Effect of instructions and modeling on trainees low in interpersonal-communication skills.

Examined the effects of instructions and modeling in the reflection-of-feeling training of individuals low in interpersonal-communication skills. Participants with low scores on R. Carkhuff's Communication Index (25 males and 25 females) were randomly assigned by sex to 1 of the 5 training groups so that there were 5 males and 5 females in each group. After viewing videotaped training material, each participant conducted a 15-min interview with a volunteer "client" and completed the Communication Index a second time. Interviews were scored for frequency of reflection-of-feeling responses and level of empathic communication displayed. Analysis of the reflection-of-feeling data indicated that instructions and instructions-plus-modeling were facilitative procedures. Ratings of written and verbal empathy demonstrated the effectiveness of the 2 combined conditions: instructions-plus-modeling and modeling-plus-instructions. Calculation of correlations among scores on criterion measures revealed a positive correlation between reflection-of-feeling scores and ratings of empathic communication. Clinical and pathological study of 24 cases of gliosarcoma

The authors review the clinical and pathological features of 24 patients with gliosarcoma. The study revealed the following findings. Gliosarcoma occurs more frequently than is indicated in the literature, and in our series was present in 8% of all cases of glioblastoma multiforme. The presenting features are not significantly different from those of glioblastoma multiforme. The lesion often presents itself at surgery as a firm, well circumscribed mass within the temporal lobe, and at surgery it is commonly mistaken for a meningioma. There is an increased likelihood of metastasis compared to that of glioblastoma. The prognosis is no worse than that of glioblastoma, in spite of the addition of sarcomatous elements.     

Influence of high temperature stress of 16-day embryos on subsequent hatchability

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of acute heat stress on late-stage chicken embryos. Embryos were incubated at a normal control temperature (37.5 degrees C.) for 16 days and were then subjected to 40.6, 43.3, 46.1 or 48.9 degrees C. for various periods of time in another incubator of the same type. At the end of the stress period all embryos were placed back into the control incubator for the remainder of the incubation period. Exposure of embryos for 24 hours to a temperature of 40.6 degrees C, caused no major detrimental effects on hatchability. Exposure for 6 hours to the temperature of 43.3 degrees C, caused a decrease in hatchability with a severe decline in hatchability occurring after 9 hours of exposure. Exposure to 46.1 degrees C. for 3 hours or 48.9 degrees C for 1 hour killed all embryos. Chicks which hatched following a severe heat stress had a high incidence of clubbed, wiry down and exhibited an unsteady gait.     

Elective experiences in family medicine for medical students

A new technique to insert acupuncture needles into the tissue without touching the needle with the fingers of the acupuncturist was developed by the authors. It is easy to perform and completely eliminates the problem of contamination. The bending of the needle is less frequent and the pain sensation of the patient is also minimized.     

Relative DNA contents of somatic nuclei of ox, sheep and goat

Five feeder pigs 4 to 6 months old were orally inoculated with transmissible gastroenteritis virus. Diagnosis of transmissible gastroenteritis was made on the basis of clinical signs and examination of intestinal mucosa by the fluorescent antibody technique. Immunoglobulins were extracted from intestinal fluid of infected feeder pigs. Virus-binding and neutralizing antibodies were detected in intestinal extracts between 7 and 56 days after infection. The concentration of binding antibodies reached a peak at 21 days after infection and was on the decline at the end of the experiment on the 56th postinfection day. In contrast, neutralizing intestinal antibody concentration was increasing on day 56. In both systems, the predominant immunoglobulin was of the IgA class. Examination of blood serums of the pigs by the plaque-reduction technique showed progressive antibody increases ranging in titer from 1:8 on day 7 to 1:256 on day 56 after infection. An analysis of the protein profiles from these serums showed a significant increase in the concentration of gamma-globulins and a decrease in the albumin fraction.     

L-fucose metabolism in cystic fibrosis fibroblasts

The capacity of skin fibroblasts from cystic fibrosis (CF) and non-CF individuals to incorporate exogenous L-fucose into various metabolic pools was compared. Incorporation into intracellular acid-soluble pools and extracellular glycopeptides was measured by a dual-label co-chromatographic technique, whereas total macromolecular incorporation was measured by a single-label procedure. Although CF and normal fibroblasts incorporate exogenous fucose into intracellular acid-soluble and high molecular weight compounds in a similar manner, CF cells appear to be characterized by an increased incorporation of label into low molecular weight extracellular glycopeptides.     

Certain quantitative indicators of the cells of human epidermis

Three age- and sex-matched groups of 10 patients were treated intravenously with imipramine, chlorimipramine, and imipramine-N-oxide respectively, in increasing doses from 25 mg to 150-175 mg given as single daily infusions during 1 hour. No systemic changes of heart frequency and blood pressure were found during the infusions in spite of the high dosage of tricyclic antidepressants given such a short period as 1 hour. The patients were examined regarding orthostatic reactions as well as ECG changes before, after 4-5 infusions and after 8-10 infusions. There were more orthostatic abnormalities and ECG changes in the patients treated with imipramine than in those treated with imipramine-N-oxide and there were practically no changes in the chlorimipramine group. However, no statistically significant orthostatic changes were found.
