The effects of intra-arterial infusion of E. coli endotoxin at 1.0 mg. per minute on the gastric total and mucosal blood flows, electrical potential difference, and ionic fluxes across the gastric mucosa were studied in an exteriorized, chambered preparation of canine fundic stomach. Gamma-labelled microsphere technique was used in addition to venous drainage and plasma aminopyrine clearance for the measurement of total and mucosal blood flow, respectively. In spite of normal systemic blood pressure throughout the experiment, E. coli endotoxin infusion caused a significant decrease in total gastric blood flow and in the fractional distribution of flow to the mucosae. There was no significant arteriovenous shunting of microspheres. Significant reduction in potential difference and hydrogen-ion back diffusion also was noted after endotoxin infusion, possibly as a consequence of reduced mucosal blood flow. The results indicate that significant gastric mucosal ischemia can occur and may represent a mechanism in the development of gastric erosions in endotoxemia, even in the absence of systemic hypotension.  相似文献

The effect of the presentation rate and exposure duration of visually presented words on brain activity was investigated using positron emission tomography. Subjects either read aloud or silently mouthed the names of words. In regions associated with early visual analysis, activity increased with both rate and duration; in regions associated with response generation, activity increased with increasing rate but was unaffected by duration; and in regions associated with word recognition, activity decreased with increasing duration. The variable responses of different brain regions illustrate the functional segregation of these regions. Of particular interest was the dissociation between activity in the posterior fusiform gyri and that in the medial lingual gyrus--in the former, activity increased with rate and duration but the latter was unaffected by either variable. This finding suggests that word processing in the lingual gyrus during reading is distinct from that in the posterior fusiform gyri. A further observation was that during reading aloud, when subjects can hear the sound of their own voice, the response in the primary auditory cortices increased with stimulus rate, demonstrating that subjects process the sound of their own voice in a qualitatively similar way to words spoken by another.  相似文献

Universal lossless compression via multilevel pattern matching   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A universal lossless data compression code called the multilevel pattern matching code (MPM code) is introduced. In processing a finite-alphabet data string of length n, the MPM code operates at O(log log n) levels sequentially. At each level, the MPM code detects matching patterns in the input data string (substrings of the data appearing in two or more nonoverlapping positions). The matching patterns detected at each level are of a fixed length which decreases by a constant factor from level to level, until this fixed length becomes one at the final level. The MPM code represents information about the matching patterns at each level as a string of tokens, with each token string encoded by an arithmetic encoder. From the concatenated encoded token strings, the decoder can reconstruct the data string via several rounds of parallel substitutions. A O(1/log n) maximal redundancy/sample upper bound is established for the MPM code with respect to any class of finite state sources of uniformly bounded complexity. We also show that the MPM code is of linear complexity in terms of time and space requirements. The results of some MPM code compression experiments are reported  相似文献

We investigate a type of lossless source code called a grammar-based code, which, in response to any input data string x over a fixed finite alphabet, selects a context-free grammar Gx representing x in the sense that x is the unique string belonging to the language generated by Gx. Lossless compression of x takes place indirectly via compression of the production rules of the grammar Gx. It is shown that, subject to some mild restrictions, a grammar-based code is a universal code with respect to the family of finite-state information sources over the finite alphabet. Redundancy bounds for grammar-based codes are established. Reduction rules for designing grammar-based codes are presented  相似文献

We report on the performance of a recently introduced commercial chessboard method using 12 antisera, in comparison with that of the 55-antiserum panel used in determining the serogroups and types (SGTs) of Streptococcus pneumoniae, both of which were carried out by a coagglutination technique. Of a total of 150 strains of S. pneumoniae studied, 135 (90%) belonged to the SGTs represented in the 23-valent pneumococcal vaccine; of these, 130 (96.3%) were identified as the same SGTs by both typing methods. The remaining five strains showed cross-reactivity with more than two pools by the chessboard method, but could be assigned to a single SGT by the Quellung test. The 96.3% concordance of the chessboard method suggests it can be adopted for determination of the SGTs of S. pneumoniae in laboratories.  相似文献
