Warfarin anticoagulation in primary care: a regional survey of present practice and clinicians' views

The demand for anticoagulation services is rising. Warfarin anticoagulation has been shown to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation by 68%. This raises issues about how services are best organized to initiate and monitor anticoagulation in this potentially large group of patients. We report the results of a regional postal survey undertaken to describe the views of general practitioners and consultants regarding warfarin anticoagulation in light of this potentially high increase in demand.     

Isolation,identification and quantification by X-ray diffraction of carbide phases in 2 1/4Cr-1 Mo steel

The addition of controlled amounts of phosphorus to 2 1/4Cr-1 Mo steel, heat treated under two different conditions, has produced microstructures containing a wide spectrum of types and amounts of individual carbide phases. X-ray diffraction analysis of carbide precipitates has been undertaken following quantitative extraction by anodic dissolution of the matrix. By combining this with selective chemical dissolution of certain carbide types, calibrations of relative weight fractions against the intensities of suitable X-ray diffraction peaks may be obtained without the need for the addition of a standard calibration powder. This has allowed the determination of the absolute amounts, within a given steel sample, of the carbide types M₆C, M₇C₃, M₂₃C₆ and, most importantly, the creep-strengthening M₂X phase.     

The intracorporeal ultraviolet irradiation of the blood and its effect on the immune status in patients with a surgical infection

A dynamic investigation was done of the immunologic status in 75 patients with purulent surgical lesions of soft tissues. Applied in the complex of therapeutic measures was intracorporeal irradiation of blood with ultraviolet light under control of partial pressure of oxygen and carbon dioxide. The above irradiation was found out to make for a more rapid and marked stabilization of bodily immunologic status.     

Passive immune protection of turkeys against Coryza

Antisera made against whole cells of Bordetella avium protected turkeys against disease signs of turkey coryza, but antiserum against the dermonecrotic heat-labile toxin (DHLT) did not. Neither antiserum against whole cells nor antiserum against DHLT protected turkeys against colonization of the trachea by B. avium. At least 25 bands in whole cell lysate of B. avium separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) reacted in immunoblots with protective antiserum. These bands occurred at < 40 kDa and > 105.3 kDa. DHLT had an isoelectric point (pI) in the range pH 6.3-6.7. Following SDS-PAGE of isoelectric-focused fractions, two bands were recognized by anti-DHLT with immunoblots of pI 6.3, pI 6.5, and pI 6.7 fractions separated by SDS-PAGE.     

Polymorphism of silica

A study of the stability relations of pure silica phases is described. It is shown that although cristobalite can be produced from pure quartz by heating it is not possible to produce tridymite in this fashion; a flux or mineralizer is required for tridymite formation and even in this case cristobalite is produced before any tridymite is observed. Thus it is concluded that the stability relations for the silica minerals proposed by Fenner are incorrect and that tridymite is not a stable phase in the pure silica system.
