An improved snare system for the nonsurgical retrieval of intravascular foreign bodies

We have modified a snare technique originally described for transcolonoscopic removal of colonic polyps for the retrieval of intravascular foreign bodies. The key difference from other snare techniques is the employment of a wire snare with a crimp in its midportion that enables the formation of a loop in a plane perpendicular to the axial direction of the guiding catheter. With this technique we have quickly removed a variety of objects from the right heart and pulmonary arteries in four patients.     

Virulence and viability of Yersinia pestis 25 years after lyophilization

When equal volumes of 6% lactose and a broth culture of Yersinia pestis were mixed before freezing, approximately 50% of the cells survived lyophilization and reconstitution on the following day. Concomitantly, the number of viable cells per 50% lethal dose increased from about 16 to 125 organisms. On subsequent storage of the lyophilized cells under vacuum in glass ampoules at 4 degrees C for 25 years, more than 25% of the cells remained viable. When stored cultures were assayed immediately after reconstitution, virulence for mice was significantly reduced (as many as 4,000 cells/50% lethal dose), but the virulence was fully restored when reconstituted cultures were held for 24 h at room temperature, or when a subculture was prepared in fresh medium.     

Demonstration and cytosolic location of an endo-N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase activity towards an asialo-N-acetyl-lactosaminic-type substrate in rat liver

An endo-N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase activity towards an asialo-N-acetyl-lactosaminic-type glycoasparagine substrate was demonstrated in rat liver. This activity was optimal at pH 7.0 and was predominantly present in the soluble (cytosolic) fraction.     

Change in oxygen enhancement ratio with depth in tissue-equivalent material for a collimated beam of fast neutrons

Survival of reproductive capacity of murine leukaemia P-388 cells was assayed in vivo after the cells had been irradiated in vitro under aerobic or hypoxic conditions with collimated beams of X rays or 16 MeV D-Be fast neutrons at various depths in tissue-equivalent phantom material. The response to X-irradiation was the same in the absence of the phantom and at 8-7 cm depth. The response to fast neutrons under aerobic conditions was unchanged from 0 to 23 cm depth within the phantom. However, under hypoxic conditions, the dose-response curve for fast neutrons became significantly steeper with increasing depth in the phantom. The OER decreased from 2-0 in the absence of the phantom to 1-5 at 15 cm deep.
