Drywood termites are able to assess wood size using vibratory signals, although the exact mechanism behind this assessment ability is not known. Important vibratory characteristics such as the modal frequencies of a wooden block depend on its geometry and boundary conditions; however, they are also dependent on the material characteristics of the block, such as mass, density and internal damping. We report here on choice experiments that tested the ability of the drywood termite Cryptotermes secundus to assess wooden block size using a solid wooden block paired with a composite block, the latter made of either wood and aluminium or wood and rubber. Each composite block was constructed to match mass or low-frequency vibratory modes (i.e. fundamental frequency) of the solid wooden block. The termites always chose the blocks with more wood; they moved to the solid wooden blocks usually within a day and then tunnelled further into the solid wooden block by the end of the experiment. Termites offered composite blocks of wood and rubber matched for mass were the slowest to show a preference for the solid wooden block and this preference was the least definitive of any treatment, which indicated that mass and/or damping may play a role in food assessment. This result clearly shows that the termites were not fooled by composite blocks matched for mass or frequency, which implies that they probably employ more than a single simple measure in their food assessment strategy. This implies a degree of sophistication in their ability to assess their environment hitherto unknown. The potential importance of alternative features in the vibrational signals is discussed.  相似文献

How can we achieve the conflicting goals of reduced transmission power and increased capacity in a wireless network, without attempting to follow the instantaneous state of a fading channel? In this paper, we address this problem by jointly considering power control and multiuser detection (MUD) with outage-probability constraints in a Rayleigh fast-fading environment. The resulting power-control algorithms (PCAs) utilize the statistics of the channel and operate on a much slower timescale than traditional schemes. We propose an optimal iterative solution that is conceptually simple and finds the minimum sum power of all users while meeting their outage targets. Using a derived bound on outage probability, we introduce a mapping from outage to average signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) constraints. This allows us to propose a suboptimal iterative scheme that is a variation of an existing solution to a joint power control and MUD problem involving SIR constraints. We further use a recent result that transforms complex SIR expressions into a compact and decoupled form, to develop a noniterative and computationally inexpensive PCA for large systems of users. Simulation results are presented showing the closeness of the optimal and mapped schemes, speed of convergence, and performance comparisons.  相似文献

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a relatively uncommon yet distinct type of malignant lymphoma whose clinical and pathological characterization has been limited by the small numbers of cases published to date. We studied 80 cases of MCL seen at a single institution over 7 years to determine both clinical and pathological prognostic factors. The patients in this study were predominantly male (70%) and older (mean age, 63 years) and presented with advanced-stage disease (88%). Extranodal involvement was common. Median overall survival (OS) was 43 months. Except for performance status, prognosis was not significantly influenced by clinical prognostic factors. Histologically, MCL architecture was classified as diffuse (78%), nodular (16%), or mantle zone (6%); the OS among these groups was identical. Increased mitotic activity (>20 mitotic figures per 10 high power fields), blastic transformation, and peripheral blood involvement at diagnosis also predicted for a worse outcome, but bone marrow involvement did not. The presence or absence of a translocation t(11; 14) by cytogenetic analysis or a bcl-1 rearrangement by Southern analysis did not significantly predict outcome. In summary, this study of 80 cases of MCL highlights its distinctive clinicopathologic features and shows that increased mitotic activity, blastic morphology, and peripheral blood involvement at diagnosis are prognostically important factors.  相似文献

Myocardial and pulmonary beta-adrenoceptors can be imaged with 2-(S)-(-)-(9H-carbazol-4-yl-oxy)-3-[1-(fluoromethyl)ethyl]amino-2- propanol (S-1'-[18F]fluorocarazolol, I). Quantification of unmodified fluorocarazolol in plasma is necessary for analysis of PET images in terms of receptor densities. We have determined I and its radioactive metabolites in rat, sheep and human plasma, using (1) solid-phase extraction (C18) followed by reversed-phase HPLC and (2) direct injection of untreated plasma samples on an internal-surface reversed-phase (ISRP) column. The two methods were in good agreement. Unmodified I decreased from over 99% initially to less than 5%, 5-10% and 20% at 60 min post-injection in rats, sheep and human volunteers, respectively. Protein binding in sheep and human plasma was determined by ultrafiltration. The fraction of total plasma radioactivity bound to protein and the fraction representing unmodified radioligand were linearly correlated, suggesting that fluorocarazolol was more than 70% protein-bound, whereas its metabolites showed negligible protein binding. Direct injection of plasma on an ISRP column seems a convenient method for quantification of lipophilic radioligands such as fluorocarazolol.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Investigations using living human cancer cells and the nude mouse model were conducted to evaluate the expression of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in various cancers grown in vitro and in vivo. The aim was to determine whether membrane-associated hCG in any of its forms is a characteristic metastatic marker, and at what levels or ratios. METHODS: Human cancer cell lines known to produce tumors that metastasize spontaneously when grown in nude mice (n = 4) were compared with those that do not produce such tumors (n = 4) using analytical (quantitative) flow cytometry. Monoclonal antibodies directed to epitopes of intact hCG (hCG-holo) and its subunits, including beta-human chorionic gonadotropin with its carboxy-terminal peptide (hCG beta-CTP), allowed for the determination of hCG beta-CTP/hCG-holo ratios. RESULTS: No significant difference in hCG beta-CTP/hCG-holo ratios was found between the cultured human cancer cells that do not metastasize spontaneously (ratio = 2.39) and those that do (ratio = 2.13), and no difference was seen in their growth rate in nude mice. However, the cells isolated from tumors that do not metastasize spontaneously showed a decrease in their ratios to values less than 1. They reverted to their original values after reestablishment in culture and subsequent passages. In contrast, the ratios shown by cells isolated from tumors that metastasize spontaneously increased to 3 to 6 times their original values in culture, then reverted to their original values after reestablishment in culture and subsequent passages. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, these data demonstrate the following for the first time: 1) There is a direct in vivo correlation between human cancer cells that metastasize spontaneously in nude mice and the expression of membrane-associated complete hCG beta (hCG beta-CTP); and the correlation identifies this molecule as a characteristic metastatic phenotype marker. 2) The marked ratio variations under different conditions indicate that the metastatic phenotype is an unstable event. 3) Growth and local invasion in vivo correlates with the expression of hCG-holo.  相似文献

Cerebral hemodynamic changes in infants with progressive hydrocephalus have been studied with the transcranial Doppler (TCD) technique. Several authors have referred to the correlation between the hemodynamic changes and increased intracranial pressure (ICP). Despite conflicting conclusions on the value of pulsatility index (PI) and resistance index (RI) measurements for monitoring infantile hydrocephalus, these pulsatility indices are the most commonly used for this purpose. Although clinical signs of raised ICP are highly variable and unreliable in infants, assumptions have been made in most of the studies about the presence of elevated ICP on the basis of the patient's clinical state. Few studies have reported on actual ICP values, however, and a direct relationship between ICP and TCD changes has never been adequately demonstrated. In the present study, this relationship was investigated in long-term simultaneous TCD/ICP measurements, in an attempt to develop a noninvasive method of monitoring the effect of ICP on intracranial hemodynamics. Two groups of data sets were established. Group I consisted of pre- and postoperative (shunt implantation) TCD/ICP measurements. Group II were long-term simultaneous TCD/ICP recordings showing significant ICP variations. In most of the postoperative measurements there was a decrease in the average PI and RI values. The correlation between PI or RI and ICP in the long-term simultaneous recordings, however, was generally poor. The risk of obtaining false positive or false negative PI or RI values in short-term measurements was also demonstrated. It can be concluded from our results, besides the wide range of reference values for the Doppler indices and extracranial influences upon them, that the present Doppler indices are inadequate for monitoring the complex intracranial dynamic responses in patients with raised ICP.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess whether high dose estrogen treatment is associated with enhanced arterial reactivity in genetic males. BACKGROUND: Although estrogens have been shown to enhance arterial reactivity in women, and are thereby thought to confer cardiovascular benefit, the vascular effects of long-term estrogen therapy in genetic males is unknown. METHODS: We studied the arterial physiology of 30 genetic males--15 male to female transsexuals receiving long-term high dose estrogen therapy and 15 healthy male control subjects matched for age, smoking history and vessel size. Using external vascular ultrasound, brachial artery diameter was measured at rest, after flow increase (causing endothelium-dependent dilation [EDD]) and after nitroglycerin (GTN), an endothelium-independent dilator. Blood pressure, cholesterol and testosterone levels were also measured in each subject. RESULTS: Total testosterone and free testosterone index levels were lower in the transsexuals compared with the control subjects (p < 0.001). In contrast, EDD was significantly higher in the transsexuals than in the control males (mean [+/-SD] 7.1 +/- 3.1% vs. 3.2 +/- 2.8%, p = 0.001), as was the GTN response (21.2 +/- 6.7% vs. 14.6 +/- 3.3%, p = 0.002). Total and high density lipoprotein cholesterol, blood pressure levels and baseline vessel size were similar in the two groups. On multivariate analysis, enhanced EDD was associated independently with estrogen therapy (p = 0.02) and with low total cholesterol (p = 0.04). An enhanced GTN response was also significantly associated with estrogen therapy (p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: Long-term treatment with high dose estrogens is associated with enhanced arterial reactivity in genetic males, which may be due to the effects of estrogen excess or androgen deprivation, or both.  相似文献

Converging inputs to the entorhinal cortex from the piriform cortex and medial septum: facilitation and current source density analysis. J. Neurophysiol. 78: 2602-2615, 1997. The entorhinal cortex receives sensory inputs from the piriform cortex and modulatory inputs from the medial septum. To examine short-term synaptic facilitation effects in these pathways, current source density (CSD) analysis was used first to localize the entorhinal cortex membrane currents, which generate field potentials evoked by stimulation of these afferents. Field potentials were recorded at 50-micron intervals through the medial entorhinal cortex in urethan-anesthetized rats and the one-dimensional CSD was calculated. Piriform cortex stimulation evoked a surface-negative, deep-positive field potential component in the entorhinal cortex with mean onset and peak latencies of 10.4 and 18.4 ms. The component followed brief 100-Hz stimulation, consistent with a monosynaptic response. CSD analysis linked the component to a current sink, which often began in layer I before peaking in layer II. A later, surface-positive field potential component peaked at latencies near 45 ms and was associated with a current source in layer II. Medial septal stimulation evoked positive and negative field potential components which peaked at latencies near 7 and 16 ms, respectively. A weaker and more prolonged surface-negative, deep-positive component peaked at latencies near 25 ms. The early components were generated by currents in the hippocampal formation, and the late surface-negative component was generated by currents in layers II to IV of the entorhinal cortex. Short-term facilitation effects in conscious animals were examined using electrodes chronically implanted near layer II of the entorhinal cortex. Paired-pulse stimulation of the piriform cortex at interpulse intervals of 30 and 40 ms caused the largest facilitation (248%) of responses evoked by the second pulse. Responses evoked by medial septal stimulation also were facilitated maximally (59%) by a piriform cortex conditioning pulse delivered 30-40 ms earlier. Paired pulse stimulation of the medial septum caused the largest facilitation (149%) at intervals of 70 ms, but piriform cortex evoked responses were facilitated maximally (46%) by a septal conditioning pulse 100-200 ms earlier. Frequency potentiation effects were maximal during 12- to 18-Hz stimulation of either the piriform cortex or medial septum. Occlusion tests suggested that piriform cortex and medial septal efferents activate the same neurons. The CSD analysis results show that evoked field potential methods can be used effectively in chronically prepared animals to examine synaptic responses in the converging inputs from the piriform cortex and medial septum to the entorhinal cortex. The short-term potentiation phenomena observed here suggest that low-frequency activity in these pathways during endogenous oscillatory states may enhance entorhinal cortex responsivity to olfactory inputs.  相似文献
