associated with Trp37(C3)beta results in (1) a change in quaternary structure at the alpha1beta2 interface, (2) alpha subunit tertiary structure changes that are centered at Asp94(G1)alpha-Pro95(G2)alpha, (3) beta subunit tertiary structure changes that are located between residues Asp99(G1)beta and Asn102(G4)beta, (4) increased mobility of the alpha subunit COOH-terminal dipeptide, and (5) shortening of the Fe-Nepsilon2His(F8) bond in the alpha and beta subunits of the betaW37G and betaW37E mutants. In each case, the magnitude of the change in a particular structural parameter increases in the order betaW37Y < betaW37A < betaW37E approximately betaW37G, which corresponds closely to the degree of functional disruption documented in the preceding papers.  相似文献

In an attempt to identify new members of the human type II hair keratin family by means of 3'- and 5'-RACE methods and cDNA from anagen hair follicles, we detected a sequence that encoded a hitherto unknown type II cytokeratin. The novel cytokeratin comprises 251 amino acids and exhibits the highest sequence homology with K5. Comparative one- and two-dimensional western blots of keratins from anagen hair bulbs, containing or not containing the outer and inner root sheaths (ORS/IRS), and from footsole epidermis with an antibody against the new cytokeratin, revealed its comigration with K6 and its expression in the ORS/IRS complex. We have therefore named the new cytokeratin K6hf, to distinguish it from the various K6 isoforms and to indicate its expression in the hair follicle. Both in situ hybridization with a K6hf-specific cRNA probe and indirect immunofluorescence with the K6hf antibody showed that K6hf is exclusively expressed in the so-called "companion layer" of the hair follicle, a single layered band of flat and vertically oriented cells between the cuboidal ORS cells and the IRS that stretches from the lowermost bulb region to the isthmus of the follicle. Concomitant K17 and K16 expression studies showed that besides suprabasal ORS cells, these cytokeratins are sequentially expressed subsequent to K6hf in companion cells above the hair bulb. Our study confirms the view of a vertically oriented companion layer differentiation. The clearly delayed K17 and K16 expression relative to that of K6hf in companion cells most probably excludes these keratins as possible type I partners of K6hf and suggests the existence of a still unknown type I partner of its own. Thus, not only morphologically but also biochemically, the companion layer is different from the ORS and can therefore be regarded as an independent histologic compartment of the hair follicle.  相似文献

The nuclear matrix is defined as the insoluble framework of the nucleus and has been implicated in the regulation of gene expression, the cell cycle, and nuclear structural integrity via linkage to intermediate filaments of the cytoskeleton. We have discovered a novel nuclear matrix protein, NRP/B (nuclear restricted protein/brain), which contains two major structural elements: a BTB domain-like structure in the predicted NH2 terminus, and a "kelch motif" in the predicted COOH-terminal domain. NRP/B mRNA (5.5 kb) is predominantly expressed in human fetal and adult brain with minor expression in kidney and pancreas. During mouse embryogenesis, NRP/B mRNA expression is upregulated in the nervous system. The NRP/B protein is expressed in rat primary hippocampal neurons, but not in primary astrocytes. NRP/B expression was upregulated during the differentiation of murine Neuro 2A and human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. Overexpression of NRP/B in these cells augmented neuronal process formation. Treatment with antisense NRP/B oligodeoxynucleotides inhibited the neurite development of rat primary hippocampal neurons as well as the neuronal process formation during neuronal differentiation of PC-12 cells. Since the hypophosphorylated form of retinoblastoma protein (p110(RB)) is found to be associated with the nuclear matrix and overexpression of p110(RB) induces neuronal differentiation, we investigated whether NRP/B is associated with p110(RB). Both in vivo and in vitro experiments demonstrate that NRP/B can be phosphorylated and can bind to the functionally active hypophosphorylated form of the p110(RB) during neuronal differentiation of SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells induced by retinoic acid. Our studies indicate that NRP/B is a novel nuclear matrix protein, specifically expressed in primary neurons, that interacts with p110(RB) and participates in the regulation of neuronal process formation.  相似文献

Combined analysis of multiple data sources has increasing application interest, in particular for distinguishing shared and source-specific aspects. We extend this rationale to the generative and non-parametric clustering setting by introducing a novel non-parametric hierarchical mixture model. The lower level of the model describes each source with a flexible non-parametric mixture, and the top level combines these to describe commonalities of the sources. The lower-level clusters arise from hierarchical Dirichlet Processes, inducing an infinite-dimensional contingency table between the sources. The commonalities between the sources are modeled by an infinite component model of the contingency table, interpretable as non-negative factorization of infinite matrices, or as a prior for infinite contingency tables. With Gaussian mixture components plugged in for continuous measurements, the model is applied to two views of genes, mRNA expression and abundance of the produced proteins, to expose groups of genes that are co-regulated in either or both of the views. We discover complex relationships between the marginals (that are multimodal in both marginals) that would remain undetected by simpler models. Cluster analysis of co-expression is a standard method of screening for co-regulation, and the two-view analysis extends the approach to distinguishing between pre- and post-translational regulation.  相似文献
