Complaints from the Domingos Martins population about sewage odours in the city made the district attorney order an impact assessment of the odours emitted by the city wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). This study comprised various techniques, models and population surveys. In 2007, an odour emission model proved that the main hydrogen sulphide emitter was the aeration tank of the WWTP (13.5 g h(-1)) and such emissions, according to CALPUFF model, should be perceived in the whole Domingos Martins city centre area. In this area, 58% of those interviewed were annoyed by the WWTP odours. However, in 2009, the odour monitoring panel recorded few odour occurrences. A second population survey showed that hereafter only 20% of those interviewed were annoyed by the WWTP emissions. Odour emission and dispersion models run with 2010 data proved a drastic reduction of the WWTP aeration tank emissions and consequently the city centre was not bothered by WWTP emissions anymore. The odour emission reduction was due to the modification of the WWTP aeration tank system. Despite the odour emission reduction, houses located southeast of the WWTP were still annoyed by sewage odours. However, in this part of the town, other sources of sewage odours have been found.  相似文献

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are promising alternatives for the estimation of suspended sediment concentration (SSC), but they are dependent on the availability data. This study investigates the use of an ANN model for forecasting SSC using turbidity and water level. It is used an original method, idealized to investigate the minimum complexity of the ANN that does not present, in relation to more complex networks, loss of efficiency when applied to other samples, and to perform its training avoiding the overfitting even when data availability is insufficient to use the cross-validation technique. The use of a validation procedure by resampling, the control of overfitting through a previously researched condition of training completion, as well as training repetitions to provide robustness are important aspects of the method. Turbidity and water level data, related to 59 SSC values, collected between June 2013 and October 2015, were used. The development of the proposed ANN was preceded by the training of an ANN, without the use of the new resources, which clearly showed the overfitting occurrence when resources were not used to avoid it, with Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NS) equals to 0.995 in the training and NS = 0.788 in the verification. The proposed method generated efficient models (NS = 0.953 for verification), with well distributed errors and with great capacity of generalization for future applications. The final obtained model enabled the SSC calculation, from water level and turbidity data, even when few samples were available for the training and verification procedures.  相似文献

Biodiesel fuels were prepared from different vegetable oil sources (canola, soybean, sunflower, and corn) and studied through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The dielectric constant from these biofuels evidenced no important dependence on feedstock, suggesting basically no change in fuels' polarity from varying the raw materials. In a different way, huge variations of the electrical resistivity and relaxation frequency were found when comparing among the studied biodiesels. Our findings demonstrate that these variations are closely associated with changes in the biodiesel viscosity, which is known to modulate charge mobility and was feedstock dependent. Accordingly, the impedance spectroscopy is here revealed to be a sensitive, alternative and reliable analytical approach for distinguishing among different feedstock-related biodiesels and monitoring certain biofuels' properties, like viscosity and interrelated parameters, usually connected with fatty acid structural profiles in biodiesel fuels.  相似文献

Bifidobacterium Bb-12 was microencapsulated by spray drying with whey. This present work investigated the survival of these microcapsules under simulated gastrointestinal conditions, as well as their tolerance to NaCl and their viability during storage. The results showed a small decrease in the viability of microencapsulated Bifidobacterium at low pH. In relation to the exposure of Bifidobacterium to bile, microencapsulation with whey did not protect the probiotic cells; however, the viability of the microcapsules remained >6 log cfu/g, even after 24 h of incubation at the highest bile concentration analyzed. No growth was noted with either the free cells or the microencapsulated cells on MRS-LP with NaCl. The viability of the microcapsules stored at 4 °C remained high and constant for 12 weeks. When the microcapsules were added to a dairy dessert, the probiotic count remained above 7 log cfu/g for 6 weeks. Therefore, whey is a promising encapsulating agent for Bifidobacterium Bb-12.  相似文献

Brewer’s spent grain (BSG) was evaluated for its potential as a functional baking ingredient. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the microstructure of BSG and wheat flours. Baked snacks (breadsticks) were prepared using 15%, 25% and 35% BSG and evaluated for their baking quality and fibre and protein content (over a period of 3 months). The addition of BSG altered the baking characteristics of the breadsticks by affecting their structure and texture. The snacks appeared to lack in cellular structure and crispiness. However, they had quite a stable shelf‐life, as changes in texture, moisture and aw progressed at a low rate. Addition of 25% and 35% BSG significantly increased the protein content of the snacks, and addition of 15% BSG more than doubled the content of dietary fibre in the samples.  相似文献

The impact of supplemental energy on nutrient utilization, fiber digestion, rumen fermentation, and lactation performance was evaluated in dairy cows grazing pastures composed of brome, orchardgrass, red clover, and alfalfa. Three amounts [0, 5, and 10 kg dry matter (DM)/d] of ground dry shelled corn-based concentrate were supplemented to nine rumen cannulated Holstein cows in a 3 x 3 Latin square replicated three times. Cows were on average 84+/-13 d in milk and producing 41.6+/-5.9 kg of milk/d at the beginning of the study. An increase in amounts of concentrate in the diets was associated with an increase in milk production, solids-corrected milk, and concentrations of milk protein and SNF. Milk fat percentage and milk urea nitrogen concentration decreased linearly with supplementation. Milk production and protein percentage were 21.8, 26.8, and 30.4 kg/d, and 2.85, 2.95, and 3.05% for the increasing levels of concentrate, respectively. Intake and digestibility of DM and organic matter (OM) increased as grain supplementation increased. Ruminal pH and total volatile fatty acid concentration (VFA) were not affected by supplementation or the amount of concentrate. Ruminal ammonia concentration was reduced by supplementation, presumably due to a decrease in N intake and greater use of ammonia-N for rumen microbial protein synthesis. Rumen fermentation varied throughout the day, with lower mean pH and higher VFA concentrations at night. Supplementation increased total OM intake, decreased forage OM intake, and increased the proportion of OM that was digested in the intestines. Total DM intake by grazing dairy cows can be increased using ground dry shelled corn-based concentrate without causing negative effects on forage digestion.  相似文献

It has been shown that blends of starch with a poly(ethylene-vinyl-alcohol) copolymer, EVOH, designated as SEVA-C, present an interesting combination of mechanical, degradation and biocompatible properties, specially when filled with hydroxyapatite (HA). Consequently, they may find a range of applications in the biomaterials field. This work evaluated the influence of HA fillers and of blowing agents (used to produce porous architectures) over the viscoelastic properties of SEVA-C polymers, as seen by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), in order to speculate on their performances when withstanding cyclic loading in the body. The composite materials presented a promising performance under dynamic mechanical solicitation conditions. Two relaxations were found being attributed to the starch and EVOH phases. The EVOH relaxation process may be very useful in vivo improving the implants performance under cyclic loading. DMA results also showed that it is possible to produce SEVA-C compact surface/porous core architectures with a mechanical performance similar to that of SEVA-C dense materials. This may allow for the use of these materials as bone replacements or scaffolds that must withstand loads when implanted.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the swelling of emulsion liquid membranes using dithio-DEHPA as carrier. The application of interest was the removal of zinc from a synthetic aqueous solution which simulates a zinc plant effluent. The effect of several variables such as the concentration of carrier in the membrane, stirring speed and permeation time on the swelling of the emulsion is reported. Experimental results show that occlusion depends mainly on the amount of carrier in the membrane and can be significant when the concentration of carrier is lower than 6.0%. The interfacial tension analysis confirms that the size of globules is influenced by the concentration of carrier in the membrane. Stirring speed and permeation time are related to the water transport and must be kept at low values.  相似文献

The inflammatory response resulting from the implantation of a medical device may compromise its performance and efficiency leading, in certain cases, to the failure of the implant. Thus, the assessment of the behavior of inflammatory cells in vitro, constitutes a key feature in the evaluation of the adverse potential, or not, of new promising biomaterials. The objectives of this study were to determine whether starch-based polymers and composites activated human neutrophils. Blends of starch with ethylene-vinyl alcohol, with cellulose acetate and polycaprolactone, as well as composites based on all these materials filled with hydroxyapatite have been studied. A lysozyme assay was adapted to examine enzyme secretion from human neutrophils incubated with different starch-based materials. Changes in the free radical and degranulation activity of the neutrophil were also determined by measuring the luminescent response of Pholasin®, a photoprotein that emits light after excitation by reactive oxygen species. The amount of lysozyme secreted by neutrophils incubated with the polymers did not exhibit significant differences between the tested materials. Results were in all cases similar to those obtained for the control (polypropylene) except for one of the starch blends (corn starch with polycaprolactone reinforced with 30% (w/w) of HA). The chemiluminescence experiments showed that polymers reduce the signal produced by activated neutrophils. Furthermore, for some polymers it was demonstrated that the phenomenon was due to an effect of the surface of the materials in cell adhesion or a simultaneous competition for the photoprotein in solution, which results in the decrease of the intensity of light emitted and detected.  相似文献
