Unilateral visuospatial neglect is now widely acknowledged to be a highly heterogeneous condition: The overt manifestations of visual neglect can vary as a function of task, spatial domain, and mode of response (at least). Double dissociations (sometimes of the strong form) have already been reported between most of the components of what was originally thought to be a relatively stable construct within the visual modality. Nonetheless, throughout successive fractionations of neglect, reported cases of bidirectional task-specific neglect after unilateral brain damage are rare. We now report two such cases. After right hemisphere stroke, the first patient reliably showed severe left neglect on cancellation but right neglect on line bisection. After left hemisphere stroke, the second case showed right neglect on cancellation but left neglect on line bisection. Extensive investigation of case 1 confirmed our previous conjecture that the crucial distinction between these tasks lies in the presence or the absence of an overt target. In contrast to cancellation, line bisection demands the internal computation of the location of the "target" (the midpoint), followed by executing a motor response toward the precise location of that "imaginary" midpoint. The relative attentional and premotor contributions of the intact and damaged hemispheres to these forms of bidirectional neglect are also assessed. 相似文献

The principal behaviorally active volatile component (ca. 90% +) of the sex pheromone glands ofLutzomyia longipalpis from Jacobina. Brazil, has been isolated and characterized as a novel homosesquiterpene with the structure 3-methyl--himachalene (C16H26). A minor component (ca. 10%) of the gland extract has also been identified as the sesquiterpene-himachalene (C15H24). Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have gained more interest in recent years for military as well as civilian applications.
One potential application of AUVs is for the purpose of undersea surveillance. As research into undersea surveillance using
AUVs progresses, issues arise as to how an AUV acquires, acts on, and shares information about the undersea battle space.
These issues naturally touch on aspects of vehicle autonomy and underwater communications, and need to be resolved through
a spiral development process that includes at sea experimentation. This paper presents a recent AUV implementation for active
anti-submarine warfare tested at sea in the summer of 2010. On-board signal processing capabilities and an adaptive behavior

The majority of microfluidic devices used for cell culture, including Organ-on-a-Chips (Organ Chips), are fabricated using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer because it is flexible, optically clear, and easy to mold. However, PDMS possesses significant challenges for high volume manufacturing and its tendency to absorb small hydrophobic compounds limits its usefulness as a material in devices used for drug evaluation studies. Here, we demonstrate that a subset of optically clear, elastomeric, styrenic block copolymers based on styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene exhibit reduced absorption of small hydrophobic molecules and drug compounds compared to PDMS and that they can be fabricated into microfluidic devices with fine features and the flexibility required for Organ Chips using mass production techniques of injection molding and extrusion. 相似文献

The release of the Institute of Medicine (Kohn et al., 2000) report "To Err is Human", brought attention to the problem of medical errors, which led to a concerted effort to study and design medical error reporting systems for the purpose of capturing and analyzing error data so that safety interventions could be designed. However, to make real gains in the efficacy of medical error or event reporting systems, it is necessary to begin developing a theory of reporting systems adoption and use and to understand how existing theories may play a role in explaining adoption and use. This paper presents the results of a 9-month study exploring the barriers and facilitators for the design of a statewide medical error reporting system and discusses how several existing theories of technology acceptance, adoption and implementation fit with many of the results. We compared development of feline hindlimb collateral circulation after acute occlusion of the terminal aorta by ligation, thrombus formation, and formation of a "closed" aortic loop containing thromboplastin. Collateral circulation development was assessed by aortograms, scintillation scans, neurological signs following occlusion, measurement of hindlimb muscle blood flow, and forelimb and hindlimb temperature. In cats in which aortic occlusion was the result of ligation or thromboplastin in the aortic loop, paralysis was not evident. Aortograms and scintillation scans indicated hindlimb blood flow. Both muscle temperature and blood flow data indicated that the return of blood flow was rapid. The 5th lumbar artery appears to be the origin of the collateral vessels. The mid-zone component is a dorsal and ventral vertebral route and an epaxial muscle route. The reentry components are the 6th or 7th lumbar arteries. The collateral vessels arise from preexisting collateral vessels. Of those cats in which aortic occlusion was the result of a thrombus, all exhibited paralysis. Aortograms, scintillation scans, muscle temperature, and hindlimb blood flow data indicated reduced hindlimb blood flow. The results suggest that the thrombus has an inhibitory effect on the development of collateral circulation. 相似文献

The influence of Huntington's disease (HD) on the olfactory event-related potential (OERP), an electrophysiological measure of olfactory information processing, has not been reported to date. In the present study, olfactory and auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded monopolarly from Fz, Cz, and Pz electrode sites in 8 patients with HD and 8 age- and gender-matched control participants.
