The effect of mother–child separation on the behavior of children experiencing a diagnostic medical procedure.

54 4–6 and 7–10 yr olds were observed having a venal puncture blood sample drawn in a clinical laboratory with or without their mothers being present. Younger Ss exhibited significantly more crying before and during the blood test, more aggression, and more resistance to the procedure than did older Ss, regardless of experimental condition. The mother-present condition only affected crying before the initiation of the blood test. Ss in both age groups displayed significantly more crying when their mothers were present than when their mother remained in the waiting room. Storage multifunctional oscillographs

Conclusions The storage multifunctional oscillograph is a measuring instrument which provides preliminary processing of the investigated signals. This processing consists of determining the separate parameters of the signal, representing it in the required form, and matching the parameters with the potentialities of the processing devices. The oscillograph is free from design redundancy inherent in sets of instruments which accumulate simple measurement.It is advisable to use a storage tube with a visible image and internal readout of electrical signals, as an oscillograph store. Operations in the multifunctional oscillograph should be based on the development method. It is of interest to develop quantitative methods for evaluating aggregates of simple measurements, optimum application of operations with respect to frequency, as well as the cost and reliability of the device.Translated from Izmeritel'naya Tekhnika, No. 1, pp. 46–48, January, 1968.     

Chloramphenicol antibody causing interference in antibody detection and identification tests

Investigation of the serum of three patients with positive antibody detection tests demonstrated the cause in each to be an antibody against chloramphenicol, a bacteriostatic agent used in commercial red blood cell reagents. Washing of these red cells prior to use prevented agglutination. All three examples of anti-chloramphenicol antibody were IgM and were in low titer when tested at room temperature and 37 C in saline. Two of the antibodies bound complement. The possibility of an antibody to an ingredient of the commercial preservative solution should be considered if problems are encountered in tests with unwashed commercial red blood cell reagents.
