SQUID NMR Studies of the Second Layer of 3He at High Density

Nuclear magnetism in the second layer of ³He films on graphite has been studied as a function of density in the zero-field limit at temperatures down to 300 µK. Total surface coverages in this study ranged from 20 atoms/nm² (the lowest coverage at which the effective exchange parameter turns ferromagnetic) through the two-phase region (ending at about 24 atoms/nm²) and into the single-phase imcommensurate solid region up to 31.2 atoms/nm². The surface layers were studied using both pulsed and cw NMR measured with our SQUID NMR system in magnetic fields of 500 µT and lower. As the surface density continues to increase in the single-phase region, the exchange constant decreases consistently with a picture of steric hindrance impeding ferromagnetic exchange. Several different observational features scale with this inferred exchange: low-field magnetization, NMR frequency shift, and the temperature of onset of significant magnetization.     

Development of polyurethane elastomer composite materials by addition of milled fiberglass with coupling agent

Polyurethane elastomer composites were developed using milled fiberglass and their mechanical properties were studied. In particular, the organically chemical treatment of the milled fiberglass was investigated in detail. It was demonstrated that both strength and toughness of the resulting elastomer composites were improved considerably with the addition content of fiberglass. Furthermore, it was indicated that the optimal properties can be achieved by the proper addition of milled fiberglass that was chemically treated using coupling agent.     

Internet Multicast Video Delivery

Internet video delivery has been motivating research in multicast routing, quality of service (QoS), and the service model of the Internet itself for the last 15 years. Multicast delivery has the potential to deliver a large amount of content that currently cannot be delivered through broadcast. IP and overlay multicast are two architectures proposed to provide multicast support. A large body of research has been done with IP multicast and QoS mechanisms for IP multicast since the late 1980s. In the past five years, overlay multicast research has gained momentum with a vision to accomplish ubiquitous multicast delivery that is efficient and scales in the dimensions of the number of groups, number of receivers, and number of senders. This work presents an overview of the issues facing both IP and overlay multicast and the approaches that researchers are taking to solve them. Many of these approaches take advantage of a rich interface, beyond a single rate video stream, between the coding and delivery mechanisms. The semantics of this interface is an important question for future research and we discuss this with insight from experience on delivery technologies.

Preparation of BaMgAl10O17∶Eu2+ and Its Phase Behavior in Microemulsion System

BaMgAl10O17∶Eu2 (BAM) was prepared in the microemulsion system and its phase behavior was studied. There exists a small region in the reverse microemulsion system where the dispersed particles are of spherical form. In this way, BAM blue phosphor with good dispersion can be synthesized. The microemulsion phase diagrams of the pseudo-ternary system (Triton X-100/cosurfactant-oil-BAM brine) were first established intuitively by the dilution method. The microstructure of microemulsions was determined through eyeballing, conductance technique, and polar optical microscopy. Its phase behavior is affected by various factors, such as temperature (room temperature, 30, 40 ℃), oil, surfactants, and cosurfactants in microemulsions. According to the phase diagrams, the microemulsion system of Triton X-100/1-hexanol-hexane-BAM brine was chosen to prepare the precursor. The BAM phosphor can be obtained via sintering the precursor at a comparatively low temperature. The phosphors were characterized by XRD and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectra.
