Inter-generational ties, financial transfers and home-ownership support   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Home-ownership is transmitted between generations. Parental gifts form one of the mechanisms through which the intergenerational transmission of home-ownership takes place. Using the Netherlands Kinship Panel Study, we investigated the influence of parental and children’s resources and other characteristics on financial support from parents to children. A major independent variable was parental home-ownership. As dependent variables, we distinguished between financial support towards buying a home, and financial support in the form of gifts of € 5,000 or more ever received. By making this distinction, we could test whether homeowner parents were particularly likely to help their children become homeowners rather than giving other types of financial help. The results did not indicate such specific gift-giving: parental home-ownership was just as important to other types of monetary support as to home-ownership support. However, the distance to the place where the adult child had grown up was negatively associated with receiving home-ownership support but not with receiving other financial transfers.  相似文献

Urinary urea concentration is an important predictor of NH3 emission from dairy barns. To reduce urinary urea concentration, accurate and precise prediction of urea concentration for different feeding regimes is a prerequisite. The objective of this research, therefore, was to predict urinary urea concentration of a cow using feed characteristics. To compute urinary urea concentration of a cow, we predicted: urine volume; urinary N excretion, using a regression or a mechanistic model; and the relationship between urinary urea concentration and urinary N concentration, which was derived from experimental data. Model results were validated using experimental data. Cows were fed one of nine diets, which was a combination of one of three rumen-degradable protein balances, and one of three roughage compositions. Each diet was repeated once. Measured parameters included herd, diet, and urine characteristics. Observed urinary urea concentration can be predicted with reasonable accuracy from existing models to predict urine volume and urinary N excretion using feed characteristics. The regression model predicted N excretion slightly better than the mechanistic model. In addition, input parameters required for the regression model are recorded at each dairy farm in The Netherlands. This regression model, therefore, can be used by animal nutritionists and producers to determine diets that result in a reduced NH3 emission.  相似文献

Time-resolved EPR oximetry has been used to determine the oxygen release kinetics in spinach thylakoids and PSII membranes. We observe release kinetics with half-times of approximately 0.85 and approximately 1.45 ms for thylakoids and PSII membranes, respectively, which are in close agreement with the EPR determined Yz decay kinetics for the S3 --> --> S0 transition in these systems. The results show conclusively that water-oxygen chemistry is not a rate-limiting step in the donor side of PSII under normal turnover conditions. By analyzing the oxygen release kinetics in thylakoids under nonphysiological, but still functionally competent conditions (low pH or high salt), we observed an initial delay in the O2 release of up to 200 microseconds following flash turnover from the S3 state. This is the first direct indication of a probable quasi-stable intermediate in the S3 --> --> S0 turnover of PSII, possibly representing the putative S4 state. Under conditions more closely approaching physiological, no such delay was resolved, indicating that the S4 --> O2 transition occurs within 50 microseconds under such circumstances. Two possible reaction sequences for O2 formation consistent with these and other data are discussed. It is suggested that the more probable form of "S4" is in fact the S3 + Yz* combination, which must undergo some molecular rearrangement on the tens to hundreds of microseconds time scale before O2 formation chemistry occurs.  相似文献

We present an unusual case of polydactyly of the thumb. The patient, despite having a fully developed nail bed, had a duplication at the metacarpophalangeal level consisting of a single bony phalanx. The Wassel classification of polydactyly, which is the most commonly cited classification scheme, does not include this particular anomaly. Irradiation of the mammalian foetus produces a broad spectrum of congenital abnormalities, growth retardations, developmental delays, and functional deficits, depending upon the dose and the specific gestational phase of irradiation. The developing brain is particularly susceptible to production of deleterious effects, with decreased brain size, behavioural alterations, and mental retardation having been documented. Supplementing the limited human data, rodent models have been extensively used to investigate the specific processes by which relatively low doses, with correspondingly minor cellular damage to the developing neocortex, can produce dramatic postnatal consequences in brain structure and function. The effects of a variety of physical (dose, linear energy transfer, dose rate, fractionation) and biological (species, strain, gestational age, time course post-irradiation) parameters have been examined in an attempt to provide much needed information on such critical aspects as dose response, threshold doses for effect, and extrapolation to human risk estimates. Various acute cellular responses (e.g. appearance of pyknotic cells and macrophages) observed in the developing neocortex 0-24 h after in utero irradiation can be associated with postnatal effects. Moreover, it is possible to correlate thinning of specific layers of the cerebral cortex with specific behavioural aberrations, allowing prediction of brain structural changes from functional alterations, and vice versa. Thus, it is possible to speculate as to the mechanisms and targets for extremely sensitive, radiation-induced cellular damage in the developing foetal brain, that will interfere with the orderly and precisely programmed development of the mammalian brain, leading finally to postnatal expression as delays in growth and development, perturbations in behaviour, and alterations in brain structure.  相似文献
