Compressive buckling analysis and design of stiffened flat plates with multilayered composite reinforcement

This paper describes an analysis and its application in design for compressive buckling of flat stiffened plates considered as an assemblage of linked orthotropic flat plate and beam elements. Plates can be multilayered, with possible coupling between bending and stretching. Structural lips and beads are idealized as beams. The plate and the beam elements are matched along their common junctions for displacement continuity and force equilibrium in an exact manner. Buckling loads are found as the lowest of all possible general and local failure modes. The mode shape is used to determine whether buckling is a local or general instability and is particularly useful to the designer in identifying the weak elements for redesign purposes. Typical design curves are presented for the initial buckling of a hat stiffened plate locally reinforced with boron fiber composite.

Silicone Transformer Liquid: Use, Maintenance, and Safety

Silicone transformer liquid has been in use in over 10 000 small and medium power transformers in the United States since 1972. In this time, the reliability and performance of silicone liquid has been proven. Silicone liquid is chemically inert and thermally stable. These characteristics will allow for a long and useful life and ease of reclaiming contaminated liquid. Similar procedures are used to process and test silicone liquid and mineral oil. Transformer designs have been modified in only minor ways to accommodate the differences between silicone, mineral oil, and askarel. The coefficient of expansion, the heat transfer characteristics, and the dielectric properties have all been thoroughly investigated. Silicone fluid has been used in new and retrofilled transformers without any unusual or premium design features. In a monitoring program, no water contamination, leaking, overheating or any other operational problem were experienced in over three million documented hours of service in all kinds of environments. The safety of silicone liquid has been established through thorough testing and field experience. The very low heat release rates and unique burning characteristics combine to make silicone a very safe material for use in power transformers. In addition, silicone liquids are among the least toxic of all commercial chemicals. This, and their ecological compatibility, make silicone a safe environmental choice in replacing askarel.     

Disposition toward military service: A psychological inquiry.

Explored demographic, personality, and attitudinal factors that might relate to one's disposition toward military service. 300 male (psychology) university students were administered a 22-variable questionnaire that included 7 personality scales. Ss who claimed to be conscientious objectors (COBs) differed from nonconscientious objectors (NCOBs) on all attitude scales. COBs also scored significantly higher than NCOBs on Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale and significantly lower on the California F Scale. No significant findings were obtained for measures on the Machiavellianism scale (R. Christie, 1964), Risk-Taking scale (N. Kogan and M. A. Wallach, 1964), Manifest Anxiety scale (J. A. Taylor, 1953), and Social Desirability scale (D. P. Crowne and D. Marlowe, 1964). Findings provide positive evidence for the validity of the COB concept.
