Deer were exposed for three years to photoperiods which increased or decreased two hours every four months, starting at 4L/20D or 20L/4D, respectively. Under both sets of conditions, antlers were repeatedly shed and replaced, usually in synchrony with every other time the day lengths were changed. On decreasing days, antler cycles were omitted as the photoperiod passed the equinox (12L/12D). On increasing days, the equinoctial photoperiod induced prolonged episodes of antler growth. The tendency for the antler replacement cycle to lock onto alternate changes in artificial photoperiods is consistent with the seasonal growth of antlers every other time the day lengths change in the natural environment. It is suggested that antler replacement is triggered neither by shortening nor lengthening days, but by the alternation of such changes irrespective of the direction of the shift in the photoperiod.  相似文献

Six male squirrel monkeys were subjected to a Sidman nondiscriminated avoidance schedule (R-S, S-S-20 sec) that superimposed 3-min conditioned stimuli (CS) unavoidable shock pairings upon the ongoing avoidance behavior. Five of the 6 animals demonstrated facilitated avoidance response rates during the CS, while one animal demonstrated suppressed rates during the CS. Morphine sulfate (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 mg/kg) altered these patterns, causing the suppressor to facilitate, while the facilitators demonstrated reduced levels of response elevation during the aversive CS. Morphine also led to a reliable reduction in overall response rate and an increase in the number of shocks received. No consistent drug effects were noted with regard to general motor activity. These results were interpreted to suggest that a potent analgesic agent, such as morphine, was able to reduce the level of fear motivation normally generated by the aversive CS. Since changes in relative rate during the aversive CS were quite reliable both within and between animals, it was suggested that this behavioral schedule might prove useful in assaying the fear-reducing qualities of a variety of drugs. A cautionary note, however, indicated that other explanations, most notably, a rate dependent hypothesis, could account for the data without assuming the level of fear was altered.  相似文献

Modern optics often require dielectric thin films of precisely controlled optical indices. One method of producing such films is by rf sputtering at extremely low deposition rates (~0·1 μh?1). Thermal and plasma instabilities occur during the deposition process (often > 10 h duration) and the sputtering system therefore requires continuous monitoring to ensure appropriate corrective action.The objective of this paper is to examine the technology involved in developing supervision circuitry to monitor the parameters of a conventional commercially available rf sputtering system employed in the fabrication of high optical quality dielectric films for integrated-optics applications. The techniques used have overcome the difficulties of operating analogue circuitry in a high rf noise environment.A novel reflection-interferometer, enabling continuous monitoring of sputtered film thickness in a close spaced target-substrate system, was developed. The design has been shown to possess enhanced alignment tolerance, particularly for high refractive index films.  相似文献

PURPOSE: This multicenter, randomized phase III clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of etoposide plus carboplatin (EC) versus etoposide plus cisplatin (EP) in good-risk germ cell tumor (GCT) patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between October 1986 and December 1990, 270 patients with good-risk GCTs were randomized to receive four cycles of either EP or EC. The etoposide dose in all patients was 100 mg/m2 on days 1 through 5. EP patients received cisplatin at 20 mg/m2 on days 1 through 5 and therapy was recycled at 21-day intervals. For EC patients, the carboplatin dose was 500 mg/m2 on day 1 of each cycle and the EC recycling interval was 28 days. RESULTS: Two hundred sixty-five patients were assessable: 131 patients treated with EC and 134 treated with EP. One hundred fifteen of 131 assessable patients (88%) treated with EC achieved a complete response (CR) versus 121 of 134 patients (90%) treated with EP (P = .32). Sixteen patients (12%) treated with EC relapsed from CR versus four patients (3%) treated with EP. Therefore, 32 patients (24%) who received carboplatin experienced an event (incomplete response [IR] or relapse) compared with 17 of 134 patients (13%) who received cisplatin (P = .02). At a median follow-up of 22.4 months, event-free and relapse-free survival were inferior for patients treated with EC (P = .02 and P = .005, respectively). No difference in overall survival was evident (P = .52). CONCLUSION: Two-drug therapy with EC using this dose and schedule was inferior to therapy with EP. Cisplatin remains as the standard platinum analog in the treatment of patients with good-risk GCTs. Carboplatin should be restricted to investigational trials in GCT.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the peak physiological responses among four protocols that employed different amounts of handweighted exercise in 16 males (aged 26.3 +/- 4.1 years). The four protocols were (a) uphill treadmill running (UR; 3.36 m.s-1, 2.5% grade increase-3 min-1); (b) uphill treadmill walking while pumping 1.36-kg handweights (HW) (UWHW; 1.79 m.s-1, 5.0% grade increase x 3 min-1; (c) treadmill walking while pumping .91-kg HW (WHW; 1.79 m.s-1, 0% grade, .91-kg HW increase x 3 min-1); and (d) standing in place and pumping HW (SHW; arm work as described in WHW). It was hypothesized that the peak responses would be inversely proportional to the estimated muscle mass activated (i.e., UR = UWHW > WHW > SHW). Dependent variables included peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak), peak heart rate (HRpeak), peak ventilation (Ve peak), and peak respiratory exchange ratio (RERpeak). No differences were noted between UR and UWHW with respect to any of the dependent variables. All variables (except RERpeak) were greater (p < .01) in UR and UWHW than either WHW or SHW. RERpeak was greater (p < .01) in UR and UWHW than in WHW. VO2 peak and HRpeak were greater (p < .01) in WHW when compared to SHW. Mean VO2 peak was 97.5, 69.7, and 60% of UR for UWHW, WHW, and SHW, respectively. Therefore, walking and pumping handweights provides a maximal stimulus to the oxygen transport system.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to establish the estrogen receptor (ER) expression and content in human aorta fragments removed at the time of by-pass surgery. To this end, we adopted a radioligand binding assay to evaluate either soluble (S) or nuclear (N) ER using dextran-coated charcoal (DCC) and filtration methods, respectively. To better define the intratissular distribution and content of ER, we also measured the presence of a 27 kDa heat shock protein (HSP27), a well established ER-associated protein, using D5 monoclonal antibody. Finally, we analysed the different molecular isoforms of both S and N ER using size exclusion-high performance liquid chromatography (SE-HPLC). High affinity (type I) sites of estrogen binding were detected in 17 out of 19 samples in either S or N fraction, although only 9 out of 19 cases displayed site 1 ER in both cell compartments. ER levels in aortic tissues, detected by radioligand method, compare well with those we have found in other hormone-sensitive human cancer tissues and cells. SE-HPLC analysis revealed two main receptor isoforms in the soluble fraction, having 65 kDa and 18 kDa molecular mass, while a minor component of 29 kDa was also found; the nuclear fraction displayed again two major components of 38 and 23 kDa. Using the HSP27 immunohistochemistry we observed a major staining occurring in smooth muscle cells (SMC), with an increasing intensity towards the lumen. All samples, including the ER negative ones, exhibited some degree of histochemical staining. Using an arbitrary cut-off value, 7 out of 12 samples displayed a highly positive staining, 6 of which showed nuclear ER. Furthermore, SE-HPLC separation indicated the presence of a 64.9 kDa component in the soluble fraction, according to the well known relative molecular mass of ER. Following HSP27 immunohistochemistry, the overall staining intensity in aortic SMC approaches that seen in endometrial and breast epithelia, whilst the muscle ER content is generally lower. Although our data are compatible with a direct role of estrogens in arterial function, the extent of the link with arterial disease remains to be established.  相似文献
