Requirement of major histocompatibility complex-compatible microenvironment for spleen colony formation (CFU-S on day 12 but not on day 8)

The objectives of this study were 1) to evaluate interleukin-8 concentrations in cervical secretions in predicting preterm delivery, microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity and histologic chorioamnionitis in patients with preterm labor and intact membranes and 2) to compare the diagnostic value of interleukin-8 with fetal fibronectin determinations in predicting preterm delivery, microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity and histologic chorioamnionitis in patients with preterm labor and intact membranes. Interleukin-8 and fetal fibronectin were assayed in cervical secretions in 106 patients with singleton pregnancies and intact membranes admitted for preterm labor. Amniotic fluid obtained by amniocentesis was cultured and placentas (No = 43) analyzed for the presence of chorioamnionitis. The prevalence of pregnancies delivered preterm was 46.2% (49/106) and 15.09% (16/106) of amniotic fluid cultures were positive. Interleukin-8 levels in cervical secretions were significantly increased in patients who delivered preterm (p < or = 0.0001), in presence of positive amniotic fluid culture (p = 0.0016) and histological chorioamnionitis (p = 0.008) than in patients with negative findings. Receiver-operator characteristics curve analysis showed that an interleukin-8 value > 450 pg/ml is comparable to that of a fetal fibronectin value > 50 ng/ml in predicting preterm delivery (p = 0.247). Among patients who delivered preterm interleukin-8 concentrations > 860 pg/ml predicted a positive amniotic fluid culture with a sensitivity of 81.2% and a specificity 66.6%. Further, in patients who delivered preterm and had a negative amniotic fluid culture, IL-8 concentrations > 480 pg/ml predicted histological chorioamnionitis with a sensitivity 78.5% and specificity 61.5%. A positive fetal fibronectin > 50 ng/ml was not predictve of either a positive amniotic fluid culture or the presence of histological chorioamnionitis. In conclusion, increased concentrations of interleukin-8 and fetal fibronectin are associated with impending delivery and their diagnostic value seems comparable. However, interleukin-8 concentrations identify patients at risk of a positive amniotic fluid culture and the presence of histological chorioamnionitis. Measurement of interleukin-8 in cervical secretion is a non-invasive method to identify patients at risk for both preterm delivery and intrauterine infection.     

Rooster testicular germ cells and epididymal sperm contain P450 aromatase

We recently found that cytochrome P450 aromatase (P450arom) is present in germ cells of the mammalian testis and is capable of converting androgens to estrogens in the male reproductive tract. The objective of the present study was to determine whether testicular germ cells and epididymal sperm of an avian species are also capable of synthesizing estrogen. P450arom was localized in the rooster testis and epididymal region by immunocytochemistry, using an antiserum generated against purified human placental cytochrome P450arom. Immunostaining was present in pachytene spermatocytes, round spermatids, elongated spermatids, flagella of late spermatids, and sperm in the epididymal region. A positive reaction was also found in nonciliated cells of the epididymal region. However, the absence of mRNA for P450arom in the epididymal region indicated that the immunoreactive protein present in the epididymal region is not synthesized in this region. The immunoreactive P450arom found in epididymal sperm was shown to be active through use of a 3H2O assay. On the basis of these data, we conclude that rooster testicular germ cells and epididymal sperm are sites for the synthesis of estrogen, a potential regulator or modulator of germinal epithelium in the testis and the epithelium of the epididymal region of the avian species.     

Recovery of second-order optical nonlinearity in annealedproton-exchanged LiNbOx

The second-order nonlinear coefficients measured in proton-exchanged LiNbO₃ as a function of annealing time are discussed. Measurements of reflected second-harmonic power indicate that the second-order nonlinear coefficient d₃₃ is reduced to 60% of the bulk value as a result of proton exchange in pure benzoic acid. It is also shown that annealing restores the d-coefficients to almost the original value of the virgin crystal. For example, recovery to ~90% of the bulk value was obtained for a sample with a 0.3-μm-bulk proton-exchanged layer, annealed for 10 h at 350°C     

Vinyl acetate monomer—a pilot plant study

The kinetics of the reaction of acetic acid and acetylene over zinc acetate-activated carbon catalyst was investigated over a wide range of process variables in a pilot reactor. Although various catalytic reaction mechanisms were postulated, the rate of reaction was most satisfactorily correlated by a mechanism of surface reaction between charged adsorbed acetic acid and acetylene, which assumes that the rate controlling step was the irreversible charged adsorption of acetylene and acetic acid.     

The intracorporeal ultraviolet irradiation of the blood and its effect on the immune status in patients with a surgical infection

A dynamic investigation was done of the immunologic status in 75 patients with purulent surgical lesions of soft tissues. Applied in the complex of therapeutic measures was intracorporeal irradiation of blood with ultraviolet light under control of partial pressure of oxygen and carbon dioxide. The above irradiation was found out to make for a more rapid and marked stabilization of bodily immunologic status.     

Passive immune protection of turkeys against Coryza

Antisera made against whole cells of Bordetella avium protected turkeys against disease signs of turkey coryza, but antiserum against the dermonecrotic heat-labile toxin (DHLT) did not. Neither antiserum against whole cells nor antiserum against DHLT protected turkeys against colonization of the trachea by B. avium. At least 25 bands in whole cell lysate of B. avium separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) reacted in immunoblots with protective antiserum. These bands occurred at < 40 kDa and > 105.3 kDa. DHLT had an isoelectric point (pI) in the range pH 6.3-6.7. Following SDS-PAGE of isoelectric-focused fractions, two bands were recognized by anti-DHLT with immunoblots of pI 6.3, pI 6.5, and pI 6.7 fractions separated by SDS-PAGE.
