There is an emerging recognition that utility investments and other decisions that affect electric service reliability should be explicitly evaluated on the basis of their cost and benefit implications. A cost-benefit approach that quantifies the reliability benefits of alternatives in terms of the reduction in costs resulting from unserved energy enables the evaluation of generation and transmission capacity additions on a consistent, economic basis. This approach has been applied to two utility case studies. In a case study for Pacific Gas and Electric Company, it was used to evaluate three options for maintaining reliability in a major load center-two involving local generation, and the third, a new 230 kV transmission connection. In a case study for Duke Power Company, the approach was used to evaluate alternative designs for proposed additions to a transmission station. A 6H-SiC thyristor has been fabricated and characterized. A forward breakover voltage close to 100 V and a pulse switched current density of 5200 A/cm2 have been demonstrated. The thyristor is shown to operate under pulse gate triggering for turn-on and turn-off, with a rise time of 43 ns and a fall time of less than 100 ns. The forward breakover voltage is found to decrease by only 4% when the operating temperature is increased from room temperature to 300°C. It is found that anode ohmic contact resistance dominates the device forward drop at high current densities  相似文献

The effect of duty cycle of pulsed dc currents on the critical length-current density product, (jlc), was measured using the Blech-Kinsbron edge-displacement technique [Thin Solid Films 25, 327 (1975)]. Unencapsulated Al edge-displacement segments mere stressed at various duty cycles and the critical lengths, the so-called “Blech lengths”, were measured. It was found that jlc increased with decreasing duty cycle. We measured a factor of 2.6 increase in jlc for the 25% duty cycle as compared to dc. This duty cycle dependence of Blech length implies that electromigration resistance for an integrated circuit would be increased for small duty cycle operation by increasing the fraction of interconnects which are sub-Blech-length and are not susceptible to EM damage  相似文献

Resonant-cavity light-emitting diodes (RCLED) are novel, high-efficiency light-emitting diodes which employ optical microcavities. These diodes have higher intensities and higher spectral purity as compared to conventional LEDs. Analytical formulas are derived for the enhancement of the spontaneous emission along the optical axis of the cavity. The design rules for high-efficiency operation of RCLEDs are established. The temperature dependence of the emission intensity is analyzed in the range 20-80° and it is described by an exponential dependence with a characteristic temperature of 112 K. The modulation characteristics of RCLEDs exhibit 3 dB frequencies of 580 MHz. Eye diagrams at transmission rates of 622 Mb/s are wide open indicating the suitability of RCLEDs for high-speed data transmission  相似文献

As required by the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (HSK) all Switzerland's five nuclear power plants have to install a containment filtered venting system. The integrity of the containment (the last barrier for radioactive releases to the environment) can be threatened by overpressure due to inadequate heat removal. Design requirements have been provided for a specific class of severe accident scenarios. In general the capacity of the system is considered sufficient if it is able to vent the steam production corresponding to a decay heat level of 1% of the thermal reactor power. The mitigation capacity for the reduction of released radioactive material is specified by a retention factor of 1000 for aerosols to prevent or limit a long term ground contamination and a factor of 100 for elementary iodine for prevention or limiting of thyroid doses and to avoid short term evacuation. Besides existing requirements for design, maintenance and operation, additional claims such as passivity and operability at any pressure conditions inside the containment have to be met. Passivity implies that the system can be initiated after a severe accident without any operator action. The system also has to allow early manual venting. Various filtered venting systems are presently available. The nuclear power plants of Beznau, Gosgen, Leibstadt and Muhleberg have already selected such systems and already implemented them or are going to install them step by step. Beznau selected the Sulzer-EWI system which is using a water pool with nozzles-baffle plates and mixing elements to achieve the required filtration of the aerosols. In both Beznau units, the systems are installed and in standby mode. Gosgen, a pressurized water reactor as well as Beznau, is going to implement a filter system developed by Siemens-KWU, known as sliding pressure venting process, combining a venturi scrubber in a water pool and a mesh filter. The boiling water reactor of Leibstadt also selected the same system as Beznau while Müheberg choose the ABB system but not in the common design. The venturi pipes are thereby integrated in the water pool of the outer torus. The system in all five nuclear power plants is fully operable and in standby mode since December 1993.  相似文献

Battery storage is a crucial element in alternative energy and electric vehicle systems. Three battery storage configurations: a conventional; a parallel; and a dual, were analyzed for both shallow cycle and deep cycle lead-acid batteries to determine if capacity improvement is achievable. Daily profiles for the weekly irradiance, daily loads, and ambient temperature are simulated. Cycle tests were performed monthly to determine the effect each configuration had on the available battery capacity. Results for each battery type differ. Available capacity was improved using the parallel configuration with shallow cycle batteries and the dual configuration with deep cycle batteries  相似文献

An extensive survey of the porosity dependence of (room temperature) physical properties shows that mechanical properties and electrical and thermal conductivity, i.e. properties dependent on the local flux or fields in the material, follow minimum solid area models. This is shown extensively for elastic properties and tensile (flexure) strength, but consistency with other properties, e.g. compressive strength, hardness, electrical and thermal conductivity is also shown. Although data for ceramics is most extensive, data for rocks, metals, and carbon are included, since the consistency of these, especially of metals with ceramics, provides important support for the minimum solid area concept. While porosity characterization is generally minimal, expected model trends with pore character are corroborated by correlating processing and resultant expected pore character with porosity-property results. It is argued that properties dependent on mass should be better fit by a linear, i.e. rule of mixture, relationship between such properties and porosity. Support for this is shown in dielectric constant-porosity data.  相似文献

Continuous chemical vapour-deposited diamond-coated fibres with tungsten wire or SiC fibre cores are attractive for reinforcing metals and ceramics. The fibres have been embedded in Ti-6A1-4V alloy to produce a diamond fibre-reinforced composite. Both the fibres and the composite material are extremely difficult to cut without damage by conventional mechanical methods. The use of a Nd-YAG laser to cut these materials is described.  相似文献

The polarized absorption and luminescence properties of Nd3+ doped isostructural LiNbO3, MgO:LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 nonlinear bulk single crystals are reported. Pump-probe experiments associated with the Judd-Ofelt approach are used to estimate two types of room temperature cross sections: polarized emission cross sections of the dominant 4F3/24I1//2 transition near 1085 and 1093 nm and polarized excited-state absorption cross sections in the same spectral domain and in the green spectral range corresponding to self frequency doubling. Self frequency-doubling results are also given in Nd:LiNbO3 and Nd:MgO:LiNbO3 versus sample temperature.  相似文献
