This study investigated interrelations among conditions of household socioeconomic disadvantage, proximal environmental experiences, and adaptational outcomes in a sample of 398 middle grade, early adolescents from a predominantly poor, rural area. Findings indicated that levels of disadvantage were related to both socioemotional and academic adjustment, with those from relatively disadvantaged backgrounds faring most poorly. Specifically, youth from homes in which adults were employed in low-income, unskilled occupations were found to have lower levels of school performance and achievement compared to those from homes in which adults were employed in higher paying semi-skilled or skilled/professional occupations. Further, youth from families in which neither parent had graduated from high school exhibited significantly worse socioemotional and academic adjustment than did those whose parents had higher educational levels. Youth who lived in relatively disadvantaged homes also reported more negative experiences of proximal environmental conditions relating to family and school contexts and greater exposure to stressful life events. Most notably, findings provided support for employing an ecological-mediational perspective to understand patterns of linkage between socioeconomic disadvantage and levels of adjustment. Support for this viewpoint included the finding that proximal environmental experiences were significant predictors of adolescent adjustment, independent of shared variance with conditions of household disadvantage, whereas conditions of disadvantage in several instances were no longer related significantly to indices of adjustment once their association with proximal environmental conditions was taken into account. The discussion considers implications for the targeting and scope of ecologically oriented approaches to preventive intervention.  相似文献

Reproduction in vertebrates is regulated by internal signals such as hormone levels and by external signals such as social interactions. In an African cichlid fish, Haplochromis burtoni, the effect of social interactions is evident in the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis of males. Territorial males, characterized by aggressive and reproductive activity, have significantly larger hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-containing neurons and larger testes than nonterritorial males. Furthermore, a switch in the social status of an adult male causes a corresponding change in GnRH neuron size and testis size. Here we show that the GnRH-containing neurons in the hypothalamus of adult territorial males are also influenced by gonadal hormones. Castration of territorial males caused GnRH neurons to increase in size. This neuronal hypertrophy in castrated animals was prevented either by testosterone (T) or 11-ketotestosterone (KT) treatment. Estradiol (E2) treatment did not reduce GnRH cell size in castrated animals. These results suggest that androgens reduce the size of GnRH cells through negative feedback. Since E2 had no effect, androgen influence on GnRH cell size appears to be independent of aromatization. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that the setpoint for hypothalamic GnRH cell size is determined by social cues and that this setpoint is maintained by negative feedback from gonadal androgens.  相似文献

Dietary treatment with three diets differing in vitamin E, Low E (15 mg of vitamin E/kg diet), Medium E (150 mg/kg), or High E (1,500 mg/kg), resulted in guinea pigs with low (but nondeficient), intermediate, or high heart alpha-tocopherol concentration. Neither the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and reductase, nor the nonenzymatic antioxidants, GSH, ascorbate, and uric acid were homeostatically depressed by increases in heart alpha-tocopherol. Protection from both enzymatic (NADPH dependent) and nonenzymatic (ascorbate-Fe2+) lipid peroxidation was strongly increased by vitamin E supplementation from Low to Medium E whereas no additional gain was obtained from the Medium E to the High E group. The GSH/GSSG and GSH/total glutathione ratios increased as a function of the vitamin E dietary concentration closely resembling the shape of the dependence of heart alpha-tocopherol on dietary vitamin E. The results show the capacity of dietary vitamin E to increase the global antioxidant capacity of the heart and to improve the heart redox status in both the lipid and water-soluble compartments. This capacity occurred at levels six times higher than the minimum daily requirement of vitamin E, even in the presence of optimum dietary vitamin C concentrations and basal unstressed conditions. The need for vitamin E dietary supplementation seems specially important in this tissue due to the low constitutive levels of endogenous enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants present of the mammalian heart in comparison with those of other internal organs.  相似文献

The opisthosomal integument and sensilla auriformia of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus Neumann larvae, nymphs, females and males, both unfed, fed, and during molt, were examined by light and electron microscopy in relation to semiochemical production. The integument consists of epidermis, endocuticle, exocuticle, epicuticle, a superficial wax layer and a variable additional deposit. The integument of immature instars and females grows greatly during feeding. The integument is traversed by pore canals from the epidermis to the outer wax canals. The epidermis can secrete material to the exterior by way of the pore canals and wax canals. The sensillum auriforme is a common disk-shaped organ, with a complex internal chamber open to the exterior by way of a pore. It has no apparent secretory capacity and is of presumed sensory function. It is located in the integument of scutum and alloscutum of all instars.  相似文献

Ninety patients with carcinoma of the hypopharynx underwent pharyngolaryngectomy and reconstruction with a jejunal free autograft. Fifty-five patients had primary surgery and 35 salvage surgery for recurrence after radiotherapy. Following primary surgery 28 patients had postoperative radiotherapy and 27 did not. Complications occurred in 51 per cent of patients, the most common being necrosis of the jejunal graft (19 per cent); 12 per cent developed significant stenosis and 4 per cent died in the perioperative period. Eleven per cent of patients developed a fistula. The total number of complications diminished as the experience of the unit increased. Median follow-up was 4.9 years. Of patients treated with primary surgery, 48 per cent developed primary site recurrence (at 3 years) and 53 per cent neck node recurrence (at 5 years). The tumour-specific 5-year survival rate for all patients was 42 per cent. Following primary surgery 28 per cent survived for 5 years and after salvage surgery the rate was 59 per cent. Positive resection margins and extensive neck disease adversely affected survival (P = 0.02 and P = 0.001 respectively). The free revascularized jejunal graft is a safe and predictable method of repair following total pharyngolaryngectomy.  相似文献

Bacteriochlorin a (BCA), a new photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy, was labelled with 99mTc-pertechnetate following a method for the irreversible coupling of 99mTc-pertechnetate to proteins. Biodistribution studies were conducted in male Syrian Golden hamsters with hamster Greene melanoma implanted s.c. on both sides of the abdomen. After i.v. administration of 99mTc-pertechnetate-labelled BCA 17 tissue and fluid samples were analysed at time intervals ranging from 1 to 24 h. Technetium-labelled BCA showed a pronounced affinity for tissues belonging to the reticuloendothelial system. Peak activities, 1 h post-injection, were distributed as follows: lung, liver, spleen, urine > small intestine, kidney, blood, heart, stomach, large intestine > thyroid, tumour, bone, skin, muscle, eye > brain. It is concluded that the technetium-labelled photosensitizer BCA does not accumulate selectively in neoplastic tissue.  相似文献
