Computer Application in Appliance Testing

The system developed for component testing at an appliance manufacturing facility is described. The complete installation consists of minicomputers that control several test stands and report the test results to a central quality assurance station. The various system components are 1) a disk-based central computer quality assurance station, 2) three computerized test stands for simultaneous testing of 48 ``infinite switches' used in electric range surface heater control, 3) air-fluidized aluminum oxide temperature baths, and 4) a snap-disk thermostat test stand, equipped with its own minicomputer and communications capability with the central station.     

Production of Recombinant Human Ceruloplasmin: Improvements and Perspectives

The ferroxidase ceruloplasmin (CP) plays a crucial role in iron homeostasis in vertebrates together with the iron exporter ferroportin. Mutations in the CP gene give rise to aceruloplasminemia, a rare neurodegenerative disease for which no cure is available. Many aspects of the (patho)physiology of CP are still unclear and would benefit from the availability of recombinant protein for structural and functional studies. Furthermore, recombinant CP could be evaluated for enzyme replacement therapy for the treatment of aceruloplasminemia. We report the production and preliminary characterization of high-quality recombinant human CP in glycoengineered Pichia pastoris SuperMan5. A modified yeast strain lacking the endogenous ferroxidase has been generated and employed as host for heterologous expression of the secreted isoform of human CP. Highly pure biologically active protein has been obtained by an improved two-step purification procedure. Glycan analysis indicates that predominant glycoforms HexNAc2Hex8 and HexNAc2Hex11 are found at Asn119, Asn378, and Asn743, three of the canonical four N-glycosylation sites of human CP. The availability of high-quality recombinant human CP represents a significant advancement in the field of CP biology. However, productivity needs to be increased and further careful glycoengineering of the SM5 strain is mandatory in order to evaluate the possible therapeutic use of the recombinant protein for enzyme replacement therapy of aceruloplasminemia patients.

Association of virulent Helicobacter pylori strains with ischemic heart disease

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported an association between chronic Helicobacter pylori infection and ischemic heart disease. However, it is not clear whether this association is really due to the virulence of the bacterium or is merely the result of confounding factors (in particular, age and social class). METHODS AND RESULTS: We assessed the prevalence of infection by Helicobacter pylori and by strains bearing the cytotoxin-associated gene-A (CagA), a strong virulence factor, in 88 patients with ischemic heart disease (age, 57+/-8 years; 74 men) and in 88 age- and sex-matched controls (age, 57+/-8 years; 74 men) with similar social background. Prevalence of Helicobacter infection was significantly higher in patients than in controls (62% versus 40%; P=.004), with an odds ratio of 2.8 (95% CI, 1.3 to 7.4; P<.001) adjusted for age, sex, main cardiovascular risk factors, and social class. Patients with ischemic heart disease also had a higher prevalence of CagA-positive strains (43% versus 17%; P=.0002), with an adjusted odds ratio of 3.8 (95% CI, 1.6 to 9.1; P<.001). Conversely, prevalence of CagA-negative strains was similar in patients and controls (19% versus 23%), with an adjusted odds ratio of 0.8 (95% CI, 0.4 to 1.4). CONCLUSIONS: The association between Helicobacter pylori and ischemic heart disease seems to be due to a higher prevalence of more virulent Helicobacter strains in patients. These results support the hypothesis that Helicobacter pylori may influence atherogenesis through low-grade, persistent inflammatory stimulation.     

Precise segmentation of the lateral ventricles and caudate nucleusin MR brain images using anatomically driven histograms

This paper demonstrates a time-saving, automated method that helps to segment the lateral ventricles and caudate nucleus in T1-weighted coronal magnetic resonance (MR) brain images of normal control subjects. The method involves choosing intensity thresholds by using anatomical information and by locating peaks in histograms. To validate the method, the lateral ventricles and caudate nucleus were segmented in three brain scans by four experts, first using an established method involving isointensity contours and manual editing, and second using automatically generated intensity thresholds as an aid to the established method. The results demonstrate both time savings and increased reliability     

Prognostic factors in esophageal cancer

Clinical and pathologic factors relevant to the prognosis of esophageal cancer are reviewed in this article. Clinical factors discussed include endoscopic, radiologic, and surgical findings. The importance of Barrett's esophagus and the role of endoscopic screening in the diagnosis of dysplasia and the prevention of adenocarcinoma are evaluated. Pathologic factors include the traditional ones of tumor type, stage, and grade as well as newer tumor markers related to DNA content, rate of cell proliferation, oncogenes, and tumor suppressor genes.     

Advanced RBSOA analysis for advanced power BJTs

Performances of some modern power BJT's in inductive turn-off are experimentally evaluated, by means of an unclamped non-destructive method. The different instabilities exhibited are classified and their influence on device performances is discussed both in clamped and unclamped applicationsAn “Instability Map” is proposed both as a synthetic picture which eases comparison of reverse-bias performances of devices having different ratings, and as an investigation tool for linking device behaviour to its physical features.It results that RBSOA performances are not just related to lateral dimensions of the emitter, but also to metallization lay-out of the chip, which evidently influences current distribution among cells.Finally, stray elements of testing circuit which affect results of RBSOA measurements are investigated, and some suggestions are proposed in order to let measurement results become independent of testing circuit.     

Comprehension of familiar and unfamiliar native accents under adverse listening conditions.

This study aimed to determine the relative processing cost associated with comprehension of an unfamiliar native accent under adverse listening conditions. Two sentence verification experiments were conducted in which listeners heard sentences at various signal-to-noise ratios. In Experiment 1, these sentences were spoken in a familiar or an unfamiliar native accent or in two familiar native accents. In Experiment 2, they were spoken in a familiar or unfamiliar native accent or in a nonnative accent. The results indicated that the differences between the native accents influenced the speed of language processing under adverse listening conditions and that this processing speed was modulated by the relative familiarity of the listener with the native accent. Furthermore, the results showed that the processing cost associated with the nonnative accent was larger than for the unfamiliar native accent.
