In our previous papers we have demonstrated that biofilm structure never reaches a steady state in biofilm reactors; in this paper we link this fact to biofilm detachment and to the oscillating pattern of biofilm accumulation. In one respect reactors supporting suspended microbial growth and reactors supporting attached microbial growth (biofilms) are similar: in both the biomass accumulates in the reactor and is disposed of with the effluent. However, while in reactors with suspended microbial growth biomass accumulation and disposal occur simultaneously, in biofilm reactors these two processes are separated in time. Biomass accumulation in biofilm reactors shows a distinct pattern composed of three phases: (1) growth, (2) detachment, (3) regrowth. Despite this distinct pattern of biofilm accumulation observed at the microscale, biofilm reactors do reach a steady state of substrate removal.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe the occurrence of endometriosis in monozygotic twins. DESIGN: Postal questionnaire plus confirmation of disease status. SETTING: Twins were recruited via the American Endometriosis Association and the National Endometriosis Society of Great Britain and via British gynecologists. RESULT(S): Fourteen twin pairs were concordant for endometriosis, and two were discordant. Nine pairs of twins had moderate-severe endometriosis. CONCLUSION(S): These findings contribute to the growing body of literature that suggests endometriosis has a genetic basis.  相似文献

The discovery of the superantigens (SAgs) offered new insights on the interaction between microorganisms and the host immune system. Associated to Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class II molecules, SAgs bind to the variable domain of the beta chain (V beta) of the TCR alpha beta engaged in the family specificity of lymphocytes. Therefore, these molecules are able to activate a high number of T lymphocytes as well as surface MHC class II bearing cells, leading to an overriding release of cytokines and inflammatory mediators, which have been related to their toxic effects. Endogenous SAgs are encoded by murine tumor proviruses (Mtv) which are integrated in the genome of mice. Bacteria and viruses produce exogenous SAgs and those related to food poisoning have been widely studied. The presence of parasite SAgs is still unclear and further studies are required to establish their existence and effects on the corresponding infections.  相似文献

A method for distributing capacitor and resistor area to optimally reduce die area in a given continuous-time filter design while maintaining the filter's designed signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), frequency response, and topology is discussed. To do this, a basic linear programming algorithm is developed from derived circuit cost and constraint functions. Among the three major filter types of fifth-order under comparison, maximum combined capacitor and resistor die area savings of 21% results for the Butterworth filter. An alternative approach where the SNR is optimized for a given die area is also presented. Maximum improvement of the fifth-order Butterworth filter for this approach is 1.2 dB.  相似文献

A new technique using the Thompson self-retaining retractor system (Thompson Surgical Instruments, Inc, Traverse City, MI) to harvest lesser saphenous veins is presented. Site-specific regeneration of the liver after 70% partial hepatectomy was investigated noninvasively in terms of protein synthesis using PET with L-[methyl-11C]methionine in a living animal. Protein synthesis in rat liver at 24 hr after partial hepatectomy did not occur uniformly in the whole liver but intensely in the middle part of the regenerating organ in comparison with the other parts. The activity was significantly low at the posterior aspect of the liver. On the other hand, site-specific protein synthesis was not observed in normal liver. These results were confirmed by bioimaging analyzer system (BAS) analysis, an invasive method that indicates radioactivities of precise intrahepatic sites. DNA synthesis in regenerating liver was also monitored with [2-14C]thymidine and analyzed by BAS 24 hr after 70% hepatectomy. Site-specific DNA synthesis in regenerating liver corresponding to the protein synthesis was also observed by BAS analysis. These results indicate that liver regeneration occurs intensely in the middle part of the liver and that PET enables noninvasive in vivo biochemical analysis.  相似文献

Variable magnetic-field Hall and transient photoconductance-lifetime measurements were performed on a series of undoped, In-doped, and As-doped HgCdTe samples grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Use of quantitative mobility-spectrum analysis (QMSA) combined with multiple carrier-fitting (MCF) techniques indicates that the majority of samples contain an interfacial n-type layer that significantly influences the interpretation of the electrical measurements. This n-type layer completely masks the high-quality electrical properties of undoped or low n-type In-doped HgCdTe, as well as complicating the interpretation of activation in As-doped p-type HgCdTe. Introduction of an intentional n-type background, typically created through doping with In to “recover” high mobility, is actually shown to increase the “bulk” layer conductivity to a level comparable to the interface layer conductivity. Photoconductance-lifetime measurements suggest that In-doping may introduce Shockley-Read-Hall (SRH) recombination centers. Variable-field Hall analysis is shown to be essential for characterizing p-type material. Photoconductance-lifetime measurements suggest that trapping states may be introduced during the incorporation and activation of As. Two distinctly different types of temperature dependencies were observed for the lifetimes of As-doped samples.  相似文献

α,β‐Unsaturated nitriles have been synthesized by Knoevenagel condensation of a carbonylic compound with malononitrile, assisted by sonochemical irradiation. Two alkaline‐promoted clays (Li+‐ and Cs+‐exchanged saponites) have been employed as catalysts. The influence of the carbonylic compound (benzaldehyde or cyclohexanone) and the use of a solvent on the catalytic activity have been studied. Remarkable increase in the conversion values has been found when the reaction is activated by ultrasound, as compared with the thermal activation. In this green, solvent‐free procedure, α,β‐unsaturated nitriles have been produced in very high yields (97%) when the Cs+‐saponite is used as catalyst.
